Wow! That is such a BEAUTIFUL PLACE! Thank you for sharing this! I would hope to someday come and visit! God bless you all. I know heaven is going to be so much better, but this must be as close to heaven on earth as can be. Of course, heaven is truly in our hearts no matter where we are as Jesus is in our hearts! But, just beautiful!
I lived there for 4 years as a Redemptorist student from 1980 to 1984. Truly a bit of heaven on earth. The half sunken barges were the vessels that brought the granite up the Hudson to build the place in the early 1900s.
Ohh Laura! What a pleasure to get just one glimpse of the Catskills mountains again!!! I lived in Catskill Bruderhoff for 6 weeks and got to climb up there with their high school group.... it was awesome and I’ve never forgotten it... ! later learned of their incredible 🇺🇸 USA history ...the moonshiners, growing cannabis, flood with the Hoover dame, coal miners, railroads, birth of unions and car racing. Thanks a bunch!
Every single video is literally a shot of joy to my soul. 💞 there is no emoji good enough to show how much I love Bruderhof and your way of life and beliefs. These videos are a my happy place!
I studied with those Redemptorist priests and Mt. St. Alphonsus was their theology school. I was in their high school and college and would visit Esopus quite a lot during the 1970s - especially the late 70s. Many fond memories. They had a wonderful library and the place was huge and the property immense. By the late 70s the river had cleaned up pretty well and one could go swimming in the Hudson during the summer - in the early 70s it was a little dicey but by 77 or 78 it was fine for swimming.
Laura thank you so much for sharing your life and faith with us. Honestly speaking, I'm a former Catholic and on a personal level I've grown apart from Christianity and church in general ( I have my reasons) I really do respect you and your family, you have such a great and genuine presence. Even though I think I could have some differences in opinion with the Bruderhof in some ways, I do very much you respect as a community. Do you accept former Christians to visit? I would honestly love to visit!
thank you for sharing. The wood & stone work is impressive. Kind of reminds me of Helen & Scott Nearing's book 'Living the Good Life'. You use local material.
Hello! I have a question about your religious practices. Do your Christian leaders study the Bible? I come from a traditional Christian church body & their pastors study the Bible several years before leading a congregation. Thank you in advance for your time.
you would have to agree to their statement of faith in order to become a member -- if it matches, then you may consider joining... but if you don't agree with it ..then no you would not be able to join, but you can visit!
Some Christians live a continual mountain top life (you seem to be one such person). That day when evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, "Let us go over to the other side." Some Christians don't want to go and see the life down in the plain where people are afflicted and need help. The disciples were so amazed that they wanted to stay up there on the mountain. But no, Jesus led them back down to meet the disciples at the town at the foot of the mountain. When they got there, a big crowd had gathered around the other disciples. In the center of the crowd there was a man with his demon-possessed son. He had asked the disciples to cast the demon out of his son, the man explained to Jesus, but they were not able to do so. So Jesus rebuked the demon, and immediately the boy was delivered.
College students who live on the Bruderhof are supported financially by the community and through scholarships. Most of them take a job as well to help with expenses.
Take in the beauty of all of God's creation. All things were created by Christ Jesus, God the Son, for Him; Colossians chapter 1. Jesus Christ, the thrill of hope, for a sick, hurting, and weary world-Romans 10:9-10 from the Bible: “That if you confess with your mouth the LORD Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart man believes to righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made to salvation.”
men don't dress 'modern' -- just pants and shirts haven't changed much -- women choose to wear skirts -- they aren't 'modern' because they choose to dress modestly -- and if you noticed, most 'modern' clothes for women (especially those in the younger ages) are not very modest.

"it's amazing what a big body of water can do to the soul" - that's accurate. Just looking at the water can give you so much peace inside.

What is a redemtorist? Is that a Catholic order?
I'm glad you have such a lovely setting.

Is it possible to be Eastern Orthodox and still belong to a Bruderhof community?
you would have to agree to their statement of faith in order to become a member -- if it matches, then you may consider joining... but if you don't agree with it ..then no you would not be able to join, but you can visit!
how do the finances work; how does your democracy work; is there space for an individual family life;

How do you all pay your bills if no one in the community earns money?
they personally don't have money but the community owns several businesses.
How does your community pay for college
College students who live on the Bruderhof are supported financially by the community and through scholarships. Most of them take a job as well to help with expenses.

Why do men dress modern but women dont? Even if you wear skirts they could be more modern.
Also, I'm not trying to be critical. I just wonder because I live near some Amish communities and both men and women dress more traditionally.
