I've never lived in sweden, but my mom did and we celebrate over here in the us our own way. I'm 17, and I'm moving out by next year- But I'm gonna keep celebrating with my partner in our new place! I just.. Have to learn the song first ''
We used to sing this in swedish in elementary school (in Germany) and I remember every single word 11 years later. It was super hard to learn it back in the days but it's so beautiful.
Haven’t heard this song in almost 20 years. It holds so many happy memories of my childhood in Sweden. The story of the girl in Italy is pretty grotesque & was not the story told to me as a child, but nevertheless, I love this song & the tradition behind it!
Well, there are assholes here who wants to see these old traditions disappear, in favor of.. well, I guess muslim ones. So 10 years from now you might have to go to Italy to see it..
I used to do a Sankta Lucia festival every year at my childhood church! English is my only language, but I knew this song by heart! I'm trying to learn it again 😊
Sankta Lucia är bäst sjung på svenska och jag saknar jul godis till exempel glögg, peppar kakor och marsipan. Hej från del staten oregon mina svenska släktingar
Lucia is 13:th of December and celebrating that lucia stood up for her right to be a Christian, that she died for by the roman emporor diocletianus persecution of Christians.
This song originated from a traditional neapolitan song (Santa Lucia is a district of Naples from which boats used to leave to foreign countries in the XIX and XX centuries).
For some reason in my part of the province (Brescia, northern Italy), there is a strong tradition about Saint Lucy. She is the one bringing gifts to children (Instead of Father Christmas, Saint Nicholas or variations of the character). Traditionally, she comes with a donkey, in a white veil. Children should be asleep when she comes, or she might blind them! But don't forget to leave cookies and milk outside the door for the donkey xD I always found fascinating how somehow we share a tradition with Scandinavia, I wonder how it got to my hometown, it is not particularly present in the rest of Italy.
Much of these celebrations have their roots in pagan times. Before Lucia it was called 'Stora Lusse'. Probably from 'Stora ljuse', Old norse 'Gróta liós' "Great light". From beginning a lightwake on the longest night. But since Västergötland, where tradition is strongest, had much contact with Kyiv-Rus in the 11th to 13th c, it is very likely that they borrowed a lot from Kolada-celebrations in medieval Ukraine and Russia...
I never really liked my name, Lucia, then i kinda liked it because of this song, but now that i've read the story about some girl that stabbed her eyes... i don't know... haha
Saint Lucia is a saint after all, a girl so devoted to her faith that she put herself through misery willingly and then paid the ultimate prize for her decision, so I think you should like your name
Saint lucia was a roman Greek woman who become Christian during emporor diocletianus and it was illegal to be a Christian, one winter day lucia got boiling oil over her and she also got stabbed for being a Christian. Really sad.

As part of the school choir, I need to sing this for a carol service. I'm really nervous, but this song is really nice!
I really miss living in Sweden and being a part of this tradition, so I made a Lucia video to showcase the beauty of this. ❤️

Ciao da Napoli. Nostra Santa Lucia ❤❤
Den ursprungliga Saint Lucia-låten är napolitansk. Neapel älskar och hälsar Sverige. Sverige älskar Neapel, hem för Saint Lucia-låten.
Quanto amiamo noi di Napoli Santa Lucia❤❤❤
My childhood here in South America (norwegian sailor father) more than 30 ys not listening this song. So many memories.
We celebrate this here in Finland too. Swedish-speaking minority choose every year the Lucia Maiden. sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finlands_Lucia

You should look at where the Lombards came from ;)

I wonder if, in her martyrdom, Sankta Lucia found eternal rest in Santa Lucia, and spends her time singing the Italian counterpart of this song?

Visst hördu. Tusen år av kristendom har ju inte satt några spår alls😂

I love this song, but do you think sixth grade should be singing this song for choir?
I don't see why not. At the school I work at the th graders sing it on Lucia, and in the audience are kids as young as 6.
DOES ANYONE HAVE THE SHEET MUSIC TO THIS?
