    This is a reupload that's about five minutes longer than the original video; this includes longer, repeating music samples to better hear differences between the different pressings and more of my opinion. Thank you all who voted for this version, I hope the differences are more clear for you
    One final note, I made minor volume adjustments between the different samples. I found the volume levels were overpowering any differences you might hear. In general the US pressing was lowered about -3db, the MoFi pressing was raised about 3db and the 2019 mix was raised about 2db. It did vary between songs and sometimes I had to lower the UK pressing a couple of db.

      Do you feel the 2009 version of old brown shoe sounds really bad. The vocals are too quiet and its hard to hear what george is singing in most parts? I really wish they remixed this song cause I feel its georges best song.

      You should have presented them in a random order, unlabeled to prevent confirmation bias in the viewer. By default the mass opinion is going to be weighted toward the 1969 and 2019 mixes. By presenting them in the order as you did, it probably only confirmed that bias.

  • @GeauxWyatt
    @GeauxWyatt 5 ปีที่แล้ว +134

    The 2019 mix emphasized the right things. It’s easily the best if you’re a fan of Ringo’s drums, it puts more punch in the toms (I’ve always loved how ringo uses his toms) it fills the mix. It’s also a great mix to hear Paul’s bass lines more prevalent in the mix (obviously this was probably a way to make the mix sound more contemporary)

    • @frazerspooner7683
      @frazerspooner7683 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Also taking into account that bass-forward mixes weren't common at the time because most turntables couldn't handle or reproduce such a sound. I think Giles really took into account that it is a sacrosanct record, but also offered a mix that allowed drums and bass to be more forefront for the first time without needles jumping. He knows that if people are serious about the album they'll know to seek out a UK 69 pressing, he did a great job.

    I think that 2019 is just a proper modern stereo mix, the best they could squeeze out of the original tapes. They really had a different approach to stereo mixes back in the day. The 2019 mix is pretty great. Honestly it's either the OG 1969 version for the old school vibes or the 2019 version for a more modern experience for me.

      The 1986 CD remasters are sourced from the 2nd generation analog master tapes. The 2009 CD remasters are sourced from the 1986 digital remasters and you can still hear 16 bit reverb from digital 80's plugins. Abbey Road told Giles Martin who helped on mixing they had to use his father's digital remasters because they thought George Martin would be offended. When they asked George, George said he didn't even care. So they admitted they screwed up the 2009 remasters. The 2019 remix is the first time since 1986 we have gone back to the analog tapes only this time they were 1st generation instead of 2nd.

Granted, the MOFI definitely has more "smile" EQ on it than the othrrs, but it is by far the puchiest/bassiest version out there, even more so than the 2019 version. Here's my opinions on each one because my opinion totally matters.
    1. US Pressing - sounds way too muffled and low. Doesn't pack a punch.
    2. Mobile Fidelity - it's fine, almost sounds like the UK pressing, but the highs are far too sharp for my taste.
    3. UK Pressing - it's perfect of course.
    4. The 2012 Canadian Pressing - it's good, but it depends on how you hear it and if it suits you, or if you let the fact it's just the digital 2009 stereo remaster put on vinyl bother you too much.
    5. 2019 Remix - it's absolutely incredible and I give the utmost highest praise to Giles Martin, but just like how I feel about the 2018 mix of The White Album, it won't really replace the original stereo mixes unlike the 2017 Sgt. Pepper mix.
    But really, it all comes down to how you the listener really feels about it. Get what suits you best.

      I have a lot of qualms with I want you she’s so heavy as well. Wicked Organ was turned down, the last harmony was turned down (I think because of Paul belting it out), the moog wind noises being quieted down, and how it doesn’t end as abruptly as the original. In the original the end cuts off instantly while in the 2019 mix it sounds like somebody turning it off with a knob. You can hear it quiet down a bit before it cuts off. Other than that the modern loud production works so well with the intensity of the song none of the things I said really even matter that much

    WOW! I was glad you took the time to compile this and used vinyl to do it. I agree on the some of the tracks the 2019 remix stands out. Here comes the sun is probably the most noticeable in my estimation. It has clarity and focus and adds much "ear candy" without detracting from the original performance. The bass is tighter and more pronounced. Drums are crisper. Guitars are cleaner and my favorite is the harmony vocals. Instead of them being grouped together on one channel maybe with some verb or delay, they wind up separated between the left and right channels and are so pleasing to hear. Kudos to Giles and Sam for this expertise and Kudos for you showing the differences.

  • @KevinStriker
    @KevinStriker 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I haven't heard Giles' Let It Be, but of the three that I have heard, Abbey Road is the one I like the most. I felt the bass was too boomy across the board on Sgt. Pepper, and the White Album didn't do a handful of tracks justice like "Helter Skelter" and "Savoy Truffle". However, the Abbey Road remix sweetens it in all the right ways, I love hearing the texture of the drums and bass guitar.
    It won't replace the original mix, but as an alternative experience this one does what I think the best remixes do: It made me feel like I heard the album for the first time again.

    The only downpoint of Giles's mixes is that he seems to be so in love with McCartney's bass that the unintended consequence of its higher fidelity is that the bass tends to separate itself from the rest and doesnt blend as well. Otherwise a grand job although i prefer the original and the 1980. The latter maybe a tad too aggressive. But you are right in saying that the stereo image of the 2019 pressing is superior. It is not my favourite Beatles album though. Im waiting for Rubber Soul which is, hoping the stereo image will be better than the original heavy pan..

    2019 remaster is the better remaster than the others but it also sucks too, Ringo has too much treble, John and George's guitars are barely audible, the Bass is in stereo. At least it makes the vocals so much clearer and better to listen to.

    Over the years I have owned a US second pressing, US 70s pressing (I forget exactly which), MoFi, US 80s pressing and the 2019 remix. For me, the MoFi and 2019 remix are head and shoulders above the others. I liked how this video compared the segments in each song. I know it was done that way to avoid a copyright hit but it was actually quite effective and made it easy to compare the different pressings.

    Definitely the better version of the video. The volume adjustment has definitely made it much easier to distinguish between the different records. But also... I would've really apreciated if they gave the option of just purchasing the 2019 mix album on its own for 15-25 bucks on its own along side the 3 LP 65 dollar version. So if, like me, you just want to get the best sounding version of this album on its own for a lower price. About your views on "Her Majesty", I can clearly here Paul's voice much better in the 2019 mix. In all the earlier versions, its muddied by the instruments, and, or track hiss. The 2019 version is the best of the bunch. I have been listning to The Beatles since they were on The Ed Sullivan Show in February 1964, when I was thirteen years old. I grew up buying all their albums, (in mono, as I didn't own a stereo until I was eighteen, as MOST albums at that time were in mono). Yes, from the short clips that I heard, the 2019 is superior in quality. Thanks for sharing.

    12:25 "When Ringo (or maybe it's Paul, I don't know) are playing the drums...". While the album has of course many studio overdubs, it's been amply documented that, after the disastrous sessions that later resulted in the "Let It Be" album, the band made a conscious effort to record a studio album "like a band" instead of separate efforts with plenty of studio trickery, as they did on "Sgt. Pepper" and the White Album. Unlike the "Pepper" sessions, in which the most productive thing for Ringo was learning how to play chess, he played a 100% active role in the recording of "Abbey Road". The only percussion parts recorded by McCartney in this album are some handclaps on "Here Comes The Sun" and wind chimes on "You Never Give Me Your Money".
    Great video. Thank you for your effort!

    I was happy when I bought the Abbey Rd., SuperDeluxe noches on CD but on vinyl and one of the things I found interesting is that the Canadian pricing from the 2012 box out of the Beatles albums it sounded really good but there’s something wonderful about Giles Martin‘s remix which I think blows out everything out of the water apart from the 2012 remastered version of Abbey Road. and I love the fact that on the song come together Ringoes drum patterns are moved from the left to the right in the 2019 vinyl remix as opposed to the original mix or even a 2012 mix. everything is so clear in the 2019 remix I think it’s just fantastic all the way through I’ve only heard of the 2012 and a 2019 vinyl mix.

    The Mofi version sounds like someone sent it through a 3-band-EQ and turned down the mids. Sometimes the high-ends sounds over the top. The anniversary mix is highly satisfying with bassdrum and bassguitar sound overwhelmingly warm and punchy at the same time. The positioning in the pan is thoughtful and satisfying as well. On all the other mixes it's more like being "somewhere".
    Good work, Giles Martin. Might be definite.

    The 1969 pressing was the surprise for me. I thought it sounded very good. I love the 2019 mix especially the fatter drum sound, tighter bass and the very nice seperation-I don't regret the purchase. The 80's UK mix also sounded quite good in many of the samples. (On second listen through a better speaker instead of my phone, the UK pressing is harsh and would fatigue my ears) The 2012 version sounded quite good but possibly a little less dynamic. The 1979 mofi was absolutely lifeless. Surprised how dead it sounded. Nice video and comparison of all these.

    When the Mo Fi version comes on, it's like a blanket was pulled off the band. It remains that way through each version. I quite like the Mo fi and think it doesn't get quite enough love. The 2019 remix is solid, and I can appreciate the fact that there's much less saturation and that the highs are quite smooth. My issue with it mainly comes down the the amount of low end and mid bass. There's too much of it and t's not particularly tight compared to the Mo-Fi, UK and Canadian pressings. I also question whether or not the remix was properly level matched between the other releases. While the Mo-Fi, UK and Canadian pressings can get harsh at times, I personally thought the UK could get a little too bright, but it's really not that bad at all. The Canadian pressing is similar, just a little more reigned in on the upper mids, hence there isn't as much presence. At least, that's what I got out of it.

    The biggest problem with the 2019 pressing is the volume is too low, with a higher signal to noise ratio. Otherwise, the point of the 2019 was to fix mixing issues such as instruments and vocals being hard panned left and right, and modernizing the mix. Giles did a good job in this regard.

    • @unabonger777
      @unabonger777 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I suspect it's a bit of a tradeoff, if this is sourced from the original multitrack and they didn't want to add a bunch of compression to muddy it up. Turning up your system to compensate for level might reveal the limitations of that system.

    I like the 2019 mix best. It sounds cleaner, overall. First, it seems to balance the channels a bit better. One thing that annoyed me about original Beatles mixes is the way they half-assed the stereo mixes. Growing up in the 80's and 90's it was these annoying stereo mixes that I heard the most (ex: Revolution). It was very irritating to listening to. Second, it reduces some distortion on the guitars and drums, but I have to wonder if some of that distortion was intentional.

  • @InfoStatz
    @InfoStatz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Interesting exercise...thanks for doing this. There is a huge difference between "Remixing" and deciding to alter or leave out content, believing that it somehow makes things "better".
    Don't wanna rain on anyone's parade, but those of us who had the unique, quasi-spiritual experience, at 17, of having a friend plop a set of non-audiophile headphones on our ears, and sticking a joint in our mouths, and letting us meld with Abbey Road, in its ORIGINAL format, realized that it was the most perfect, transcendental musical experience ever had on this plane of physical existence, notwithstanding the ensuing 60 years of chasing the addiction. Remixes are a way of supposing that you can make your very first love-making sessions with the love of your life somehow better by revisiting them with "fresh", technicolor, high speed cameras, when, in truth, it was really just black and white, and it really was a vinyl record played on a crappy Garrard turntable with closing lid, and a one-knob Tone control, and that's how we will always remember it, and those images will NEVER be improved by subjecting them to the high fidelity imagery of contemporary high definition cinematic Photo-shopping, either musically or graphically. You can dissect this all you care to, and I acknowledge that it's an interesting pursuit for those who lack the "I was there" experience and who therefore don't understand the desire to just "Let It Be". Abbey Road was more than the sum of its parts in so many ways. My first listening to it was not some friend saying, "Man, you gotta hear theses guys..." but a true, awe infused sharing of a moment of such musical magnitude that 50 years on it's apparent that the required framework for appreciating this phenomenon has completely disappeared. The pilots who flew the F4Fs and F16s and A-10s in the Iraq war were totally magnificent, but have not a whit of the grit that it took to face down a BF-109 coming straight at you with 20mm cannon blazing as you turned your P-40 head on into a balls-to-the-wall struggle of 1940s valor, skill and luck. And even today's high tech cinema cannot recreate the experience for us. By all means, carry on with the analysis and digging to find the "hidden gems" locked away in those original sessions. But, just maybe, the magic that was there when it was all new, and poinient, and mind-blowing, and was a gift for those of us who were there to experience it, fresh and new, has dissipated into the ether with only our memories to recreate it correctly. And, maybe exhuming the original recordings and "remixing" them is a valid exercise, but is not an improvement in any real sense of the words and music, and will never resurrect the Muses of that music which have long since moved on to inhabit some other deserving creations. Can you recall the Muse back into the music just by replaying the DVD or CD remixed version of the original 4 or 8 track recording that included the genius of so many engineers and musicians, and girlfriends, and lovers?
    For the record, I find all the "Remix" songs to be lacking in some very fundamental content, hard to put your finger on it, but you know it when you hear it. Or not. Thanks for this opportunity for me to revisit the memories of these tunes and the space I was in when originally hearing them...THAT is the best seat in the house.

    Great work, as always Eric. The copy of Abbey Road I've owned for decades was a late 70's US reissue, which I thought sounded fine until I acquired an early CD copy. That being said, a few years ago I also found a somewhat worn original US pressing which had a much better mix. I just bought the new 2019 record last week and I'm blown away by the detail, roundness, and DEPTH that no other version I've heard can touch. Man, that MoFi pressing is a huge disappointment. I've heard some other MoFi pressings that have what I call a gimmicky mix, that is like pushing the loudness button on an amp, boosted highs, boosted lows, and scooped mids.
