Straight Pull Showdown: Mannlicher (M95) vs Schmidt (K31)

  • In this video, we compare 2 iconic straight pull rifles, the Swiss K31 and the Steyr M95 carbine. Straight pull actions aren't too common in the military bolt action rifles but they do offer some advantages over turn-bolt actions.

    Fun comparison. M95 is a very aesthetic, quality carbine. A favorite for me. K31 is amazingly accurate and superbly crafted.

    Gotta love those straight pulls. I have a M95/30 Karabinerstutzen and I find the bolt to be decently smooth, it seems to get smoother as it warms up from firing. The Mannlicher is my favorite rifle because of the engineering and the proliferation through history but I'd love to get a K31 some day.

      yea the bad rep for the bolt is due to the conversion, a little work on the bolts and they are like glass- how they were before the conversion

    I own a M95/30, one of very few (maybe the only one) in Sweden. After I thorougly cleaned the bolt while disassembled and the chamber/receiver the rifle is pretty smooth. Accuracy wise, it shoots really well. On 300 meters you can easily shoot 5 shot groups within 10 centimeters after some training. My personal best is a 4 cm group at 300m. Not bad for a WW1 rifle.
    Currently looking for a K11 or K31, but they are extremely rare here..
    Thanks for an excellent video!

    The m95/30 sticky bolt is as a result of the conversion they did in 30 and the bolts weren't fit as well. A little bit of work on the bolt and it will be a whole lot smoother like they were intended.

    I bought an M95/30 long rifle from a gun show that was all matching and full of cosmoline that may have never been shot post rearsenal. I get 1 inch groups at 100 yds easily with new production PPU. I think that the rifles are maligned from mismatching bolts and corroded barrels from the WW2 era ammo which leads to rough actions and poor accuracy (especially the carbines with cut barrels). I am excited to see what it can do with handloads because they are very unique and elegant rifles. The K31s have better sights and the 7.5x55 has better ballistics IMHO though.

  • @ragnar338
    @ragnar338 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I understand the feeling towards those two. I like my K31: love the trigger, even more since i put a trigger stop on it, good magazine, safe but really slow safety. I use it for driven hunts, scoped, good magazine capacity but can't use the safety there. The M95 carbine is just slick - short and light, nice clip loading, perfect safety - safe but also fast. The problem i find with my rifle is that softpoints are likely to be damaged loading and unloading, could load 4 and slowly. The cases seem to like to stick; maybe due to the shape or the rechambering in 8X56R was done sloppy. It is not a rifle i would call accurate maybe an inch more likely two inch groups at 50m is what i get. I put a reddot on it to take it with me when driving or pursuing wounded game that seems to be the perfectt fit for it. I hate that it can't even hit paper at 50m when affixing the bajonet which would make sense for the intended use, can anyone offer helpt with that problem? I would always elongate the stocks so you can repeat while aiming they both are quite short.

      @lehoczkypeter8317 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As I can see I am around 3 years late, but I know the problem, and the solution. The M95 were rechambered for the 8x56R and chopped down in the early '30s. After the modification it became clear that the new ammo and the shorter barrel causes aiming point shifts when the bayonet is attached. The HUN Army then issued a new type of bayonets for the hungarian M95/31 conversations with a built in korn, optimized for aiming with the bayonet. If you can get one of these bayonets, the problem is in a big part solved. The problem is that M95/31 rifles were quick outdated as in 1935 came the new M35, built from gruond up for the new ammo, with a new bayonet design.

      the Gun show seems to be the best place. I have seen two K31's at that show in the last two years both were in very good-excellent condition. I also got a sporterized Schmit-Ruben 1889 at the gun show last year.
      the Swiss straight pulls are getting harder to come by it seems and they are definitely going up in value.

    I've had a couple of the Mannlicher and had many K31's. Although I wouldn't stand in front of either the Swiss K31 is a more precision rifle. The Mannlicher isn't quite as well refined. Plus everything about the K31 is typical of Swiss firearms, extremely well engineered and manufactured. Remember the M95 was mainly issued to the police. While even today by comparison the K31 was intended to be used in extremely difficult conditions of the Swiss Alps. And being a military issue rifle was required to operate properly ......... every time! The Gp-11 ammo is a superior cartridge to any other type of military issue ammo. and is specifically designed to take advantage of the precision nature of the K31. On the range the K31 demonstrates noticeably better accuracy as a result. However, the M95 is a hoot to shoot. It is a beast of a rifle and it will beat the crap out of you after a day of shooting. It is a hand-held cannon. And probably due to the ammo. itself I had a number of misfires with the 1938 nazi stamped 8x56 M95 ammo. While I've shot perhaps thousands of GP-11 ammo. I have never had a misfire.
    As for the shooter I notice he is obviously not familiar with the use of straight-pull rifles in that it's almost like he is afraid of "hurting" the thing. When shooting either of these the operator needs to be firm, forceful and snappy. Plus I can see he has terrible trigger control. Particularly with the K31. The K31 has by far the best military issue trigger ever. It has an extremely smooth 1st stage followed by a very crisp trigger break at about 75 oz. The shooter is just jerking the K31 trigger not even taking the 1st stage to the sear break. He's just jerking the trigger all at once, both stages which leads to decreased accuracy. In a competent K31 shooter that is a sub-MOA rifle. Whereas the M95 is in the 3 MOA range of accuracy.

    Ammo comparison is unfair! GP11 is match grade!

    Own a K31, have owned 2 through time. Had a M95, only ammo I could get was WWII nazi stamped brass, and semi rusted steel cases, both were filled with square flake powder that was slowly decomposing and had a very big blue flash with each shot, due to the corrosive nature the barrel was not that great and top grade anymore. The Swiss have really nice bores.

    Let the Swiss make their cheese and watches and dont mess with the Manlicher! If K31 was better than the M95/30 or generaly better from Manlicher rifles the countres that bought M95s at that time were going to buy K31s instead!

      The Mannlicher 1895 was well obsolete by the time the K-31 came into the world. I would take any Swiss rifle over the Mannlichers, I've owned a lot of both and never had a Mannlicher as smooth as a Swiss rifle .Or as accurate.

      @@michaelibey6700 Your personal opinion will not change the fact that M95 were used in real battle unlike the swiss K31! The K31 is like immature cheese compared to the M95!

      @@GREATRussia1990 Yes, the Swiss were smarter, they built a better rifle and also stayed out of WW2. Proven intellect!!!

    How many times are you going to say "SO" to start all of your sentences? Why is that a (ridiculous) trend these days?? Take some English grammar lessons, please!!!!
