microwaving runs the risk of it erupting coke + mentos style.
tldr: microwaves can superheat water w/o it boiling. superheated water will erupt the moment it is disturbed.
to avoid fearmongering, the stars kinda have to align for the eruption to happen but there is still A CHANCE of it happening. its not a chance i would personally take a bb on the way.
the science: if your mug/glass is new and too smooth, there wouldnt be any nucleation sites for bubbles to form when water gets heated. it then gets superheated rather than boiled as a result. the moment that water is disturbed, however, it will erupt.
coke + mentos erupts bc there is plenty of nucleation sides on the sweet to allow bubbles to form and form that spectacular geyser. while a coke geyser only leaves you w a sticky mess, superheated water can give u 3rd deg burns. ann reardon talks more abt this in one of her debunking videos, check it out!
this doesnt mean that you should scuff up all your glasses because that weakens the glass and creates another way for u to get 3rd deg burns.
the water dispenser thing connor mentioned: my parents had one when my siblings and i were small. they used it to make milk for us when we were babies. 10/10 would recommend.
