Ayreon is NOT a band, it is a project lead by Arjen Anthony Lucassen. He writes all the music, plays most of the instruments (bass, guitars, keys), devised the story / concept, casts all the singers and additional instrumentalists, records and produces the music. He is however most of the time NOT on stage and Ayreon also doesn’t tour but so far only has done residency shows in the Netherlands. In the case of the liveshows he works with a music director, which is Joost van Den Broek (who also plays keys on stage) who assembles the core band, fine tunes the arrangements, leads the rehearsals. In this process Arjen acts as overseeing producer. The first ever live show was Ayreon Universe (from which this video was taken) which was sort of a “greatest hits” show. Subsequently two other shows focused on performances of two complete albums plus some assorted tunes. I went to the Electric Castle gig (as it is by far my fave Ayreon) and they had a freaking metal castle on stage (plus the actor who played Q in Star Trek NG as narrator).

How many people, singers, talent, musicians? Arjen: Yes! What can go wrong with BVs like: Irene, Lisette and Marcela? 😂🤘
The cool thing about Ayreon is that all the albums sort of tie into the same story. 'The Source' (the album which this song is from) is technically the start of the story. It's about a race of humans that give control of their planet to a computer (the 'frame) to help solve an environmental catastrophe, but the computer determines that the best course of action is to eliminate the humans. Ten humans and the robot TH-1 escape the planet on the only interstellar ship they have (the 'Starblade') along with the ships crew and head to an ocean planet. The chemist creates a drug ('The Source', aka 'Liquid Eternity') that allows them to evolve into an 'aquatic race'. The drug also makes them basically immortal and allows them to communicate telepathically. The album ends with the survivors (ten plus the ships small crew) living on their new planet ('Planet Y') in relative peace, but in the final track we learn that TH-1 is becoming a new version of the 'frame deep in the ocean. The next album in the timeline, 01011001 ('Y') tells us how machines have now taken over this new planet, and the humans have basically merged with the machines are losing their emotions and sense of time. They now call themselves 'The Forever', since they are essentially ageless drones at this point. We also learn about how they seeded a comet with DNA and sent it to Earth, where it creates human life on our planet. The Forever believe they can live through us telepathically and that they may regain their emotions by doing so. Some of The Forever believe that we need to advance more quickly, and use their telepathy to give us medicine/technology, but this results in us advancing quicker than our morality can cope with. Eventually The Forever realize humanity is doomed and has to decide if they will give them the technology to reverse their past mistakes. Somewhere in the timeline sits the album 'The Electric Castle'From a summary by Arjen: "At the end of the journey those that successfully dealt with their personal demons find out that the voice belongs to an alien named 'Forever of the Stars', a member of an alien race living in a distant galaxy. These aliens created planet Earth and its people as an experiment so they could study, and hopefully one day experience emotions, as they themselves lost feelings eons ago." That's only three albums (less than half!) but I believe those three give you a solid foundation for how the story plays out. Also, I highly recommend any of the Electric Castle Live videos; They are just so fun to watch, plus John de Lancie ('Q' from Star Trek) plays the 'Forever of the Stars' character, which Arjen said he originally based on Q.

Keep in mind that these songs are like a metal prog Broadway musical. Each vocalist is playing a role in the story.

And you still have a lot of Nightwish songs that you can listen to where Floor just goes through the roof - no pun intended lol You could check out "Stargazers" at Tampere, "Slaying The Dreamer", "The Kinslayer" in Buenos Aires or even the classic "I Want My Tears Back"!
Why is everyone singing in this band? That is easy! Arjen is one of the few master composers on this Planet in metal and prog rock. He writes epic metal prog opera's for more than 30 years now. But he has no band. He invites the best instrumentalists he can find ( yes, Steve Vai too) and asks them to come and play in his next project. Same with the absolute worlds top of singers. They are genuinely honoured to be invited so they come. And absolutely enjoy to play for him, for themselves but just as important, to play with each other. No envy, no "me first". In the contrary. It is " together we are stronger by combining forces". That's what the ( nice and humble) Arjen does to them.
And so in the last live concert I saw 25 main singers on stage from bands you probably know and admire having a party together with these fan-tas-tic musicians. In the audience more then 60 nationalities from the world over. From Australia to South America travelling to the Netherlands just to witness this. No wonder his concerts are sold out in just five minutes. It's the "Mekka" for music lovers.

Arjen discovered Floor umpteen years ago, so to speak. Whenever Arjen asks and Floor has time, she will perform for him.
And again, this is not a band but a project. Arjen knows many artists and when he asks, they come.
True, Arjen first invited Floor to work on a project when she was around 20. She learned from him what real recording in a real studio means, so she has a lot to thank him for. Somehow he manages to be friends with everyone. Simone Simmons also once said that it was always pleasant to work with him

Because Ayreon is not a band 😂. It is the lifetime project of Arjen and he is able to unite all the stars to perform with and for him. Fantastic. He now wrote the solo debut album for Simone. Check out Simone Simons last two published songs. Typical Arjen smashed by Simone's vocals. Nuts!!!

Ayreon's music is such a wonderful rabbit hole to fall down. I'd suggest a couple of tracks to try: 'Into the Black Hole' live from Ayreon Universe ( th-cam.com/video/LIvnxsb83No/w-d-xo.html ) and 'Intergalactic Space Cusaders, again a live track from Ayreon Universe ( th-cam.com/video/yO6TisCHGhA/w-d-xo.html ). It is hard to hide Floor she is a little over 6 feet tall.
It's prog-metal musical. It's not really a band as much as a project. This was a one-off show where they actually got a lot of people together for one glorious live performance
"This band", "this band", "this band"... it's NOT a band. Ayreon is a project. When it comes to the stage, it gets the artists (singers and musicians) that are available for the few days scheduled in Tilburg, Netherlands. Floor, and her sister Irene are early crewmembers of this project (and of another one called Star One) so they regularly attend and participate. You must step out of the regular music industry formating and understand Ayreon for what it really is.
Its not a "band", its more like a rock opera project. Arjen is of course the mastermind who has the ideas and writes the songs and then tries to get all the right musicians for their parts.
You watched already "the day the world breaks down", and all his comments there should already made that clear. And for those life performances, this is also not a band that goes on tour all over the world, they only play some limited sets in the Netherlands and thats it. Touring with all those people would of course be impossible.
For example from 2019 to 2023 he did 6 concerts, 5 were in Tilburg Netherlands and 1 was in Germany.
One interesting question that just comes into my mind is however : how many time do they actually even have to practice for those concerts ? 🤔
