Let me know what you think of my Krampus!! I would love to make more figures like this-let me know what you'd want to see! Check me out on Instagram and Twitter @aceofclay
Did you get married?! I see you wearing a ring in this! Congrats! Unless you just take your ring off so it wont get messed up with clay? lol Krampus is creepy!! the hands make me shutter but so does ...all of it. Good Job!
As someone who watches Dollightful all the time; when it comes to hair she usually says to make the lengths of yarn double the length of what you need for the wefts, as a rough guide, because of how much you brush out. She also uses a pet hair brush which works best for brushing out yarn. But this was amazing! I love this Krampus!
Bambi, this is the first time I have seen Ace of Clay - amazing. He should check out Hextian on his way of making wefts of hair. Amazing doll/sculpture…..
My point is Anthony, is allowed to do things his own way and shouldn't be told to do it the same way Also these were the only times he used yarn, Dollightful and Hex are doll customizers meaning they work with it all the time, it's like telling someone who only grew lemons twice but mostly grows apples to grow their lemons like 2 seperate popular lemon growers
@@Friendstoyourend he referenced Dollightful to make hair but he may not have actually seen the process, he just seen what was used really quick. Which is why the original commenter brought up her full process
This project looks so AMAZING. 🌟 For yarn hair I've seen lots of doll artists use a wire pet brush if that helps. The wires in it are much finer and closer together.
Yarn fibers are about four inches long, so completely untwisting and brushing them out would have made a much shorter beard. I think the method that Ace used was just fine. Besides, it made the beard look a little matted which adds to the look. 😊
I think you’re one of my favorite art channels. I appreciate that you’re not loud, overly produced or gimmicky. You’re just a genuine guy, sharing what you love with the rest of us so we can get that vicarious kick while learning something along the way. I appreciate your format and your presentation style!
“I forget what I’m doing whilst I’m doing it” - sounds very familiar. I just force myself to not think about anything else (no, it doesn’t work) Truly an epic sculpture
Poppen Atelier makes doll hair out of yarn often and the way she does it is so effective. You should maybe watch some of her videos if you ever do this kind of thing again.
You've made an artdoll sculpture, and I'm in awe. The dirty grimy details, the chains, the expression, and the fabric-! There's something special about using multiple media in projects. Maybe it's the texture or the realistic appearance! You absolutely nailed it, man!
THIS IS OUTSTANDING! I do a lot of Krampus items and I love this head - another new great look. A tip about Stiffy - it is simply watered down PVA glue (we often use it for cheesecloth ghosts). Mod Podge just has an extra chemical. Your problem was the fabric - neither like polyester, prefer natural fiber (cotton). Another tip - put your liquid in a ziploc bag and put your fabric in (uses less than a bowl), squish it around to saturate and then pull it out using the top edge as a squeegee. This keeps the mess less! Thank you for all your work, techniques, lessons and just flat out great entertainment!!!!!
Really enjoyed this video but have a couple of suggestions for you: I think Krampus needs A few details such as a chin, a large wicker basket for tossing bad children into and some birch branches clutched in his left hand that he uses to whip the feet of the children as well. If you are a die-hard Krampus Fan then you will probably want to add a snake like tongue also. For ease of creating the hair pick up a draw card called a Hackle. It will make creating any hair you want a bit easier. Nice work here! If you are interested in more "Cloth Mache'" I highly recommend you take a look at Dan Reader's Book "The Simple Screamer". Quick question: Can you please tell me the make of the larger sculpting tool you use with the brass elongated ball on one end and the brass pointy on the other? I can almost make out the brand on the handle in the frame of your video where you are inserting the unpainted horns but not quite. Thanks!
More nightmares before Christmas, hee hee. It’s great that you show how much time and effort goes into these pieces. Don’t think some people understand all the time involved. This is epic!!! a great job.
Love the fact you point out the lint in the clay, I can never keep my clay clean either, so that and you saying you are nervous about painting him is so brilliant, it just makes you more grounded and reassuring to other artists. He is awesome, ah those hands! His coat, the whole look of him is brilliant, love him 😮
I love this! Your little side eye was hilarious while you were squeezing the paint out. 😂 The different angles, the sculpture, everything about this video was amazing. It kept me engaged and waiting for the next step. 💜💜💜💜
This is so fricken cool! I would love to see more of this kind of thing, how about some sirens/mermaids or maybe a horror elf (you could lean into christmas elf as it's the holiday season or go more fantasy)
when he was bending the armature for the hands i got the familiar shiver of arachnophobia but truly this sculpture is beautiful, amazing, dandy, and just plain inspiring
As a person who isn't -super- into Christmas, I will gladly make an exception for Krampus. He's perfect btw. Well done! Hope the epoxy sculpt didn't give you too much trouble like it did while sculpting the dragon head.
He is stunning! The details are intense, he is so creepy! You did an amazing job, we are proud of you too ❤️ Seeing the struggle with the yarn I suggest next time trying needle felting wool (merino specifically) because it is already smoothed out and can be matted easily between your fingers for texture. Also, this did not feel like a long video, it was fascinating to see your process ❤️
Man, every figure you make is a pure masterpiece, but this one takes the cake for me. So much intricate detail on such a large scale model, it's just too cool!! Well done!!
so incredibly talented, yet another amazing piece! Anyone else been low-key crushing on Ace for years? haha so talented, so funny and charming, sculptures everywhere...his wifes a lucky lady
Yessssss! The shadow of St.Nicolas! I love the Krampus movie so much, it was the first horror movie I’ve ever watched, and I’ve been able to convince my family to make it a Family tradition to watch it every Christmas season! Also, a fact about the movie: It was based of of movies like Dark Crystal, Gremlins, and The Labyrinth. (So everything is puppets!)
WOW! Anthony, this is by far one of the most epic pieces you've done. Thats saying a lot next to your other awesome work. Amazing, beautiful and creepy as heck. Nicely done!!!
Dollightful uses the thicker version of the thin yarn you used. I think it is called acrylic yarn. Not sure. But you did awesome with krampus regardless!!! I love it. Oh and a pet flea comb works wonders to come out the yarn.
This is exceptional!! I loved watching every second. Seeing how excited you got whilst making him, it was infectious, I wanted to cheer with you at the end. I love this format of video. More, I need more!
I’ve been waiting for this day!!!!!!!! Krampus is my favorite character like ever! It would be an amazing spectacle to see you attempt the jack in the box from the movie
Loved the more personal touch of this video and that it wasn't just the usual voiceover. And of course, the sculpture is AMAZING. You've really outdone yourself with a lot of these recent sculptures, you've grown so much as an artist.
I used to work at JoAnn, and we were told to ask everyone what they’re making. I imagined you getting asked that and had a good chuckle at what I imagined their reaction would have been 😂
Love the mention of Dollightful, I love her work! I think doing mixed media sculptures are absolutely incredible. Looking forward to seeing the next one!
Re the hair/beard: You needed to take apart the wool to start with. Ya know, how you said it is made of more than one smaller twisted thread.... untwist that first.... THEN brush it out. A wire pet brush is best because if has finer teeth. That said, you did awesome! Just trying to save you time going forwards. x
Dude this project is astonishing. It’s so cool to see your art throughout the history of the channel improve more and more and develops new techniques or use new methods!
To brush yarn out for hair, you want to use a cat brush. HeXtian uses both a plastic and metal brush. You can also then take a flat iron to the yarn to smooth it out. If you watch any of his videos, you can see what he does to make hair for his dolls
Fantastic job. Truly amazing work. Watching Krampus (2015) each year has become a holiday tradition in my house. This is a perfect representation of the character.
Krampus turned out fantastic!!! But he should be holding one of the bells that he leaves!!! Could you please make his evil elves? Or the creepy Jack in the box? Also, I would love to see you make the rest of the Dragon!!! 🐉
For hair. Use wool roving. Yes it's brittle and shorter strands. But with some very careful effort it can be done. If your looking for a fluffy look....brush backwards to separate the strands more. Other hair options include mohair(delivered from goat underbelly....very soft and naturallooking) and theatrical Crepe hair....wool based but both do the same effects with longer strands than roving wool. You could also use faux fur if you can find it in a longer length. I've been making latex masks on the indy market over 20 years now. And these are the top 3 picks for that field. But your work is the same, and will do just fine with these products
I loved your crafty approach, and the use of different mediums on him! As a doll customizer I was really worried there for a second, but the hair and beard turned out so cool, the 'badly' brushed out yarn looks like old matted hair, perfect for Krampus! Great job Anthony!
You have every right to be thrilled with your Krampus. I love mixed media sculptures. The face is outstandingly creepy and beautiful at the same time. Congratulations on this one!!!
I want to start getting into more sculpting because it's my favorite art form. Watching you is just so amazing. You make things look so much easier than they are. Your Krampus is fantastic!
For those who dont know who, or what, Krampus is... Krampus is a half goat, half human demon figure who assists Santa in a dark way: scaring children during the Christmas season who have misbehaved.
The problem you found with the hair was caused by not using the right brush, the bush that is best for that technique is a pet brush because it separates the fibers without pulling it all apart. Hope this helps ☺️
If you want a translucent finish on the living doll clay use powered pastels with water color pencils (I use Intense pencils by Derwent). I’ve been creating dolls for years and that’s what most of us use. He looks great.
Spectacularly magnificent! Love it! By the way, you may be able to save your "yellow" apoxie sculpt. The yellow is basically the resin rising to the top. Microwave it in the container for 10 second intervals, stirring after each 10 seconds until it remixes. Usually works so try it.
This is a crazy cool project. I little advice with the beard. The best way to make great doll hair out of yarn is to unravel it first and brush it out with a slicker brush you would brush your cats or dogs with. They have delicate, bendy, thin L shaped bristles to keep from hurting the animals and only 5 bucks at walmart. Buying a bulkier yarn is easier to work with. I learned how this works by watching (Poppen Atelier) on youtube making flawless barbie hair from scratch only using yarn. Hope this helps. I really love your videos and I'm loving this one in particular. Thank you so much for all your hard work putting in these videos. It really shows. You rock my dude!!!
This would be pretty cool as a tree topper if you're into that. I believe Dollightful uses a pet brush to get the yarn to floof out, after she unravels the woven strands. The brush you were using might have been a little too harsh
I have been WFH in a hybrid schedule. The work is intense and frustrating. I was watching this video today and seeing your process brought my joy. Thank you so much.
It looks great! The only thing I would recommend for cutting hair is to direct the scissors parallel with the length of the hair and use the scissors that way to create the shape you want. It will give a thinned out, more natural end to the hair; less "blocky/chunky/squared-off!" I love it! Awesome job!
Holy carp! What a project!! Still in the beginning of the video and I’m shook already at your hands!! Can’t wait to see the result.. I’ve heard that a mineral spirits/oil paint makes the best washes, ever try that? Glad you got the yarn hair worked out! The fibres are at most 3 inches long, so when fully brushed out (with a hair brush or cat brush, those bristles of yours are too stiff if you don’t want it straggly) you have to get creative for length, and generally you start from the bottom up when applying to the head, like adding shingles. He’s sooo wicked!!! Love him sooo much!!! Great job buds!!!
By the way I found that you could use a regular comb if other brushes aren’t working for the yarn or you don’t have others, but pet hair brushes do work best if you could get those. Love the end results though!!
I subscribed to your channel last year and have loved all of your amazing details you add to your sculptures. You are incredibly talented and awesome! Loved your very detailed work. You are so inspiring, I can’t say it enough, I love your work! I am a mixed media Crafter [ Running With Scissors Mixed Media Arts (definitely NOT on your scale)] and I use a lot of the same products that you do, perhaps these tips might be of use to you. Pour your Mod Podge in a zip lock bag and squish it until saturated. Mix a strong solution of warm water and Instant coffee in a spray bottle for “antiquing” or dirtying up your project. Try using alcohol ink to change the color of metals. The color mushroom is perfect for this. On another note, I sent this video to my son ( who I think looks like you... that’s why I tuned in the very first time) Shawn said he even thought it was him at first! My 97 year old mother (long time portrait artist) always wants to watch you when she visits! We all love and appreciate your many talents, LOVED Krampus!
Its amazing & beautiful! Dollightfull uses a metal cats/dogs brush to brush out the yarn then sometimes uses Elmer's to make sections then sticks them on. I hope this helps! I enjoy your work!!

Like a slicker brush
to add to this, unravelling the twist helps too. then you get two or three easier-to-brush strands instead of one harder-to-brush.
Yarn fibers are about four inches long, so completely untwisting and brushing them out would have made a much shorter beard. I think the method that Ace used was just fine. Besides, it made the beard look a little matted which adds to the look. 😊

Fantastic Krampus! He's so super creepy! I assume this will be part of your home's Christmas decorations! 😁
For adhesion, have you tried coating the wires ends with super glue and silica? Nice rough texture.
The movie that scarred me the most. Made me not like Christmas for like a year... :,)
Looks good. Definitely not the version of the German tradition of Krumpas, but definitely a good likeness to the 2015 movie. Hello from NRW Germany.
Best one yet by far!!! We need more of this kind of thing!!!!
Its amazing & beautiful! Dollightfull uses a metal cats/dogs brush to brush out the yarn then sometimes uses Elmer's to make sections then sticks them on. I hope this helps! I enjoy your work!!
I was blown away with the final results - I don't have enough words to express how freaking awesome Krapus looks!!!!!!!
Fantastic!!! You need to look up Stilt Beast Studios. You and Allen Hopps have a lot in common when it comes to creating stuff and Krampus.
Wire brushes for dogs are great for brushing yarn into hair!
Wow! Do you have plans to do any of his little helpers to go along with him? Like the demonic toys or his elves? This looks amazing, by the way.
Use a piece of glass to brush your waifs out on and use a dog brush next time. Oh, and glue down one end and it has to be shorter pieces.
we need an ace of clay jazza collab
its amazing, the hunch looks detached from the rest of the body though. I love the face and hands, the paint job is perfect as always!
Love it, especially how the robes turned out. Btw use a cat or small dog slicker brush for turning yarn into hair.
very beautiful. I also do sculpting, painting imitation wood, painting imitation marble
An almost 47min long Ace Of Clay video?
Yes. Absolutely, yes.
Gotta agree, I think this is your best sculpt that you’ve done online by far,, and I’ve liked nearly all of your previous sculpts.
