Megadeth's cover of Howlin' Wolf's I Ain't Superstitious is remarkable. And Ministry's rendition of Bob Dylan's Lay Lady Lay takes the song to a whole another level (poor Bob, someone has bettered his work... again). My first thought of one band that rocked covering songs was Type O Negative and their Day Tripper (Medley) (!) in the first place. How they managed to add to that psychedelic vibe in I Want You (She's So Heavy)... masterful. Summer Breeze is such a great one too and having recently heard the original, to my surprise, I have to agree it is not too shabby either.
Those two Nativity In Black compilations, were pretty good! The three standouts, for me, on the first, were COCs version of Lord Of This World, Sepultura’s version of Symptom Of The Universe, and as you said, White Zombie’s version of Children Of The Grave. The second wasnt quite as good, but Slayer’s version of Hand Of Doom is insanely good! Of course, the source material is so good, youd be hard pressed to not do well, as long as you keep it reasonably faithful.
@ThatMetalBloke They were amazing! Really put a shift in with a long set. Looked to be genuinely enjoying themselves despite what must be a massive tour. That new drummer is the bollocks too!
Joan Jett- Dirty Deeds( Done Dirt Cheap), Crimson and Clover, I wanna Be Your Dog, and Astrozombies are some of her best covers! Sacred Reich-War Pigs, Ramones- I Don't Want To Grow Up, Volbeat- Angelfuck, Motorhead- Whiplash and Sympathy For The Devil! Theres so many more to list! You might have to make an extended series for this list
Not only a great cover but also an extremely tasteful and well written guitar solo. Even though it’s short and not as shreddy as other Alexi solos it’s still one of my favorites by him.
@bakon180 completely agreed, Alexi is a shred legend, but there is something to be said about his less shreddier solos, I'm thinking bed of razors, every time I die, somebody out something in my drink (speaking of covers). Such a unique player, you can recognise his sound instantly, and that's one of the greatest things a guitar player can achieve
Loving your work sir! This one got me thinking because so many bands do a note for note cover which is pointless. They really do have to make it their own. My pet hate is when bands do Metallica covers and rhe vocalists change rheir voice to do a James Hetfield impression. Mentioned it in my recent review of the new Havok EP. Would love to know to know your thoughts on that one! Anyway, heres a controversial one for you. Arcane Roots version of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana. I was blown away the first time i heard it. What they did with the riff! Wow! 🔥🤘
In complete agreement with Pantera and Jimi Hendrix. Can't go wrong with any Type O Cover. If you included the combo of Summer Breeze w/ Set Me On Fire (I know that's not a cover), I'd go with that, but I'd go Cinnamon Girl. There's another Sabbath Tribute album where Machine Head does "Hole In The Sky", Helmet "Symptom Of The Universe" and Soulfly "Under The Sun. You'll dig that for sure.
Agree with Summer Breeze going into Set Me On Fire. Great pairing. I have heard the second Sabbath tribute album and totally agree with you. The Machine Head cove is great as are all the others
Johnny Cash's version of Hurt was awesome . Incredible version . Top covers imo were Motorhead's version of Enter Sandman , Body Count's covers of Hey Joe By Jimi Hendrix . Chimaira of Accept's Balls To The Wall . Monster Magnet's version of MC5 Kick Out The Jams . Avenge Sevenfold cover of Pantera's Walk also done by the band Kilgore .Also band FM Racket covering Natural Born Killaz by Dr. Dre and Ice Cube . Back to Body Count in ttheir last few albums they covered Institutionalized By Suicidal Tendencies , Raining Blood /Postmortem by Slayer and Motorhead Ace Of Spades and they were pretty good covers plus Ice -T and Slayer did a medley of Exploited's War , UK '82 and Disorder on the Judgement Night Soundtrack with Disorder which was killer . Just a few of the top of my head .
Saw White Zombie back in the day and they played Children of the Grave. Needless to say, Glasgow Barrowlands went absolutely apeshit and turned into a giant circle pit.
Hurt Johnny Cash is so, so, so, good !! Classic !! Two others that I also love (although not sure if better) are …Deftones, Simple Man by the mighty Lynyrd Skynyrd Pallbearers take on Love you to Death, Type O-
Off the top of my head: Limp Bizkit - Behind Blue Eyes, Deftones - The Chauffeur, System of a Down - Metro, Nirvana - Where Did You Sleep Last Night, Alien Ant Farm - Smooth Criminal

Motorhead - Motorhead (Hawkwind) 1000 Homo DJs - Supernaut (Sabbath) Edguy - Hymn (Ultravox) Revolting Cocks - D'ya think I'm sexy? (Rod Stewart) Anthrax - Got The Time (Joe Jackson) Whitesnake - Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City (Bobby Bland) Brutal Truth - Media Blitz (Germs) Special mention for Phobia by Fields of The Nephilim. Not strictly a cover, but its such a blatant rip off that it might as well be.
I 100% agree with your list man. Some more covers I think that are better than the originals: Status Quo 'Rocking All Over The World' & the 'Anniversary Waltz'. Machine Head's: 'The Sentinel', 'Hallowed Be Thy Name'. Metallica: 'So What' & 'Whiskey In The Jar'. BFMV: 'No Easy Way Out'. Fit For An Autopsy: 'Walk With Me In Hell'. Trivium: 'Losing My Religion' I could go on, BUT I'll stop boring you there 😂 If you need suggestions for a video titled '10 Covers Songs That Are S**T!' I got TONS, man 😂. I'd start with Machine Heads 'Message In A Bottle' 😐 lol.
@@ThatMetalBloke Ah man, I'm very jealous! I can imagine, When I saw MH live they did a cover medley of Pantera's 'Walk' & 'Fucking Hostile' & 'Becoming' because it was around Dimebags death anniversary. Was so good. I miss that era of MH (2004-2014*)

😫😫 I’m now torn! Children of the grave is my favourite Sabath song but I have never heard the white zombie version. Is my fav Sabath song really done better by someone else 😫😫 Couple of picks from me Opeth remember tomorrow iron maiden. Mushroom head crazy seal. Crossfaith Omen The Prodigy Static lullaby toxic Britney Spears I also have to say most songs off garage inc are better than the originals but probably because I heard the Metallica versions first.
Oh man, as far as Sabbath covers go, I think System of a Down's version of Snowblind is incredible. Strapping's cover of Room 429 by Cop Shoot Cop is also amazing. I know you don't like the Offspring, but I prefer their version of AFI's Totalimmortal. Anthrax did a killer version of Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun by the Beastie Boys... Man, so many to choose from. Great list though.
Great video and some great picks. The only two that immediatly jump to mind and they're not necessarily better but I really enjoy their versions are Got The Time by Anthrax and Auld Lang Syne woven into the Tom Waits song New Year's Eve. Ps. Have you heard the new Rosalie Cunningham album that came out a week ago?
Nice picks mate. I have heard the new Rosalie Cunningham and I struggled with it a bit if I'm honest. There was a lot to like but it was way more into the James Bond / Austin Powers soundtrack if that makes any sense. What were you're thoughts on it?
@ThatMetalBloke That's fair. I personally am loving it. It sounds more colourful than the last, a bit more all over the place in terms of genres which I enjoy most about her.
Fair play. I need to give it a few more chances I think. I've been listening to the Cure a ton for my album ranking so that's where my head's at right now. Enjoyed a lot of Rosalie but need to give it another few spins
Paradise Lost has some good cover's, like Missing by Everything but the Girl, & Never Take Me Alive by Spear of Destiny & Small Town Boy by Bronski Beat, which also features Devin Townsend & a good cover of Dead Can Dance's Xavier
He does sing, he just does an scream @ the beginning of it & a bit later on if memory serves me correctly, although it's been a while since I've listened to the song.
God, I’d forgotten how punishing the White Zombie cover is. Here’s ten of my fav metal/rock covers: OLD - “Who Are You?” (Black Sabbath) Metallica - “The Small Hours” (Holocaust) Type O - literally all of their covers, honestly Saigon Kick - “Space Oddity” (Bowie) Ministry - “Lay Lady Lay” (Bob Dylan) Strapping Young Lad - “Exciter” (Judas Priest) Queensrÿche - “Gonna Get Close To You” (Dalbello) Billy Idol - “Heroin” (Velvet Underground) The Wildhearts - “Pump It Up” (Elvis Costello) Pantera - “The Badge” (Poison Idea)
Metallica covering BOC with Astronomy.....and Discharge's The More I see. Tool covering Zeppelin's No Quarter. Deftones covering Lynyrd Skynyrd's Simple Man. 1349 covering Pink Floyd's Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun.
Yah, kinda obvious picks, but Metallica’s ‘Mercyful Fate’ mashup just slaps. GnR took ‘Live and Let Die’ and cranked it up to 11, and Nirvana’s spin on ‘The Man Who Sold The World’ hits so different.
Yeah the original is better It makes sense. I've heard the disturbed cover twice and I'm already sick of it. Disturbed cover of Shout, now were talking!
planet caravan - I do not like Pantera, but I do think their cover of planet caravan is excellent....but not better than the original children of the grave - I like this cover, but not more than the original summer breeze - I always hated the original version of this song. Type O's cover of it was the first type o song I ever heard. Loved this version and the band instantly. helpless - I agree. This is one of my favorite covers Metallica did house of the rising sun - I did not know this was a cover. I've never heard any other version of this song. But I like it. your mistake - I did not know this was a cover. I thought it was just a fear factory song that Freddy guested on. I never heard the original. But I like this version. hurt - agree, the cover is better all along the watchtower - agree, the cover is better the bit - I nave never heard either version of this song zodiac - I nave never heard either version of this song I am the walrus - I have never heard Oasis's version of this song, but I like the original get by with a little help from my friends - I like both versions of this song, but agree the cover is better. It also made a cool theme song to the TV Show The Wonder Years.
Metallica's cover "The Small Hours" (Holocaust) Metallica cover of "Blitzkrieg" (Blitzkrieg) Type O's cover Day Tripper (The Beatles) Nirvana's cover "My Girl" (Lead Belly) Tenacious D cover "The Last in Line" (Dio) Melvin's cover "Goin Blind" (Kiss) Anthrax cover "She" (Kiss) Megadeth cover "Anarchy in the UK" (Sex Pistols) Garth Brooks cover "Hard Luck Woman" (Kiss) Mushroomhead cover "Crazy" (Seal) Fear Factory cover "Cars" (Gary Numan) Crowbar cover "No Quarter" (Led Zeppelin)
Gary Moore doing Free`s Wishing Well on the Corridors of Power album. His version has everything the original is missing,a far superior version in my book.
Great list man!! Not metal but Heart did a jawdropping cover of Stairway to Heaven, check out the TH-cam video, it has Robert Plant with tears in his eyes 😲 I also enjoy the Dead Daisies version of Fortunate Son as well as Jesus he knows me by Ghost 🤘
I'm don't really like Rammstein anymore... but their cover of Depeche Mode - Stripped is still brilliant. Sodom - Turn Your Head Around (Tank cover) Sodom - Don't Walk Away (Tank cover) Sodom - Iron Fist (Mötorhead cover) Atrocity - The Great Commandment (Camouflage cover) Atrocity - Der Mussolini (Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft cover) Edge of Sanity - Invisible Sun (The Police cover) Entombed - Night of the Vampire (Rocky Erickson cover) Judas Priest - Better by You, Better Than Me (Spooky Tooth cover) Lifvsleda - Transylvansk Hunger (Darkthrone cover)
I'm in the minority but I was never a big fan of Cash version. It's alright but it doesn't hit me in the feels (to be fair the original is far from my fav NIN song). I love Fear Factory's take on "Your Mistake" and their version of "Dog Day Sunrise" to Head of David's original.
In a gadda da vida by slayer. The original was unlistenable. Slayer shortened it to 2 minutes and made it a banger. Honestly every metallica version is better than the original.
Disagree with the Metallica observation (love Budgie and ANL) even though i love their covers, but 100 % with you on In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. As you say, Slayer makes it listenable.
Black Label Society's cover of Sabbath's Junior's Eyes is way better in my opinion. The original just feels way too upbeat for saying it's a song about Ozzy's Dad passing away.
Yes my dude. Awesome video. A few of mine mate:
Nine Inch Nails - Dead Souls (Joy Division)
High on Fire - Oven (Melvins)
Mark Lanegan (RIP 😢) - Flatlands (Chelsea Wolfe)

Anthrax covering Radiohead's The Bends.
Therion's cover of Abba's Summer Night City.

Midge Ure - Man Who Sold the World
People only talk about Nirvana's cover but Midge Ure did an amazing version.
Crowbar - Dreamweaver so beautiful and so much darker.
Crowbar's version of Dreamweaver is fantastic.
Opera IX - Bela Lugosi’s Dead is probably my fave
Some of my picks would be:
1) My Dying Bride's version of Scarborough Fair
2) Moonspell - Ozzy's Mr. Crowley
3) Beloved Enemy - Nancy Sinatra's Some Velvet Morning
4) The Unseen - Rolling Stones Paint it Black
5) Rain Paint - The Cure's Disintegration (Not bettee, but surprisingly just as good for me)
Judas Priest's covers of Diamonds & Rust as well as Green Manalishi are 10/10
Their cover of Race With the Devil & Better By You, Better Than Me are also great.
Great choices 🤘
Summer Breeze is 👌 I regularly get that one stuck in my head. Usually when the kids have some squash, and it's Summer Fruits flavour, I'll start singing Summer Fruits, makes me feel fine...
😂 summer fruits are great as well
Great list. My favourite cover is The Mighty Mighty Bosstones cover of Detroit Rock City.
Killswitch Enagage’s cover of Holy Diver should be mentioned. It’s a perfect example of staying faithful to the original while also making it sound like a Killswitch Engage song. And I’m going to get absolutely fucking flamed for this but I think Howard’s vocals work better for the song than Dio’s.
Great cover for sure
Great list man! One of my favourites is In Flames' version of Everything Counts.
Fantastic version of a fantastic song
Fantastic list overall. The two Sabbath covers you mentioned are as perfectly done as humanly possible, staying true enough to the original while undeniably being true to the bands own sound and style. Another shout out to Type O Negative is their cover of Cinnamon Girl. Their version is better than a shot of adrenaline for me and, similar to White Zombies version of Children of the Grave, it just hits harder than Neil Young’s original version. The opening drums gets me so pumped I could Kool-aid Man myself through a wall!

Faith No More - Easy & This Guy's in Love with You. (Commodores & Burt Bacharach)
Mushroomhead - Crazy (Seal)
Enslaved - What Else is There? (Royksopp)
Cannibal Corpse - No Remorse (Metallica)
All incredible covers!
On the other hand my least favourite couple would be...
Puddle of Mudd - About a Girl (Nirvana) worst ever cover
Machine Head - Message in a Bottle (The Police).

House of the Rising Sun, fuck yes, the Animals version is fucking brilliant, that organ solo towards the end is one of my all time favorites.
Got to love Machine Heads 'Witch Hunt'. 🤘🏻

Black Magic Woman, and Judas Priest’s cover of Green Manalishi
Great choices
Paradise Lost has some good cover's, like Missing by Everything but the Girl, & Never Take Me Alive by Spear of Destiny & Small Town Boy by Bronski Beat, which also features Devin Townsend & a good cover of Dead Can Dance's Xavier
I have not heard the cover with Devin so will have to check that out. Huge fan of him and Paradise Lost
He does sing, he just does an scream @ the beginning of it & a bit later on if memory serves me correctly, although it's been a while since I've listened to the song.
God, I’d forgotten how punishing the White Zombie cover is.
Here’s ten of my fav metal/rock covers:
OLD - “Who Are You?” (Black Sabbath)
Metallica - “The Small Hours” (Holocaust)
Type O - literally all of their covers, honestly
Saigon Kick - “Space Oddity” (Bowie)
Ministry - “Lay Lady Lay” (Bob Dylan)
Strapping Young Lad - “Exciter” (Judas Priest)
Queensrÿche - “Gonna Get Close To You” (Dalbello)
Billy Idol - “Heroin” (Velvet Underground)
The Wildhearts - “Pump It Up” (Elvis Costello)
Pantera - “The Badge” (Poison Idea)
SYL cover of Exciter is excellent 🤘
Metallica covering BOC with Astronomy.....and Discharge's The More I see. Tool covering Zeppelin's No Quarter. Deftones covering Lynyrd Skynyrd's Simple Man. 1349 covering Pink Floyd's Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun.
Really love the Garage Inc album. Metallica did a fine job on all of those songs
Everything by the legendary Ten Masked Men is better than the original \m/
Any cover of any Kiss song is better than the original.
Brides of Lucifer - O Father O Satan O Sun
Moonic Productions (Otu of Kaiser) on here, does nuts-out covers of 'hits' as other rock bands/musicians. Very enjoyable pistachios.
Metallica cover of Thin Lizzy’s Whiskey in the har and Sabaton cover of Motorhead’s 1916 and there cover of Manowar’s song Kingdom Come .
Yah, kinda obvious picks, but Metallica’s ‘Mercyful Fate’ mashup just slaps. GnR took ‘Live and Let Die’ and cranked it up to 11, and Nirvana’s spin on ‘The Man Who Sold The World’ hits so different.
Great covers for sure
Please don't include the most overrated one of all time, Disturbed-The Sound of Silence or I will lose my shit!
I can't stand that song either
yeah, it sounds like beavis and butthead making fun of it. its awful.
Yeah the original is better
It makes sense.
I've heard the disturbed cover twice and I'm already sick of it.
Disturbed cover of Shout, now were talking!
Ahahaha I had the same thought... and thankfully no Smooth Criminal by AAF
planet caravan - I do not like Pantera, but I do think their cover of planet caravan is excellent....but not better than the original
children of the grave - I like this cover, but not more than the original
summer breeze - I always hated the original version of this song. Type O's cover of it was the first type o song I ever heard. Loved this version and the band instantly.
helpless - I agree. This is one of my favorite covers Metallica did
house of the rising sun - I did not know this was a cover. I've never heard any other version of this song. But I like it.
your mistake - I did not know this was a cover. I thought it was just a fear factory song that Freddy guested on. I never heard the original. But I like this version.
hurt - agree, the cover is better
all along the watchtower - agree, the cover is better
the bit - I nave never heard either version of this song
zodiac - I nave never heard either version of this song
I am the walrus - I have never heard Oasis's version of this song, but I like the original
get by with a little help from my friends - I like both versions of this song, but agree the cover is better. It also made a cool theme song to the TV Show The Wonder Years.
Metallica's cover "The Small Hours" (Holocaust)
Metallica cover of "Blitzkrieg" (Blitzkrieg)
Type O's cover Day Tripper (The Beatles)
Nirvana's cover "My Girl" (Lead Belly)
Tenacious D cover "The Last in Line" (Dio)
Melvin's cover "Goin Blind" (Kiss)
Anthrax cover "She" (Kiss)
Megadeth cover "Anarchy in the UK" (Sex Pistols)
Garth Brooks cover "Hard Luck Woman" (Kiss)
Mushroomhead cover "Crazy" (Seal)
Fear Factory cover "Cars" (Gary Numan)
Crowbar cover "No Quarter" (Led Zeppelin)
Some great choices there 🤘
Metallica Breadfan 🤘🏼
Gary Moore doing Free`s Wishing Well on the Corridors of Power album. His version has everything the original is missing,a far superior version in my book.
Great choice. Gary Moore was incredible
@@ThatMetalBloke Yep....pity he threw away his Rock side to become a Blues artist.
First to my mind if Quicksands cover of the smiths How soon is now.
Great cover
I've being 100% serious and I don't care what anyone says about the cover but it's my favorite six feet under smoke on the water. fight me
Fair enough mate. Nothing wrong with that
Brutality's- Electric Funeral cover.
Not heard that but I will 🤘
A Wildhearts album ranking perchance? New one coming up with a shit album title but hoping for quality songs.
I will have to see nearer the time but I am a huge fan 🤘
Great list man!! Not metal but Heart did a jawdropping cover of Stairway to Heaven, check out the TH-cam video, it has Robert Plant with tears in his eyes 😲 I also enjoy the Dead Daisies version of Fortunate Son as well as Jesus he knows me by Ghost 🤘
Yeah, I saw that version Heart did. Incredible cover and well worth bringing up
Gary Moore - The Messiah Will Come Again
UFO - Alone Again Or
Metallica - Astronomy
Fear Factory - Dog Day Sunrise
Dog Day Sunrise is a fantastic version
I think Judas Priest’s cover of Diamonds and Rust is better than the original and their version of Better By You Better Than Me.
Great covers for sure 🤘
How the fuck has nobody mentioned Guns’N’Roses cover of Knockin On Heaven’s Door by Bob Dylan
For those about to rock covered by Godflesh also a controversial take I prefer Vader's cover of Freezing Moon over the original.
Great choices
I'm don't really like Rammstein anymore... but their cover of Depeche Mode - Stripped is still brilliant.
Sodom - Turn Your Head Around (Tank cover)
Sodom - Don't Walk Away (Tank cover)
Sodom - Iron Fist (Mötorhead cover)
Atrocity - The Great Commandment (Camouflage cover)
Atrocity - Der Mussolini (Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft cover)
Edge of Sanity - Invisible Sun (The Police cover)
Entombed - Night of the Vampire (Rocky Erickson cover)
Judas Priest - Better by You, Better Than Me (Spooky Tooth cover)
Lifvsleda - Transylvansk Hunger (Darkthrone cover)
Completely agree with you on Rammstein cover. It is a great version
Naplam death cover of
To go off and things
By cardiacs.
Great choice. I should have put a Napalm Death track on for sure
Yeah, Joe Cocker and Johnny Cash really improved the songs.
I prefer Grip Inc.'s version of Paint it black,
Fair play
A good cover for sure
Black Label Society's cover of Sabbath's Junior's Eyes is way better in my opinion. The original just feels way too upbeat for saying it's a song about Ozzy's Dad passing away.
That is a good cover
Most covers of Dylan are better than Dylan's original.
Careful Icarus.
I prefer Saxon's version of "Court of the Crimson King" over the original.
I love that cover but I still prefer the original myself
Hey Metal Bloke - you forgot one!!
