      I'll consider it! I sometimes work with students whose goal is improving their speaking voice, and there is actually very little difference between the way I work with them and the way I work with singers. The voice is the voice, and you can train it to do whatever you like, in much the same way that you can use your legs to walk, run, hike, ride a bicycle, etc.

    Hello, my name is Angelic. I have a question. I was trained classically like this, and have the philosophy that, if you can sing classically as a foundation you can then sing whatever Genre you wish. having a classical foundation you can then develop your own style if you wish to move into other styles of singing in your career. I was told the other day that it's better to teach and sing if you want to do other styles other than classical that you should learn in different ways than classical. I don't agree with him and feel that I need to continue teaching all students in a classical style first to build a good solid strong foundation they can use for any technique? do you agree?

    • @ClaudiaFriedlander
      @ClaudiaFriedlander  5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I agree… but it’s a little complicated. There is no one single way to teach classical singing technique, so when one singers says that they have a classical singing foundation it may mean something very different from what another singer means by it. The goal of any classical singing technique, though, is the same: maximal vocal range, stamina, power, flexibility, and timbral nuance. These qualities are essential for singing opera because the vocal writing demands it, and because opera singers need to be able to project well over an orchestra without amplification over the course of long performances. So a singer who develops these abilities can apply them to any style of music, and most other styles generally require somewhat less range, stamina, projection power, etc. than classical singing does. For many singers, classical technique would require as much as an octave above what they would normally need for pop music, so high notes are a breeze. They’d develop breath management skills that go beyond what they would need to execute most long phrases in their repertoire. If you train for a marathon, you can complete a 5K with panache.
      That said, I believe that my colleagues who work primarily with pop singers would argue that singing technique is singing technique, regardless, and that a good voice teacher of any style will help their students to maximize their vocal capabilities.

    But why in German? Why classical music? Why not rock, pop or country?

    • @ClaudiaFriedlander
      @ClaudiaFriedlander  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question!
      The short answer is that there isn't really a good reason to use a classical song in German to demonstrate coordination for articulation. However, this video was one of a series produced by the Weill Music Institute of Carnegie Hall, and they had hired me to lead an online discussion group for young classical singers who were studying rep like the piece in this video.
      A longer answer is that while working on coordination like this can be great for singers in all languages, performing all styles, classical singing requires a comparatively extreme approach to resonance because under nearly all circumstances, classical singers perform unamplified. So they need to take a very specific and consistent approach to how they create resonance space and articulate their song texts, or no one will be able to hear them. Contemporary singing styles usually feature a much more natural and relaxed approach to diction, and we can still hear the singer because they are using a mic.
      That said, there are awesome contemporary songs in German, too. th-cam.com/video/WXv31OmnKqQ/w-d-xo.html

      @@ClaudiaFriedlander but .. this style died 150 years ago...

    • @ClaudiaFriedlander
      @ClaudiaFriedlander  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kambata1 What do you mean?
      Classical music certainly no longer dominates where live music performance is concerned. Far more people attend rock/pop concerts and musical theatre performances than attend opera, symphony performances, etc. But 150 years is quite an exaggeration-I'd say that classical music began to lose traction more like 70 years ago where live performance is concerned, and has lost no traction at all where things like film and television scores are concerned. The bigger a blockbuster film's production values, the more likely they've got a full orchestra in the soundtrack, performing music by a classically trained composer.
      My own interest in classical singing styles has more to do with the visceral experience of using my voice that way. It's a really intense experience, to be able to make powerful, expressive sounds with my own body, being able to access a wide range, project without amplification, etc. There are other styles that also benefit from this skill, e.g. metal and gospel.
