It's obvious that you love your dogs. Mark Twain once said, "I don't know where dogs go when they die, but, even if they don't go to heaven, I want to go where they go." I'm with him.
My display went out after 15 months after a power outage. The rep said this was a known problem. They offered to replace the display for $75. I replaced the weather station with a La Crosse. MUCH BETTER!
Just got my Accu Rite Weather Station (2 solar panel, like yours) and bought a pole to mount it 10.5’ above the ground in an open area. Was going to put it on my house gable, but not sure that would leave the temperature reading stay accurate. Calibrated the rain gauge, minimal hassle. My biggest issue is simply getting high enough to see the ‘bubble’ on TOP of the unit to level it! Looking forward to the use of this instrument!
looks like you got the improved model with 2 solar panels. i had one from about 3 years ago... the temp went wild last summer... worked closely with the customer service people and got the 2 solar panel replacement head and everything works great. great people and a good company
My wife purchased this same setup for me as a Christmas gift. I too am a bit of a Wx geek and it she picked up on it despite my thinking I wasn't obvious. I also have been a fan of the weather Underground for a while. I like that WU makes things local. Living (not far from you) in the same mountains, I find that the weather reports coming from the major population areas are rarely accurate. Currently, mine is still in it's "learning mode but it has worked flawlessly right out of the box. I have only had it up and running for 8 days, so I can't offer a more definitive review, but, so far so good. I did go through the process of getting mine online and connected to Weather Underground but have stopped transmitting until the "learning" period is over so that I'm not sending out questionable data. I'll go live with it next week I suspect. I agree with the issue of the snow build up blocking the wind thing and is why I will not likely raise mine much higher in the air than it currently is. Right now I have it attached to my deck railing which puts it at roughly 18' off the ground (vs the 30' recommended). This way I can still reach it to clear the snow off. And YES, the brightness of the screen is nothing short of obnoxious. For now, it's a 9.5 out of 10 score. Our Station- MATHER FARM, KNYONEON17
yes, it always colder in my yard than what the TV weather says. i think the learning mode is about weather forecasts on the display unit, out of the box it sends reliable raw data to weather underground, from what i have read. i'd buy a second display for the bedroom if it wasn't so bright. thx!
I have the 00502A1 model (non-net). It has worked very well for 4+ years. The only problem was the rain cups stopped functioning when wasps invaded the interior of the unit!
Nice Video, and many thanks for including the twins. It's the aminals that always make my day. But the weather is a close second and the sun better than the rain.
Dogs are awesome! I have had many over my long life, but the Great Dane I currently have has loved me like no other. Now, if only I could get him interested in my AcuRite 01024M!
Thanks for a great video... I'm a wx geek too... gone thru several LaCross units with rapid fire to the wunderground starting about 10 or 15 years ago (not everybody can or wants to pay $300 or $400 or more or more for a Davis or OS station) Your video sealed the deal on the research I had done, Thank You and yes, when I order my station tomorrow I will use your amazon link to help pay the bills... Turned out that link was for the same one I had decided to buy before I watched your video! Thanks again for taking the time to make and post your review.
thx Rick, appreciate the kind words. i see that AcuRite sells an extension cable so you can house the batteries at the bottom of the pole now, but i'll keep mine where it is. thx!
My boyfriend & his grandfather both got these for Christmas...not as nice of a model, I don't think, but my boyfriend is really enjoying his so far. We don't have internet at our house so I guess it's good he didn't get the super fancy one, but overall, it's a nice gadget to have.
Hey Eric, my husband, Richard loves his gadgets! So he researched and decided on what I believe is the same weather station you got. We have had this station for about a year now and get a big kick out of it. Not sure if the high winds over 25 MPH can be documented with ours. And we haven't had any measurable snow yet here in Kentucky, but will be watching for any snow to build up. :))) We did have however a problem with spider nests that built their cocoon in the rain gauge. And this really messes with the calibrations until they are cleaned out. So FYI, I know you live in more of a wooded area than we do... lol Always enjoy yall's videos & the Labs.
Those AcuRite's are good, I've used them for years. The 5-in-1 sensor has been out for more than a decade, which means parts are available everywhere, and very cheap as well. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I like the older and more durable designs better than modern weather stations that look cheap and flimsy.
A word of warning: These Acu-rite stations are cheap for a reason: they are not that accurate. I've seen them as much as 4-5 degrees off with several. If that's not a big deal to you, no worries, but if you want something more accurate, look at an Ambient Weather WS-1200 or a Davis Vantage Vue.
"AcuCrap" is GARBAGE!! I've had TWO UNITS go bad in the last 3 years and this shit company refuses to do anything about it the minute the unit goes out of their VERY SHORT Warranty!! I WARN YOU, DO NOT BUY AN AcuCrap Weather station of ANY model!! They have NO TELEPHONE SUPPORT, You'll wait for CHAT for over an hour and their support people are crap!
I'm actually working on building a weather station. I'll send you the plans at some point - fairly low tech but I think it will work well - great video!
Great info Eric. This is intriguing. Thanks for the information and the links. Always appreciate your videos. Love your channel (and of coarse seeing the labs, lol). Have a good one
I bought this unit and it worked fine for two years...then the outside temp quit working (shows -40 all the time) so I took it apart and saw how poorly it was set to be in the weather..circuit board that has no protections and corrosion everywhere. I got on line and found lots of folks who also had the temp quit, wind speed, etc. All due to electronics that are not very well protected. I also ordered and installed a guys fix for the temp read out for $10, but that didn't work either...so I just tossed it in the trash today. From what I gather many of these units are not made well and perhaps this is just what you have to put up with with a weather station. Not wanting to spend $500 on one either. I will miss the logging of the temps with long term highs and lows and how much rain has fallen since reset, but just can't see spending a car payment on the hobby weather info. Good luck with yours.
Good video, thank's for that. I just got one. Hopefully can get the rain gauge calibrated without too much problem. Think I'll try spraying it down with silicone to help the fake snow we have been getting lately here in western NY, from accumulating too much on the chassis. The learning phase is supposed to be for the barometer to self-calibrate. But in the end i suppose, you get what you pay for. Subbed.
If you spray silicone on the unit, be sure to cover the sensors before spraying, or dismantle it to spray the outer covers. Silicone spray can give inaccurate readings or damage the sensors. Another way to achieve what you are trying to do , is to use a wipe with silicone to apply it by hand. After three years of continuous use in the Pacific Northwest, my unit has not had a problem with snow clogs or such.
Hi Eric, Will from the weekend homestead sent me to your channel.... Its funny he sent me to your channel and I get here and you are talking about a weather center, earlier today I was looking at those online! Anyways, I have a lot of your video's to watch and catch up on what you have going on! Your channel looks to have a lot of valuable and interesting content and information. ~ Brad
Top number on the Monitor is for total rainfall for the day. the bottom two numbers display Total for the year, or month or past several days. One can toggle the bottom numbers by pushing the right hand button on the Monitor. Mine shows an umbrella symbol making it easy to figure out the function of the button.
What kind of a silly question is that? THERE ARE ALWAYS TREATS! We'd be dangerous neighbors... thank you for the review... I've been looking at that weather station for weeks now... hmmmm. Went to WX underground... very cool site. Yes, I'm a WX junkie too, especially here in the Pacific North West... (commercial pilot) Thanks for the info! TREATS!
Hi Eric, this is a pretty good system. the data is sent from your unit to the AcuRite site, then WeatherUndergound pings that data. so its not a direct connect like my old system, but its much less expensive too. and yes, the camera operator always has treats. thx!
Thanks for the video. if the snow piles up do you think that effects the temperature sensing, considering that the solar panels (which would be blocked by the snow) run the fan which blows air over the temp sensor?
Did I see this in costco for $60-70? Was thinking strongly about getting this at the time...it's still not too late, i'm undecided. Wild be good to see more of the screen in use.
AcuRite sells several models, to have it connect to weather underground you have to get a certain model that has all the parts needed to connect it to the internet. the link to the model i use is in the info section below the video. thx!
I bought this unit at Costco, and it's well worth the price. To buy it direct from Accurite the units sell for anywhere from $99.00 to about $249.00 depending on some features.
Mine, (not connected to internet), stopped it's connection to my station outside. Has this happened to you? New batteries in both, still won't reconnect.
Hi Eric. I enjoy your videos. Just wondering how you use the information you get from the weather station. Do you keep a journal, use it to help maintain your garden? Just wondering, thanks.
I wanna know about the data transmission between the sensors (mounted outdoors) and this little display console (indoors)? I have to mount this for a feasibility study for wind energy generation in a remote area where there is no electricity and internet at the moment. Is this a suitable and gonna serve my purpose?
You will need AC power for the monitor, but not for the outdoor sensor unit. The monitor does have three AA batteries for connection to the Outdoor sensor, but may not show a display on the monitor screen . That doesn't mean it is not recording data however. The monitor can be hooked into a computer for download of the data via a USB cable.
hi Eric, do you have ideas on how to remotely measure snowfall? when I am away from home I can see the snow coming down via a nest camera pointed out the window but it's hard to tell how many inches. I can email my neighbor and ask about the snow but I'm compelled to come up with a way to measure it remotely.
Hi Eric, I'm a weather geek myself and have been looking at weather stations for a while but it is a bit overwhelming with choices and price, so I was really excited to see your review and have ordered one (can't wait). It seems most recommend 30ish ft is best for placement and obviously in an as open place as possible. I was thinking of mounting mine on my shed roof which is about 15 ft but is in a very open spot. I live in Maine so my concern is the snow issue you pointed out and will I have to climb up on the roof every time it snows. . Are you keeping yours at a reachable height primarily for this or do you plan on mounting it higher? My station will be about 75 ft and 3 walls from where the smart hub will be. Hopefully the signal will reach. Appreciate any recommendations.
Hi Dan, mbe you could make a long broom thing to clean off the snow, i'm not big on ladders. i have a lot of trees, so keeping the weather station at a low height is fine with me, i won't get a very accurate wind direction anyway. you migh consider running an ethernet cable from the router and move the smart hub closer to where the station will be. thx!
really cool. have you heard of or gotten the usb "dongle" that let's you download weather data and a real time pic strait from satellites overhead?? it's easy and pretty cool. let me know if ya want a link.
GardenFork . This comes from a you tube channel jokingly called tin hat ranch. I am sure if you make an antenna like he shows you can get more detail but I did it with a cheep little antenna that came with the usb stick. the link takes you to tin hat ranches web page with links to the videos he did showing some stuff you can do with the usb dongle. tinhatranch.com/how-to-detect-drones-predict-weather-and-more-with-sdr-rtl-and-nooelec/
there is a fan in the unit - powered by those little solar panels - that circulates air around the temp sensor to provide accurate readings. i have not read any complaints about it. thx!
i haven't replaced them yet. I have not read any complaints about short life of the batteries. if you are in a cold area, the lithium AA batteries are a must. i always buy Duracell or Eveready brand, not the cheap ones. thx!
I have found the batteries in the outdoor sensor last about a year if using Alkalines. They may last a bit longer if using the Lithium batteries, but not sure. Lithiums are recommended if living in an area with extreme temperature changes. If battery life is a problem due to location of the outdoor sensor, buy the Remote Battery accessory which replaces the batteries in the sensor unit with a block that snaps in place where the batteries go. It has 30' of cable and a remote battery box allowing the battery box to be located at ground level either indoors or outside. I have this option on my Weather Station , and it works great!!
Why not build your own then when anything breaks you can repair it yourself? The electronic sensors that you need to build a weather station are really cheap & easy to connect to an arduino or rasberry pie board that also has wi-fi. Start off with just one sensor and then keep adding to your weather station until you have everything you want or need.
i have ben looking at Good/higher end & Davis Makes probably the Very Best weather stations they are Wired & Solar Powered the 2 Very Best one is The Davis vantage pro 2 an one other i cant remember the model atm) And Then The Second Best as far as i can Tell That is a Little more Cost Effective is The Ambient Weather WS-5000 it is like 450$ & no moving parts to go bad Then The One i want is The Ambient Weather WS-7078 Or The WS-2902C For Now..But A Davis Or The WS-5000 will Probably be a 5-10 Year From Now But Until my Funds Allow I Want The WS-7078 That Will do 98% That The Davis and Top Ws-5000 Will Do But Cost Less Than 200$ and i don't know about you but that's a lot easier to save than 450$+ Imo But Buy Once Cry Once as They Say And it is Fairly Comon to see them Running 8-10 Years Later..I Had Several Cheep Ones That All Die Within a Year Or So and I Donot Like Buying Cheep Junk any more(Walmart Crap)..But Do Your Home Work & Find What You Like For You & Your Budget !!
you get hyper-local weather information. I use it to track frost dates and how much rain we get each week. if you hook the weather station to Weather Underground it will archive the weather data so you can search through it or download it into a spreadsheet. Plus if one is a weather geek like me, its just fun to have. thx!
I own one and live in a rural area so accurate weather reports for my area are sparse. Mine has given me several early warnings of severe weather hitting my area. A year ago a tornado hit our nearest airport. Even though they have a National Weather Service reporting station, it didn't report the weather conditions until after the tornado had hit. The notification didn't come out on local media (Cell phone alerts ,etc) until the storm cell had left the immediate area. I could see the barometric change as it happened before it hit the airport. It doesn't sound like much, but as a City Official for my town, I have to know what potential dangers might affect my fellow citizens.
@@donaldsaxton7911 That's why people in my town have weather stations on their property as we live in the middle of nowhere about 20 miles from the nearest weather station and elevation varies significantly from the station and the town that i live in.
I'll be interested to hear how this works out for you in the future. We have an Acurite weather station as well with the SmartHub connecting to WeatherUnderground for a little over four years. My take on the Acurite system is a just a little different than yours. Oddly enough I have a video review in progress that will be up in about a week. You may like the hack I'm working on and at some point will probably need it. KNYTULLY5 is our WU location.
its not a perfect unit, but for the price, its pretty good. my previous rig had a direct connection to WeatherUnderground and worked flawlessly, but it was very expensive. so for the $ of this one, i'm good with it. I don't love that the data has to go to AcuRite site then to Weather Underground. mbe we could build something with a raspberry pi to do a direct connect.
I have purchased two units and the sensor has stopped working on them one within the a year and the second just after a year I personally would not recommend this unit.
you're not the first to ask that! the web is a great thing, but not everyone wants to have their face all over TH-cam. but I do love meeting cool people like yourself, thx! eric.
the weather station will work fine, you would have to check with AcuRite about connecting from Germany to their US website for the WeatherUnderground connection. thx!

I also love your two dogs with their synchronised movements!

I have had these Acurite 5 in 1 for a decade or more and really like them. You can buy parts when the wind vane or speed cups break
Couldn't agree more. I have the exact same model for a year now and we are on the same batteries still. Love the unit and works great
so far this has been good. the only issue is when snow piles up on the unit, hampering wind speed. thx!

Are you keeping yours at a reachable height primarily for this or do you plan on mounting it higher? My station will be about 75 ft and 3 walls from where the smart hub will be. Hopefully the signal will reach.
Appreciate any recommendations.
Hi Dan, mbe you could make a long broom thing to clean off the snow, i'm not big on ladders. i have a lot of trees, so keeping the weather station at a low height is fine with me, i won't get a very accurate wind direction anyway. you migh consider running an ethernet cable from the router and move the smart hub closer to where the station will be. thx!
Show the "Co-Anchor" she sounds delightful...
+1 for Weather Underground
yes, they are my go to site for weather info, love how i can see weather data from other home weather stations nearby. thx!
Love your videos man, keep it up!
Hi Javier, thanks for the note! eric.
really cool. have you heard of or gotten the usb "dongle" that let's you download weather data and a real time pic strait from satellites overhead?? it's easy and pretty cool. let me know if ya want a link.
+EMS*SurVival yes please! Eric@gardenfork.tv
When you put it out in the cold (under direct sunlight) affects the temperature?
there is a fan in the unit - powered by those little solar panels - that circulates air around the temp sensor to provide accurate readings. i have not read any complaints about it. thx!
Do you know the estimated battery life for the AAs? Have you had to replace them yet?
i haven't replaced them yet.
Acurite said dont use those lithium batteries unless its minus 4 or below warm weather can mess the unit up just waunted to let u know
And no heavy duty batteries just. Alkaline name. Brand batteries
Why not build your own then when anything breaks you can repair it yourself? The electronic sensors that you need to build a weather station are really cheap & easy to connect to an arduino or rasberry pie board that also has wi-fi. Start off with just one sensor and then keep adding to your weather station until you have everything you want or need.
good point Chris, its on my list of projects, thx! eric
How fast does it update wind speed?
Awesome video, very informative.
Thanks for the video enjoyed watching it.
nice review. thanks.
i have ben looking at Good/higher end & Davis Makes probably the Very Best weather stations they are Wired & Solar Powered the 2 Very Best one is The Davis vantage pro 2 an one other i cant remember the model atm) And Then The Second Best as far as i can Tell That is a Little more Cost Effective is The Ambient Weather WS-5000 it is like 450$ & no moving parts to go bad Then The One i want is The Ambient Weather WS-7078 Or The WS-2902C For Now..But A Davis Or The WS-5000 will Probably be a 5-10 Year From Now But Until my Funds Allow I Want The WS-7078 That Will do 98% That The Davis and Top Ws-5000 Will Do But Cost Less Than 200$ and i don't know about you but that's a lot easier to save than 450$+ Imo But Buy Once Cry Once as They Say And it is Fairly Comon to see them Running 8-10 Years Later..I Had Several Cheep Ones That All Die Within a Year Or So and I Donot Like Buying Cheep Junk any more(Walmart Crap)..But Do Your Home Work & Find What You Like For You & Your Budget !!
The temperature in Celsius degrees are?
you can display the temp is celsius if you want, just have to change the settings. thx!
Thanks so much!
HA! so our station- MATHER FARM, KNYONEON17 is officially up, on Weatherunderground. .... Ok so I think that's kinda cool anyways...
great! i use their two apps to check on the weather, they work great.
can someone tell me why anyone would need one of those weather stations. I´m really curious (its a serious question)
you get hyper-local weather information. I use it to track frost dates and how much rain we get each week. if you hook the weather station to Weather Underground it will archive the weather data so you can search through it or download it into a spreadsheet. Plus if one is a weather geek like me, its just fun to have. thx!
ok thanks

Underground
you never show camera lady, why not? just asking
she doesn't want to be on the internet, can't blame her. thx!
Ok just wanted to know
you're not the first to ask that! the web is a great thing, but not everyone wants to have their face all over TH-cam. but I do love meeting cool people like yourself, thx! eric.
My son is a TH-camr and I told him not to put me on it either
Is it usable in GERMANY ?
:-)
the weather station will work fine, you would have to check with AcuRite about connecting from Germany to their US website for the WeatherUnderground connection. thx!
I do believe it is compatible with metric measurements so yes it would work in Germany.
