    Well, we know that we can't make anyone so essential -- we have to go on living. Still, this theme of utter desolation and incapacitation after a breakup has been a dramatic and frequent theme in pop music since its inception, indeed in all art of the ages. Elmer, a fascinating enigma, was a multidimensional interpreter, who could sound heartsick, as the material demanded, but never pathetic. Merrill Kline's pulsing brass bass seems to say here, "Life must go on!"
