    The fact that they made the only lesbian character rapey af is just wow. Takes me back to the days where my dorm room mate refused to share a room with me cause she was sure i would 'do something' to her at night... We had been roomates for more than 5 months at this point before she found out i like women.

    Pitch Perfect is a great example of performative inclusion. Any characters that represent a marginalized group or sub-culture are relegated to the background or only brought forth to play into a very damaging stereotype. It's all disappointing, especially because none of the straight pairings had an ounce of chemistry and charm that Becca and Chloe did. Great video!

      It’s fucking wild how much that’s still done but they have learned to mask it so a ton of people don’t realize it

    • @Tranitosaur
      @Tranitosaur ปีที่แล้ว +21

      The whole Pitch Perfect were a bunch of stereotypes though. I think people forgot that part. Not only the marginalized people. The old man was stereotyped as a misoginist which isn't true for all old men, but it's a stereotype. Becca was the alternative, quirky and misunderstood girl that gets the guy. Fat Amy the funny fat side character that only has comedy as her personality and helps the main character. Benji the awkward nerd dude, that is just too geeky to even function. Stacie the dumb, slutty girl who is always horny. Cynthia Rose is a lesbian that got the bad forced stereotype (not real stereotype) where they're after all women and sexually assaults them. ETC.
      I guess Beca and Chloe are the stereotype queer bait

    • @amy2089
      @amy2089 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      It’s about what stereotypes should be considered marginal and would be considered more punching down. The butchy predatory and blackness of Cynthia Rose’s character is significantly more negative than the other stereotypes. It would been more for laughs if they made Stacie slutty and gay, and predatory goes after Cynthia Rose (still butchy but straight, and is actually on the defensive).
      The marketing of queer baiting is crazy tho, like shit the 3rd movie should be stoned to death. I feel bad for the actresses… comedy did like to ride on the gay trope a lot in the 2010s. Britney definitely was awkward about it.

    • @chandley22
      @chandley22 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Tranitosaur Good point. I think you also have to take in how much the movies divert from that base character stereotype. Does Cynthia, for example, as the black, butch-coded lesbian progress beyond that? The one backstory note we get is when she came out as a gambling addict, but that's mainly played as a joke because it subverts the traditional 'gay coming out.' In the following movies she is largely a background player; that's partially because they added a lot more characters to the Bellas; but even so she's not written with any other characteristics than being stereo-typically predatory. While stereotypes can be a foundation to create a character on top of, the writers should still consider whether or not a particular stereotype is negative to the community it depicts.

    Maybe I just never saw the trailers but I never got the vibe that Bechloe was ever really an endgame. The only LGBT character they could show in the first film was a lesbian predator and her ex used for a blink-and-you'll-miss-it joke/twist. LGBT characters can be introduced later but it's a hell of a tonesetter.

I also never labelled her as lesbian, bi or pan, so I'm not sure why you're bringing that up. My point was that it was probably uncomfortable being part of a franchise that didn't take sapphicness seriously as a sapphic person. Your comment seems to be made in bad faith.

They said the realization that rebel was closeted at the time adds a layer of sadness which is a valid interpretation clearly coming from their personal perspective. I didn’t read it to be implying anything about Rebel’s coming out which makes your tone in both your comments seem misplaced.

    I think this franchise was a perfect example of how fan reaction/perception can alter an entire franchise. In the first film, the focus is on both Beca AND Jesse, as well as their respective groups. However, by the second film Jesse becomes a side character. They actually filmed an entire Beca and Jesse storyline that was cut from the second movie. Then, in the third film Jesse and the other Treblemakers are removed completely. In the end, neither "Jeca" or "Bechloe" fans were happy. Which begs the question - what was the point? Personally, I was a fan of Beca and Jesse and their erasure in the subsequent sequels frustrated me. That being said, if the writers and producers had genuinely opted to make Beca and Chloe happen I would've understood. Instead, the producers resorted to queerbaiting and pitting the two couples against each other. If they were never serious about Bechloe (and honestly, I don't think it was ever the writers intention to put them together) then they should've continued the Beca and Jesse plot line because it was one of the only actual fleshed out storylines holding the movies together. Instead the writers refused to "commit" to either of the couples and as a result we're left with a mediocre sequel and a third movie that feels like a poorly written fanfiction. I truly believe that the downfall of many franchises occurs when writers and producers pay too much attention to "what the fans want" from sequels.

      I don’t believe bechloe was a thing, but I think the producers may have put scenes in the second film to “wink” at the fans who wanted it. It’s like a way to say, “we see you” but then they can go on with their original vision. But because some fans deeply wanted it to be realized, the producers actions were callous and queer baiting.
      I just feel like, if you want to ship or create your own version of events, that’s totally fine and reasonable. But if it doesn’t come together, who cares? Your story could be tons better and maybe could be a story you legit create. But it’s not our place as a fan to dictate how a company tells the story they want to tell.

I remember watching the movie as a little closeted lesbian, getting definite vibes from chloe and beca, and feeling so seen and validated when I discovered thousands of people online saw the same thing I did. The queerbaiting felt hella cruel, esp when you're a closeted teen trying to find some escape and representation. But I'll always be ride or die for Anna Kendrick. It really felt like she had our backs in all those interviews, and her and brittany posting like bechloe insta pics whenever they were together. I was waiting for a video like this. I am a trans man, but I had identified as a wlw throughout my teens and early twenties, and am still involved (to a certain, appropriate degree) in lesbian fandom and spaces. I was also a die-hard Bechloe shipper on Tumblr throughout the Pitch Perfect franchise. I'm a fan of all the films, they're fun and something to watch for a pick-me-up, but I remember in 2018 being absolutely dumbfounded by the advertising for PP3. I was cynical enough to know that they weren't going to actually have Beca and Chloe get together, but I couldn't help but engage in the hype the fandom had at the time. It was so blatant! Not even a hint, not subtext--completely direct. It was so direct, in fact, that it gave me a sliver of doubt. I'd categorize it, as well as the marketing for Riverdale season 1, as cruel. To a community who was especially lacking in representation at the time. It upsets me to this day, because I remember how excited everyone got, and then how disappointed they were after.

      Sorry for the tangent but With my little knowledge of queer history it sorta makes me smile that the Transmacs lesbian solidarity/ convergence is still central within our community today. Before trans visibility/ acceptance was more prevalent, it was incredibly common for sapphic aligned people to socially transition into masculine roles, while persisting within the sapphic community. It was just accepted that some girls like girls and some people who were raised as girls also like girls but don’t really identify as one themselves whatever that specifically meant to them. I believe these roots are why lesbians are statistically most likely to be trans Allies than any other demographic.

    I've been in the bechloe fandom so long I should qualify for a veterans' discount, and I've never seen anyone make a video like this so thank you for that!
    I was a very young, closeted teen when I got into this fandom. I didn't have a lot of experience with how homophobic the mainstream film industry could be, and hoped against hope that they would make bechloe canon in the sequels. This video really clarifies a lot of things I couldn't see at the time. Particularly with the treatment of Cynthia Rose, I don't know how I ever thought this franchise would be capable of respecting queer people. The "representation" of a canon lesbian character is outweighed by centuries-old homophobic and racist stereotypes.
    It always felt particularly cruel the way the story would dance around Beca and Chloe's potential queerness. Like they would just throw random bits of queercoding into the narrative in a non-linear and shallow way, feeding scraps to queer fans in a way that betrayed their fundamental lack of concern for what those fans wanted. Especially by attempting to re-affirm both characters' heterosexuality in the final movie, despite the SHOCKINGLY blatant bechloe-centric advertisements.

    There's a few movies in the same time frame that share this same level of queer baiting unbeknownst to the extraordinarily queer audience who were really watching the film and it's a shame that none of them had any payoff. In the last film there was just the perfect moment at the end for Beca and Chloe, after spending the whole movie on this journey of the group breaking apart and finally getting to a place where they realized that they wanted to stay close no matter what, that it makes almost no sense to end it off with Chloe's kiss with Chicago. It cheapens her entire storyline and it would've been just generally more impactful if they did follow through on this relationship. bechloe was my first introduction to queer anything as a teenager and as an adult who still loves the first film it's incredibly frustrating to see how the director's handled the comings of a queer ship. I hate when its all will they won't they and personally as the movies progressed the possibility of an actual main queer romance should've been explored more. I don't think jesse should've ever been the main love interest

    Like they made my lesbian heart feel so good and crave love while also crushing it into a million pieces and make me really sad...
    Supercorp definitely tortured me longer tho bc the mf queerbait just kept coming for many as in five seasons straight (pun was not intended and does not make me feel good rn)
    The writers and producers and studios all knew damn well what they were doing (*) and I feel like the actors disagree but their hands were tied...
    * like okay I looked at two of my best friends like bechloe and supercorp look at each other but I was madly inlove with them ffs LOOKING SMILINGLY AND PININGLY AT UR "BEST FRIEND" FROM A 15 METER DISTANCE WHILE TALKING TO A GUY U HAVE A CRUSH ON IS NOT PLATONIC, FLYING AROUND THE WORLD TO GET UR BUDDYS FAVOURITE FOOD AND LONGINGLY SMILE AT THEM WHEREVER THEY ARE IS NOT PLATONIC

    I'm not a bechloe shipper this is actually my first encounter with this ship and I still don't ship these characters. But the thing is why are film makers/writers even hesitant or even completely avoided giving a PROPER LGBT+ representation on this film. This wasn't made on the 90s or made for kids where they have to constantly have to queer code people, I mean they manage to have a lesbian character (unfortunately a predatory one). And their audience clearly is made up of majority LGBT+ people and allies. They have NO reason to hesitate, be it bechloe or if they really don't want the main characters to be queer just make a genuine and proper one. With all the queerbaiting they did, they definitely could make a proper LGBT+ representation, but it's clear that they CHOSE not to have it, and that is a huge side eye to the filmmakers and writers. They just use the community, doesn't take us seriously and doesn't even just respect us

    great Video^^ but one thing bugged me al throughout your analysis: The "queerbaiting" snippet of Dumbledore ans Grindelwald that you showed in 'what is queerbaiting'
    In my opinion ist not queerbaiting because the charakters had an canon, confirmed romantic relationship. Yet queerbaiting just lingers with the question: 'what if?'

      I mean, I'd argue that they had a different type of queerbaiting applied to their relationship. It's been so long since I've taken anything jkr has to say with anything but scorn, but as far as I remember when she was pulling her 'dumbledore is gay, no really!' press tour the line was that they might not have even hooked up. They just had two weeks of an intense crush that ended in treasure hunting and death, and then dumbledore never had a romantic feeling again because he's pure like that. ✨ Representation ✨

      I haven't seen the third Fantastic Beasts film but the marketing for the second film (in the UK)made it look like their romantic relationship would be explicit in the movie and then it wasn't. If you watched it without knowing they were supposed to be lovers, I don't think you would have understood that from the film. So personally I think it was Queerbaiting because the marketing hinted there would be a focus on their relationship which there wasn't really in the film.

And yeah, it doesn't help that Anna and Britney had some much chemistry lol. They did a great job with their characters. I remember the first time I watch pitch perfect I didn't really expect anything relationship-wise but I was kind of shocked when Anna's character ended up with what's his face. They knew what they were doing with the two and intentionally wrote it so fans would keep their hopes up, only to be dashed away. That is the most cruel thing I can imagine. If they don't want to pull the trigger and just do it, then don't write or film scenes hinting at that. But studios will always choose marketing over the right thing to do.

    Really can't find anything to argue here. The Studio ... not the filmmakers, the STUDIO could have done a positive thing with this film, they could have given the fandom what it really wanted, but they chickened out. And, now, so much time has passed that there's no hope of any kind of continuation, so Pitch Perfect will remain a trilogy, and Bechloe will live only in fanfic, You Tube videos, and the hearts of the fans. Personally, I don't care what Universal claims is or isn't canon, #BechloeIsReal.

    I think the issue is fans shipping characters that defy the point of the story, and marketing teams exploiting this for a profit. Pitch Perfect is about gender, NOT sexuality so I think it's unfair to criticize the content of the films when it's the business executives and toxic fandom that's the issue. 99% of the time filmmakers have zero control over the marketing after all.

  • @t4ngy
    @t4ngy ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I genuinely think that the first movie didn't intend to queerbait at all, it's just showing a diverse group of girls in terms of personality (I know that the movie lacks representation, so I'm referring specifically to personalities) interacting with each other. Chloe is a very "girls girl", she's very feminine and cute, she probably grew up with a lot of girl friends, so she isn't bothered by being too close or intimate, she's also very affectionate. On the other hand, Becca is very closed off and is not used to having girl friends, so she is confused by Chloe's behavior a lot of times.
    I also think that the movie is about female friendship and that they should've kept it that way, without trying to purposefully insinuate any sexual tension between straight characters. They could've made them bisexual or gay, but I don't think they should've been a couple either way, because I feel like these movies are centered around friendship and not so much about romance, and them being a couple would've turned the story into a romance. The 3rd movie is terrible and should've never existed, they didn't need romantic subplots.

    Side rant: I never shipped Dean/Sam, but after seeing a few people talk about the ship, I'm more sympathic. When taken from the lens of emotional incest and examined with this phenomenon in mind, you can see how their (canonically destructive) codependence can be viewed as blurring the lines between family and romantic. Dean made his life around protecting Sam, leaving him little beyond that relationship. Add his natural flirtation, and he crosses the line sometimes in a way fans can see as canonically incestuous. Then when Cas comes into the mix, you can see how Dean has trouble distinguishing between possible romance and a brotherly bond because his actual brotherly bond isn't healthy. And people in universe do think he and Sam are a married couple sometimes. Both actors for Sam and Dean have said they had to fight the writers on some scenes because it was too romantic for brothers, so with what we got I can only imagine what was cut.
    I still don't ship it, but I can see how it wasn't pulled from nothing like I thought. I thought it was because fangirls gonna fangirl and there were only 2 characters to do that with until Cas showed up, but nah they have in world evidence.
