Jan in the Master. My son did his 'Level' revision listening to Focus Live at the Rainbow from 1973 and Mr Akkerman is still as peerless he was then. 'A guitarist's guitarist', as Brian May said.

Lucky to have seen Jan with Focus in 73 on the only US Tour they did & he's still a Master player 100% . Nice version though i prefered the one where he is sitting down & using his Gibson Super 400 , that guitar has so much tone it was perfect for this track . How lucky we guitar nuts are to have Jan all these years & still at the top of his game.

Afgelopen donderdag in Arnhem van Jan, zijn dochter en 4 goaarvrienden mogen genieten (lLe3ndert, Willem, John en Perry).
Als je nou naar Jan luisterd en je bedenkt dat hij lang gespeeld heeft met Hazes en je bedenkt hoe Andre deze melodielijn zou zingen. Dan hoor ik wel parallellen tussen de lijnen, nuances, verbuigingen die Jan met zijn gitaar en Andre met zijn stem maskt. Zou Jan dan meer door het Nederlandse levenslied zijn gevormd dan ik me ooit bedacht had?
En mss cerbeeldt ik t me allemaal wel.
Het blijft iig gewoon smaakvol en mooi.
Niet snelheid en techniek, maar smaak en muziek voorop.

Je verbeeld niets, hij is en blijft nog steeds heeeeel erg goed. Zag hem vaak live en luister nog steeds vaak naar zijn nummers. Luister ook eens naar zijn laatste album, van is van deze tijd !

Akkerman klinkt steeds beter en preciezer. Te groot voor NL, door andere groten bewonderd en terecht. Maar dacht nooit het grote geld verdiend.

The problem with having such recognisable signature phrases like Jan has - and kinda use them as 'party tricks' is that, once you know them, you can't but help but noticing them when he reuses them in subsequent solos. He's been reusing some phrases for nearly half a century and it grates slightly.....
Correct but not in this song
I have talked to Jan and various band members over the years and Jan's use of his 'stock licks' comes from the fact that he never plays anything the same twice and sometimes he goes off on a solo and loses where he is. So he uses the licks to find his way back. I agree with Danguee1 that as the years have gone by, he has become more reliant and I find the last 2 or 3 albums very difficult to listen to. But anyone that can release an album as good as 'Focus in Time' can be forgiven for anything. IMHO its one of the top 5 guitar albums of all time !

Gitaar geneuzel is het. Pink Floyd en Jan Akkerman kunnen geen pakkende, mooie liedjes schrijven, cq maken. Saai, saai , saai
