Theoretically yes? Factorio is just 0s and 1s, and Factorio can create and manipulate 0s and 1s the same way a computer does. Its just that to reverse engineer Factorio would take longer and need a larger team than the team the built Factorio (because you have to rebuild all of the layers that Factorio is built off of such as the OS, the programming language they made the game in, graphics engine, etc etc). Its possible, but it would be so complicated that it would be ridiculous. Its tantamount to asking whether you could build a computer from scratch with just a pickaxe. Yes possible, but there is so much work that would go into doing it that it would take multiple lifetimes (hence how long it took from the first human to the first computer). We all stand on the shoulders of those who came before us, and them before us, etc etc.
I think somebody said that if you made a javascript interpreter in Factorio, you could copy the Linux version of factorio into the interpreter in Factorio and then play Factorio in Factorio.
I think that would be an ultimate test of performance... maybe in a couple of years when factorio engine going to be close to perfection. You can do anything in Factorio, since combinators are Turing-complete. :D (Actually, I suspect it has multiple turing-complete subsystems, but I'm not a computer scientist (although I tried to become one once upon a time))
The circuit network amps up your game so much. You don't need to go nuts like this guy. Having production halt if something has reached a limit in the circuit network or check belt contents is an excellent start. Color coded barometers and signal lights in different colors spice up every production line. It is not that hard.
The power switches alone when properly used with the circuit networks is a huge power efficiency boost. Why have those assemblers/lifters abuse energy when not in use? =)
I was feeling great about myself because I figured out how to use a circuit network and filter inserters to build a vending machine (single item type but modular so it could be blueprinted and changed via constant combinator and changing the items the assemblers produce). I do very little military research and don't use grenades (I find them worthless against biter nests compared to the car's machine gun and I save as many trees as possible for a pollution buffer) so I can't justify a full production line for grenades and military science packs, so the vending machine will crank out just enough to throw into an assembler for the packs I need for what I want to research with no waste. It even has display lights for each phase (one phase per ingredient type plus manufacturing), a progress bar for the manufacturing phase, and thanks to a Red Alert sound pack I downloaded for the speakers you even get an audible "construction complete" at the end before it shuts the power to itself off to avoid unnecessary drain. Then I clicked on a Factorio video that turned out to be a rick roll. However, the rick roll was using a video display in Factorio itself. Even though it was 2 bit (light on/light off) it was enough to make me see that being proud of my vending machine is like a little kid boasting to a mathematician because he figured out how to add two and two. Then I saw this, a color display that does a lot with Factorio's limited pallet of color signals. Now my vending machine seems like a middle aged man proudly proclaiming to members of MENSA that he can count to five.
+Zach Sykes You could probably create one that is only designed to encode this kind of factorio video. It would be ridiculously efficient at that and couldn't do anything else.
