What a joy this was to hear Chris Schenkel broadcast a fight again. Chris Schenkel was as good a man as he was a broadcaster. I spoke to him by phone the day of the first bout between Matthew Franklin and John Conteh in Atlantic City. I was a high school kid, and in spite of that he gladly told me of announcing bouts in the '50s from St. Nicholas Arena in New York. ABC had the trifecta of Cosell, Schenkel and Jackson to call boxing, which they did all over the world.
Floyd Patterson - I would say what a class act but the thing is it doesn't seem like an act, just a genuinely classy guy - its a shame more athletes today don't follow his example
@김광숙 Not True Floyd refused to call Him Ali and that's why He was annoyed cos Floyd kept Calling Him Clay. But both were Greats of the Ring and great amb
These fights were all about Ingo's "Toonder and Lightening" as he called his right hand and whether Floyd could deal with it. These were great events. Ingo, for the year that he was champ, probably got more ink than any other sports figure. Those were very cool times.
While these two were jockeying the title back and forth with the title, Sonny Liston was the #1 contender for six years, Patterson finally gave in, even though his manager Cus dMato was totally against, but the media was wondering why Sonny hadn't yet been given a title shot. Cus dMato was saying Sonny was affiliated with the mob. SMDH. the era of the small HW would soon be over.
Patterson had TWO supreme accomplishments. He became the youngest ever to win the HW title and then the very 1st to regain the HW title. He was more of a light-heavy in terms of his size and if he chose to box at that weight he may have become the all-time greatest in that division. Patterson at one time had more 1 punch KOs (6) than any other HW in history. Patterson off these accomplishments might have to be considered in the all-time top 20 or so HWs.
I think Floyd's punching power was and has been overlooked by historians. Floyd employed many styles and was a smart fighter indeed, but also, Floyd was a banger from the inside and he paid the price for that in terms of knockdowns, k.o.'s ... Ingo looks like a very awkward opponent and think what he might have done.. had he the desire to train a la Floyd .. Floyd trained his entire life .
The Cruiserweight division didn't exist yet, but when I look back at these smaller heavyweights, it seems overdue. The creation of the Cruiserweight division didn't coincide with the existence of talented fighters of that size.
Chris Schenkel doing the commentary. As a kid, he was the guy who did bowling for ABC on Saturday's when I watched with my mom. Didn't realize he called heavyweight title fights and the NBA for ABC during his career until much older.
This video showed Floyd Patterson to be both an excellent athlete and a gentleman. His quick, coordinated moves throughout the fight showed him to be a fine athlete. His self-effacing and modest demeanor in his brief interview with Howard Cosell, and his going over to his opponent right after the fight to congratulate him for good competition showed him to be a gentleman. Admirable presentation all-around.
2 great fighters, both great guys giving it all they had.I want to mention the announcer, Chris Schenkell. I watched him announce just about everything from 1960-1995. The guy was smooth as glass, great voice, didnt talk too much like Howard Cosell, who was jealous of Chris. ABC really had a great crew in the 60s and 70s. RIP Chris, one of the greats.
These men fought all three fights with SIX OUNCE GLOVES! Can you imagine heavyweights like Tyson and Foreman using such light gloves (they fought with eight ounce gloves)?
5 weeks before this fight Johansson boxed a sparring session in Miami Beach against a young heavyweight with 3 pro fights under his belt. The young boxer embarrassed Johansson and boxed his ears off. His name was Cassius Clay.
Thank you Darin, that's a nice compliment.....I had the honor of meeting Bert Sugar in 1983 and he was a very intelligent, wise and funny man who exuded class and grace throughout a marvelous career
Those classic patterson hooks that so often found the back of the head on the base of the skull are brain rearrangers. Ingemar was one tuff mamma jamma though especially having ribs broken near the end of round 4 and still banging away.
I loved Floyd. He was a great fighter. Actually a beefed up middleweight. Really should have been one of the greatest middleweight/cruiserweight champions of all time. In this fight Ingo got a quick count and if Ingo had been in shape he would have regained the title. Also Ingo would have given Liston a much tougher fight than Floyd because styles make fights and Ingo's big punch would have hurt Sonny. Though in the end Sonny would have prevailed, just like in the Cleveland Williams fights.
You lost all credibility claiming Ingo would have given Liston a harder time. Patterson could move and had a peekabo style and a faster better jab than ingo. Ingo had to catch you coming in or if you were off balence falling back to hurt you. Liston had a far harder jab and far more power. Ingo couldn't jab like he did with Liston or it would be lights out. Liston didn't miss much with his hook. You would not have a Liston Williams fight you would have a Foreman Frazier 1 fight with far less knockdowns maybe three before the fight ended. There was a reason Ingo didn't fight Agressive real hitters. Like Joe Frazier ingo had good handlers who knew who not to fight. Frazier had no choice in fighting George thus the slaughter.
@@tralfazruk1 Saying Ingo would give Liston a harder time is like saying a Labrador would give a bear a harder time than a cat like it’s a badge of honor.
@@The_Honcho I guess your agreeing with me. My point was Ingo was protected like Frazier. His manager knew his fighters limitations and set Ingo up to succeed. Ingo wisely retired and didn't look back and rejected some good money to come back.
Floyd’s younger brother Raymond passed away on July 29th this year. He was also a heavyweight boxer and managed to knock down Sonny Liston during a sparring session at Redbergslids boxningsklubb i Gothenburg. When Liston lived in Sweden for a period.
I would also like to add that Floyd would have given a better account of himself against Liston if he had stayed away and boxed instead of walking right into him. And why he made exactly the same mistake the second time is beyond me. In any case Liston again would still have won, it just would have taken him longer.
You can hear in Patterson's voice during that interview with Costello that he KNEW Liston was gonna kick his butt...he was scared of Liston and it showed in the 2 fights....
Meh that'd just be delaying the inevitable, plus Liston's piston jab would still provide major problems for Floyd if he tried to outbox, being that he was giving up a foot of reach.
Floyd didn't look satisfied with that KO, looks like he wanted to knock him out in more impressive fashion, because Ingemar could've beaten the count. Ingemar probably knew a repeat of the 2nd fight was coming and didn't want to get knocked completely unconscious again so he just didn't get up.
They were NOT knockOUTS!! They were knockDOWNS. HUGE difference. Tell me, when and where have you EVER seen a guy get knocked out twice in the same fight, much less the same round????

For all you young peeps out there who think racism is the end all be all, I give you the BROWN BOMBER JOE LOUIS. we have come such a long way. Appriciate it or we lose our country. We all are nowEqual under the law thanks to athletes like these champions. Black and white
Must have been very frustrating for Ingmar, he landed some good solid punches but Floyd refused to go down. The required 8-count rule was one of the best things in boxing, it saved the sport.
Cus DamAtto. Name should ring a bell. He is the man who made mike Tyson the undisputed heavyweight champ. Floyd was youngest champ until Tyson became champ
While neither fighter would be consider an ATG I think they are probably second only to Ali and Frazier when it comes to rivalry in the heavyweight division.
I have to agree Leo ... they were both awkward and smart boxers who loved to air it out ... Ingo's right was so quick and fast that you can tell Floyd didn't see it ... And Floyd was a banger... just watch his fights ... he moved forward and took the punishment and more often than not .. connected with his lightning left hook. Great styles make great fights ... per angelo dundee... Angie was correct
My understanding of Rocky was that he worked to overcome a simple speech pattern and that, in fact, he was an articulate dinner speaker after his boxing retirement . I like that he opened the interview with "hiya!" .... I understand he was liked by everyone who came to know him.
At that point, it might have been Cassius Clay. Someone earlier said that Clay boxed the ears off of Ingo in a sparring session in Miama. Clay was taller and faster than Liston, and, even back then, his jab could tear your face off. Listen found out, maybe during the 2nd round of the first fight, that he was screwed. Epic!
has Johansson ever heard of a feint, uppercut or bodypunch. All he does is jab , and looks to land a straight right to the chin . If he threw an accassional feint off the jab and a accassional right to the body and or threw a right uppercut when patterson got inside, it would have made a big difference.

I was a kid during this fight and I was hoping for Ingo. But over some 60 years, I got to appreciate and love Floyd Patterson. What a class act.
I hoped for Patterson instead, Ingo was kind of a b when he mocked Patterson on interviews after beating him
