It's common to have a trash can in the kitchen here too. The disposal is used more for really small stuff. There is a lot that you shouldn't put down the drain for obvious reasons, but the disposal just makes it a little safer to put food scraps down the drain without damaging your drain. That also saves some trash bags in the long run.

(at least not if you have half a brain) I'd say about 3/4ths of the kitchens I've lived in (all US) have one, and they are NOT meant for whole food bits like apples and stalks of celery. Most folks I know use them for fruit/ veggie peels but we had an issue with ours once and the plumber was warning us they are really only intended for missed plate scrapings, and making sure dish water won't clog your drains.

Hey Nate and Calli. I would like you to revisit this. The Mythbusters used simdavers a few times a whole one would cost too much. Could you try looking for simdaver pieces like elbow to fingers. I think that would educate people better than using food.
Small amounts of mercury would probably be fine. It is technicly not harmful to your body, but i would be concered about your digestion concidering how heavy it is. And also i would be concerned if it got into your blood somehow.
