One drummer that was not mention is Billy Cobham . The Japanese sign him to represent the Tama as their spokesman . Just saying .Did Freddy Hubbard have any topnotch drummers in his bands ? Freddy Hubbard Blue Note Era was also very good . Many thanks for Part 1 and 2 , it was all great

What a fabulous presentation. Minute 34: "A drummer can make or break a band". That is so true. I saw a very mediocre jazz group years ago, that had a wonderful drummer....that made the group sound unified. He was, by far the superior musician on the stage.

i hate typing too much so ... more briefly ... i stopped into a bar in Newport, RI. A reggae band was playing. people sitting around chillin. band took a break. returned with another drummer. all of a sudden this energy started building. finally we were all on the floor for " Get up, Stand up. " i always believe it was the drummer that turned that band around.

I’d give both of my right arms for that yellow Square Badge Gretsch kit that Elvin used to play in the 70s. But I guess it would defeat the purpose to so. I’ve always loved that kit.
Anyway, amazing and very inspiring post. My big takeaway: Connie Kay. His comping is really unbelievable and I will definitely be checking out more of that.

Zach Barnhart! I love that drum set too. Like Tony Williams' drums but with a smaller bass drum and tuned higher. The yellow color is what's so amazing about those drums. I've always thought (to myself) if you play drums with a flashy finish, you better play well....that's why I play drums with with a stain finish. LOL.

These guys are all great, but Elvin Jones was a game changer. Big time.
I was lucky to catch him live and he gave me a whole new perspective. He influenced so many drummers and not just in jazz.
Tony Williams was another one. They took drumming to another level.
There's the greats, then there's Elvin Jones and Tony Williams.
Just my take on things based on a lifetime playing drums.
    Feel free to disagree.

It was not possible to include all the drummers in the credits list, but no mention of Danny Richmond, who played for many years with Charles Mingus. Look at Mingus videos if you don't know him, ( "All the things you are," especially ) and you will see why he should get a mention.
