Forty years ago, I was working in the tower at RAF Sculthorpe when the telephone rang. "Sculthorpe" "Good morning, Sculthorpe! This is RAF Marham. Are you working an aircraft about ten miles nw of you?" It turned out that we were. Our GCA had vectored a C-130 over Sandringham. This was frowned upon, but fortunately, nobody was in residence at the time.
^^^ A lot of people don't know this, but, the 2nd highest scoring pilot (Ex-Lufwaffe) served here during the mid 1960's He actually qualified as an RAF pilot back in 1956 & gained his 'RAF Wings' & the ceremony was filmed (razor sharp) "Match of the Day" original commentator almost died, before crash landing his 107 Sqdn Blenheim @ West Raynham^^ ^^ althought West Raynham was NOT his home base, but his gunner was killed & had his head blown in two I live down the road & almost bought a house near the main gate.
I'm glad there are still a few buildings remaining. The sad fact is though, that unless they are listed, and with a definite future purpose, they will all probably be demolished at some point soon.
Thanks Mark for the updated Video, Spent five years there in the eighties, Even then much of it was unused, I believe a lot of the missile site has gone.
Thank you Mark. Would love to visit and explore. The buildings look iconic, so much history and atmosphere at this site.
