On some days the referee will say they can’t give a silly penalty like this. It’s about following the spirit rather than the letter of the law. On others, it will be I need to give the penalty because it is the rule book. Blame the rules, not me. We need to apply the rules according to the rulebook to be fair. In layman terms, it just means referees have excuses for every single mistake possible.

The ref overlooked the 1st one because it wasn't a handball that stopped a potential goal. BUT the rules are there for a reason and shouldn't be flaunted just because of sympathy.
