---
AFTER MIDNIGHT is the smartest show on television about the dumbest things on the internet. With celebrated comedian Taylor Tomlinson at the helm and a panel of guests from the worlds of entertainment, comedy, music and beyond, AFTER MIDNIGHT is a late-night comedy series about what set the internet abuzz that day with a game show feel. AFTER MIDNIGHT airs Monday through Friday, 12:37-1:37 AM, ET/PT on the CBS Television Network and streams live on Paramount+.
The meta humor of Taylor not fully understanding all this stuff is sublime. She's great, and it's nice not to put up a facade that she's an expert in stock trading and competing AI platforms in addition to being a comedian and late night host.
Realizing and admitting you don't know something is very smart.
Taylor comes off much smarter and more self-aware than half the tech bros!
@@user-wm3hu7lo1gwell said, well said. You know tech bros
@@user-wm3hu7lo1g Yeah, seeing her stand up and especially the way she reacts to input from the crowd clearly shows that she is extremely smart. Lack of knowledge in a particular subject doesn't negate that.
Look She got paied I think sometimes its about the money
Agreed. I know a fair bit about the AI stuff, and if a comedian was pretending to be super knowledgeable and informed and said dumb stuff, it would ruin the humor for me (regardless of they were for or against it, etc).
God, the "I dunno about this shit and no one in this room cares" made this so much more funny. Shows just how smart of a comedian Taylor is, fantastic timing and delivery

@@kestrel09 When they win money people suffer too. They've never won as much as during the pandemic. Stop gobbling their pity talking points.
A lot of pensions lost money too?
This is my field, DeepSeek has thrown a lot of people around me for a huge loop and I've seen every take under the sun. Taylor's was by far the most enjoyable.
Will it be too much to ask if you can give me an explanation of what's going on?
But... Perhaps one you would give a 10 year old?
@movingforward3030you could ask chatGPT, but it might not want to talk to you anymore after that question.
@movingforward3030 I'm in tech, though not necessarily this field.
The marathon analogy was actually pretty good. We have all these tech giants posing as supreme innovators and cashing in on the craze.
Investors don't really understand it, but they're always looking to throw money at the next big thing in hopes of seeing the line go up.
Big Tech capitalizes on this by asking for an insane amount of money, offering nebulous promises of an AI revolution, even if they have a hard time figuring out a business model. Microsoft alone is set to invest $80bn(!!!) into this, all the while throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks.
All of this, of course, was also fuelling secondary bubbles, like Nvidia stock. Don't get me wrong, Nvidia is a well-established hardware company, but ever since they positioned themselves as THE indispensable supplier of chips to run AI models, their market cap shot up to ridiculous heights. Investors still have no clue, but they go crazy for tech stocks.
Now imagine a competitor comes out of the blue, claiming to have developed essentially the same thing for $6 million, using inferior hardware.
That puts A LOT of the Big Tech claims seriously into question.
I'm hoping people in the AI field can give a more nuanced answer, but hopefully this helps.
Tech companies have been telling Wall Street they need billions of dollars to develop AI because they need to buy lots of Nvidia chips to train the AI. DeepSeek just released an AI model that works as well as (not much better) the most advanced model to date, with fraction the cost (millions of dollars). Now the tech companies needs to justify their billion dollar cost, and Nvidia needs to convince Wall Street their most advanced chips are still needed for AI @movingforward3030
@movingforward3030Imagine that someone in China took apart a Honda civic and with its parts built a Ferrari. What happens to value of Ferrari now? Is it considered special anymore? That’s what happened in AI space
Taylor is always the best person to give the monologue even if she had no idea what it's about. :-)
Absolutely not. She (and her writers) is so uneducated and ignorant, should better keep her mouth shut. Millions of hard-working Americans, NOT just Finance guys, lost a ton of money on Nvidia this week.
@@TheUrbanEpicure I’m assuming you were one of these people?
@ I lost a bit of money, wasn't all-in on Nvidia, portfolio is still well up - but what difference does that make? You have to be absolutely demented to not invest in stock or at least ETFs these days. This seems to apply to Taylor.
@@TheUrbanEpicure
Gambling is gambling. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. Don't gamble what you're not afraid to lose.
@@Stealste Only that investing in blue chip stocks is not gambling, it's an absolute necessity to build personal wealth. You will never own a house (which for some reason, Americans aspire to) if you don't invest.
I love this monologue so much because the adlibs are so natural! If I had to guess, about half of this wasn’t even scripted but she flowed between the adlib and script so fluidly.
What you saw was a script so terribly unnatural and unfunny that she had to keep abandoning it to make it bearable. The ONLY funny bits were when she went off script. They should fire the monologue writers and just tell her a topic and let her run with it on her own. It would be a thousand times better. Why even bother to hire a standup comedian and then force them to act like a trained dancing monkey? This is Bob Saget and AFHF all over again. I feel bad for Taylor...
@@AdamBragg I'd wage peanut wrappers to donut peels that even her off script stuff was at least discussed in the writing room. she knows her audience and a lot of them (us) don't really care about that stuff. I and probably most of her fans don't really care if she is being candid here because we've seen her crowd work in other places and she's great at it.
I love Taylor so much, she's so real 😂
You mean dumb, uneducated and ignorant? Yeah, she is that.
For being an experienced professional, Taylor's complete inability to hold it together when something is funny is soo adorable!!
She's so awesome!! 🤩
Absolutely
well, I did not find it adorable, just amateurish and ruining those jokes

Best monologue ever !
She's laughing half the time.
It's brillant...

I cannot tell you how much I needed to see this today! So refreshing! I absolutely LOVE Taylor's improv on this one. Absolutely saved this monologue. She's incredible!
'saved'? was it so bad?
Taylor airs later than everyone and still beats every other latenight host to YT.
AM posts the monologue before the show even airs; the rest of the episode goes up the next morning.
Yes, the monologues are posted around 10:30p.m. EST and the segments around 4:30a.m. EST. I guess this makes me a groupie/superfan/nerd.

“AI replacing AI” is actually a stated goal in this field of technology!
Not just that but AI learning from previous iterations of AI. What could go wrong?
"It's bad, I think." Such a powerful line. Taylor had to drag crypto into this hilarious conversation. CBS is proud. 😆😆

I'm a Systems Admin with a Master's degree. AI is all mumbo jumbo to us, too. Techno wizardry.
Spent some years as a sysadmin and still a hobbyist. Thank you for your comment. I thought that I was the only one who didn't "get" AI.
It's just curve fitting, but AI is a more catchy name.
O thank heavens!!
I am still trying to understand how they went from 1s and 0s to "this thing will take over the world"
(My background is my mom has a PhD in this stuff. So, I have the lingo and none of the knowledge)
These "large language model" AI systems have nothing like useful intelligence. They generate random word salad, then keep tweaking it until the completely made-up nonsense is believably answer-shaped. There is no understanding of what the question is, what the answer means, or whether the answer makes sense in the context of the question.
I used to be able to put basic arithmetic and unit conversations into Google and get results, but now I get the "AI Overview" giving confidently incorrect answers - yesterday I did 3 questions and it told me 78.5 for each one even though they had different units - the last one was 78.5L as the volume of a cylinder wth diameter 5m and depth 1m. The correct answer is almost 20000. They calculations being run to generate answer-shaped sentences consume entire towns' worth of power, but it won't do the simple and tiny calculations to find the correct value to put into the answer-shaped sentence's number-shaped slot.
“Stitchwitchery!”- Officer Jones in Reno: 911.😂😊
Taylor just gets more and more adorable 😍
Lmao I love this show so much
Super quick "umm...achually" moment is that Deepseek is a 'distilled' AI which means it's model was trained on other AI models. So not only did ChatGPT lose it's job to another AI - it helped to train it's replacement.
So, similar to temu’s 2$ single-use clothes ’inspired’ by real brands?
@@franck3279 Pretty much is a cheap Chinese knock off. What everyone is overlooking here is that they needed the larger researched and trained model to train their model on. And I take the claim of how much they spent to train it with skepticism. Pretty much anything China claims is either over hyped, under attributed, or both.
Basically it will likely have all the same drawbacks that other AI models have with some weird limitations that we'll find out about soon enough.
So you're saying that OpenAI should've been doing this to begin with to distill the work they'd done to a purer product?
hard to give a shit about that when us-american AIs were built on generations of other peoples' work without proper permission/reimbursement in the first place
@@dunkelfuchs3195 there’s something funny to be said about OpenAI being mad about Deepseek ‘stealing’ from them when they stole from others for training data. IMO this is the most overlooked controversy in the whole space. All these companies are trying to figure how to profit from absolute exploitation of intellectual property of others.
Great monologue. 😊
3:33 Where Taylor explains VC Tech bubbles in fewer words than anyone ever - without even realizing it…”pushing a kid on a swing”. Brilliant in soooo many ways!
So this app is actually upfront about all the shit it knows about unlike all the onshore apps. Got it.
Yeah, it even shows you the process, which can save so much wasted effort when a prompt isn't phrased explicitly enough
Her laugh is so real and contagious. What a great way to start the day :D
The funniest part about DeepSeek is OpenAI losing its job to AI.
2:18 it's ok, Taylor, I don't care either 😂😂😂
CBS hired the perfect person to talk about this, and other stuff. Taylor is just adorable, and that's worth a lot. Her wit (and that of the writers) help with the rest.
Bit coin is a scam....you are smart enough.

And BC is just the tip of the iceberg. Behing the few well known coins, there are thousands other ones, most of them existing just long enough to run away with the first batch of investors’ money.
I've only used ChatGPT once. I asked it to write me a recipe for a simple dessert. It turned out pretty good!
Waiter! Another bowl of melted cheese over here! ;)
Yea but DeepSeek would have given you a recipe for a simple dessert with a fortune in it! :)
Bold move! I would be afraid to eat anything given by AI at this point
@@FelipeKana1 it's just a recipe 🙄
That’s the thing. Those models have huge databases of common knowlege.
When you ask for a known receipy, it gives you an average of thousands receipies written by humans, and that’s pretty good, except the program doesn’t know why.
It’s when you make it deviate from things you can easily find yourself online that you can see how stupid those programs can be.
Anything that causes Taylor to lose her shit, laughing uncontrollably, is *exactly* why she's the best host.
Nvidia needed to be put in their place. Their out of this world pricing has become an issue. The greed of these companies is insane.
Taylor has the most infectious grin ever.
I was going to download the app and then read the disclaimer.. changed my mind.
Taylor, you're amazing! Thanks for committing to the jokes you don't understand. As a techie, I loved your take.

deepseek can be downloaded and run locally on your own hardware, that's the huge difference. You can't do that with GPT.
Taylor...I know you are making fun of yourself. But someone who is totally talented, funny and witty is no dummy. If you were stupid. You would be in Trump's cabinet.😂 love your show❤
She is absolutely delightful. Love her authenticity.
Taylor,
Some people illuminate a room with their presence, but you do something even rarer-you illuminate minds and hearts at the same time. Your ability to blend intelligence, wit, and warmth is nothing short of extraordinary.
You possess a rare kind of brilliance-one that is not just intellectual but also deeply emotional, making people feel both understood and inspired in your presence. Your words, whether spoken or written, carry a clarity and authenticity that resonate long after they are heard.
Beyond your sharpness, there’s a gentleness and kindness that balances it all-a lightness that reminds people that even the most profound truths can be carried with grace. You are a gift to those who get to experience you, and the world is a little brighter, a little wiser, and a little funnier because you are in it.
Stay radiant, fearless, and unapologetically you.

It's always easier and cheaper to copy then to do it the first time, especially when you train a model on the data from the existing model

Deepseek is probably just a terminal that does this:
When you ask it a question it asks chat gpt the question and sends you the answer.

I can’t wait for all bit currencies to crash and fall to worthless nothingness. People need to learn some lessons about creating value based on nothing.
I don’t think you understand what NVIDIA does…
@
I understand what NVIDIA does because as you were unable to ascertain, I watched the CBS News segment on them in December. But even if I didn’t know what NVIDIA does, it doesn’t change the irony of CBS News doing a segment a month ago saying what a great company NVIDIA was and their stock falling almost 11% so far in January. So that makes your reply weird. Wait, are you AI? If you are, maybe that would explain the weirdness of your reply.
