      It’s an authentic Western Pacific Whistle that was on her sister 164! And so it’s an authentic sound!! It exudes true power behind every pull!

    Thats me and my son climbing into the cab at 8:20! So my father was the store keeper at Portola from 1921 to 1942. I'm pretty sure my father rode in 165 many times. A circle of life moment for you to catch me and my son checking off a bucket list item!

    There’s been 25-35 steam back to restored operations in the last couple of years. When challenger is back as well as 5011. Man we no longer have to wish we lived to see these things run we are bringing them all back one by one

      Well she’s been in rebuild since I believe 2006 so it was a long time coming! It was a treat to see her strutting her stuff!

    Absolutely amazing I had no idea they had this locomotive rebuilt and ready 😮 i’ve been to this museum only once out of my 42 years I’ve lived in the area, I’m only two hours away I need to seriously get back up there this spring 👍 thanks for sharing I’m really digging your channel you need more subscribers my friend don’t hold back keep up the great Content 😃

    Honestly, I didn’t even know there were any WP steam engines left. Most of the ones I’ve seen preserved in CA are CP/SP, V&T, and the like. Nice to see a WP in preservation, let alone operational.

By the way I was wondering if you live near the Bakersfield area or did you travel to go to the Bakersfield train show? I live in the area and besides my parents I have no other train friends.

      Well 94 was last run in 1986 so this is the first run of steam for WP in the 21st century and I was happy to be able to witness history!

    Does anyone know if 165 will receive boiler jacketing? I reckon it will considering how stark the iron red is compared to the shiny black of the cab and tender. Great video!

    That whistle sounds pretty good but it sounds a bit raspy/airy like not all of the notes are ringing out quite as well as they could.

      It may in fact be I don't know unfortunately. However, I am a fan of it due to it being a genuine WP whistle from its sister 164.

      They had issues kinda similar with Sierra 3 and had her whistle rebuilt. Could even be just in need of some tinkering and adjustments before needing actual machine work too.

      @@rudycarlson8245 to the best of my knowledge, she was originally a coal burner but in modern California, steam locomotives have to be oil burners regardless!

      @@WIPEOUT_Trains Oil use is not a modern environmental requirement. The WP burned oil on all locomotives on its western division, coal on the eastern. Coal east of Winnemucca and oil to the west. The reason involved fuel-supply chains. By the end of steam on the WP, pretty-much everything had been converted to oil as it was easier to ship, handle, and it eliminated coal processing, ash disposal, and related maintenance.
