It's totally understandable that one would mishear 違く (chigaku, different) as 近く (chikaku, similar), not only because they sound similar, but because the former is technically ungrammatical (conjugating the noun 違い as if it were an adjectival verb), albeit very common in modern colloquial Japanese. So... I guess their sloppy usage of words is to blame? :p
