I daily drove my 68 1602 for about four years, while restoring it. The BMW parts department prides itself in supplying almost every part of your car. That would be your best source for certain parts, like brakes, trim pieces, rubber bushings. The strut tower bearings need replacing, before they start banging dents in the hood. Check the top shock mounts in the trunk, they get rusted out. Mine had the factory manuel in the glovebox, it said that one quart of oil consumption per 500 miles is normal. The 1602 has standard locking rear diff. The geebo coupler that plays the part of a U-joint between the transmission and driveline is a must. Don't remove the fenders, or doors. I kept mine stock, I repainted it Alpine White, a BMW gen one M-3 color, I did lower the ride height with a set of progressive rate springs, 195/50/15 Yoko 008's and some chrome lip gold mesh BBS rims, and upraded the brake calipers, and used steel braided brake lines, this improved pedal feel a ton. I hope to see more videos! Nice car!

Thanks for this series of videos, Nathan! I had a 1967 1600 (6 volt!) that I bought in 1972 and drove daily until about 1985. Pulled the engine for a rebuild with a rented engine hoist in my apartment building's car port (the manager didn't realize until I was putting it all back in!). OMG what a blast that car was to drive on the very twisty mountain and coastal roads in CA (all 2nd and 3rd gear speeds). Just enough power, but you had to DRIVE that car, selecting the right gear and timing things right... major fun! I learned so much by working on that simple little car myself - valve adjustment, points and checking the dwell, brake jobs, replacing struts with Bilsteins, etc. The 6-volt system (8 fuses, ha ha!) meant some pretty dim taillights and brake lights, and that started to worry me in traffic... Ended up in my garage for years, then sold it in the early 90s - the guy came almost 400 miles from LA with a trailer so I knew it was going to a good home. Anyway, so glad you are working on this project - enjoy the simplicity! Now I drive an E34 - 1995 525i stick, that's pretty fun, too and relatively simple.

I've got a few spares for this car, mainly drive train stuff, NOS engine pistons first size over, I got the early rare Porsche NOS synchronizers for 1st, and 2nd gear, various gear box parts, rear rebuilt axle shafts new U joints, but the boots on the rear CV joints have since dried out, they are the old clear type boots for the sliders new black boots are like $12.00, couple long neck rear ends, drive shaft, rebuilt 1600 cylinder head with 275 cam, original 1600 block, head, pistons, rods, crank, oil pump, etc. I rebuilt the CV's with new needle bearings, and U joints from BMW years ago. Sadly my 68 1600 was totaled years ago, but I've kept a lot of parts from this car. I'd would leave the front fenders on if you can, they are leaded onto the radiator support. If your looking for something inquire probably have it if it's not sheet metal, I only saved one drivers side door and one passenger side fender. Uber rare to find a 1600 in that shape right now 99% are rusted out beyond reasonable repair. I replace my 1600 with 71 2002 that was parked in 1978 after the owner over head the engine only 89k original on it, installed a rebuilt Ti spec motor in it 74 block with 73 121 head, 44mm Mikunis, I've been sitting on this car for few years now until we move to our new home, a place were your neighbors won't complain about you working on them. Curious where you found the car?

One of my friends had one of these. Very wide gear spacing. Great little car on the highway. But once one drove a 2002 or especially a 2002tii, they made more sense in America.

Cut?? You probably have to take the fenders and front off as a complete unit with some help.

There should be a lugwrench that has a hinged hook that helps remove the hubcaps. Note that the early 2002s have unique suspension bushings and single circuit brakes. system. 200 vs 230mm. Etc etc.. good luck!!

I believe wheel cylinder is the name of the part on drum brakes you were looking for. It's been quite a while since I worked on drum brakes.

I had a friend whose parents ran a 1602 and it was a fun car to drive for the time. Even back in the late '60's he regretted it was not a 2002 !

Excited to see you working on this model! I have a 71 2002 I’m hoping to start restoring soon. I’m so curious where your car came from as I was so close to pulling the trigger on an identical car in Springfield, IL last January. If this is the same car, congrats as it was an absolute steal of a price!

I wouldn’t worry about parts too much. The only difference between this and a 2002 is engine internals. You can even use some E21 parts.

Lovely video and excellent restoration! How would you describe the 1600-2 as an everyday car? Is it a reliable runner or is it one of those car you'd expect to breakdown every now and then? I'm thinking about getting one myself. I look forward to your answer. Thanks and take care 😊

This car needs some serious love. But I do remember getting pulled over by a DPS trooper for going 75 mph, but he thought it was a Renault and knew "it could not go that fast." Got a warning.
Loved the late '60s when every one of the few BMW owners back then would flash their headlights to greet each other on the highways.

This is a sweet car for home restore on a budget. The bones of the car look good. It reminds me of my 79' E12 528i that I purchased, instead of the 2002 that needed way too much work. This is going to be good following the build.

Have a look at other videos. A few ad on s and wheels paint jobs and you will rethink.
Take the turbo or tii for a spin . So it's the 2002 but it's heaven. The stock m10 motor was used in formula 1 with some RAD and it produced insane HP. Just Google .
Fall off your chair ! It's never too late
