    I collect Tolkien, but I don't go nuts for first editions or rare prints. Just buy what I find aesthetically pleasing or very interesting. Result: no stress and feel happy everytime I walk past my collection 😎

      This is the same as me! I adore Alan Lee and John Howe’s art so I tend to just collect the newer hardback and paperback editions with their cover art 😂

      A very wise move and indeed an excellent suggestion to all current and aspiring collectors 🙂

    When you are researching your collection, make sure that you are getting good advice. As a moderator on the Tolkien Collector's Guide, it is a very good place to start. Have a look at the Calendar of Upcoming Events such as new Book Releases and the Store, which shows Tolkien Books currently in print.

    Always look forward to a new posting of yours James. Thank you as always for taking the time to record and edit them. Your advice also works in any kind of collection, books or otherwise, and your 6 tips is a great starting point to get the new collector off on a good foundation.

    Patience is indeed a good tip. I waited and the Deluxe slipcase for silmarillion was on sale for 30 euros. As well as that, the same style deluxe edition of children of hurin was 20 euros off of the usual price (usually around 70-90, so now only 50!)
    And sunlight and humidity indeed really suck....

    Instead of watching ROP last year I decided to reread LOTR. It had been decades since reading them but I wanted to start out where I began. I found the new set of cheap mass paperbacks. They looked different than the mass paperbacks I had as a kid but still reminded me of them. I didn’t want to worry about beating them up as I read them.
    However I can see myself upgrading my collection. It’s been fun re-reading these classics.

    Great video, a sort of Master Class for the collectors 🙂 All the important notes are mentioned. Can you imagine me nodding every time another point has been sounded?
    There is another point every serious collector comes to (at some point): "what is going to happen to the collection after I am gone?"

      @@brewingbooks (responding from another account of mine) In case if family shares your passion ;-) Not in my case, I tend to believe (neither of my collections). On the other hand, when collectors collect what they truly love, at some point they may realize the material lives within their hearts and will always stay there. So, material possession becomes secondary side of that Passion, to which they can say "Goodbye" at any given moment. Thank you for keeping up this idea! ;-)

    That’s the same edition of The Silmarillion that I have (the one in the thumbnail). I’m not actually a «book collector» but I also have the first edition with the fold-out map of Beleriand. My most prized book.

    • @brewingbooks

      The paperback set with the John Howe illustrations on the front covers are quite the standard issue and great for reading 🙂

      @Brewing Books oh awesome, do they have a set with all 12 books? I have been struggling to find it

    • @brewingbooks
      @brewingbooks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PhatYeti I’m not aware of a complete paperback set (they’re usually bought individually), but there are hardback sets (or a three volume set with all the works compiled together but it’s very impractical to read) 😅

    • @PhatYeti
      @PhatYeti ปีที่แล้ว

      @Brewing Books hahaa ya I saw that's probably a pain to read! I'll check them our individually thanks so much! I was confused for a bit since I saw there was a 1-5 set realesed in 2002 but not the rest lol

  • @iamrubenmes

    Would you know of a place I can keep track of all the upcoming Tolkien publications?
    Also, I'm considering which HoMe to get. I am currently collecting the standard illustrated hardback editions, and want my HoMe to fit. So far, I feel neither the black 3-volume sets, nor the new release with the Sil and UT are exactly what I want. Both could work, but neither are my first choice. The new set does not have illustrations and has a lower quality than the standard illustrated hardbacks, right? I.e. thinner paper, worse binding, no coloured chapter names at the top, etc.
    Looking forward to your reply.

    • @brewingbooks
      @brewingbooks  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for your questions. For the History of Middle-earth, there are no editions with illustrations that I’m aware of. The three-volume set is not really practical for reading. I found the paperback editions (with the John Howe front covers) the best for reading.
      To keep up to date on new publications, you might want to follow the official JRR Tolkien Facebook page 🙂

      @@brewingbooks Hi James, nice to meet you. Thank you for your reply. It's so nice to interact with you and share thoughts with you. So, the new boxed sets are not illustrated, as I guessed. How do you like the feel of the quality, and how does it compare the illustrated LOTR+Hobbit boxed set? I am aware that you personally like the paperbacks of HoMe, and I agree that with readability, these are the best (also for LOTR, especially when reading to others). However, I am loathe to invest in them when there are other options available. II would like to hear your reflections on this: f you would go back to when you started out, what would you have done in hindsight?
      And thank you, I am now following the official page of JRR Tolkien on Facebook. That, and the Tolkien Collector's Guide, are immensely helpful. Enjoy the rest of your day and may we meet again.
