- Join us in this episode of Guftagoo with the renowned film actor - Prem Chopra. He used to play the roles of the anti-hero (villain) initially and later transited into playing the roles of character artistes with aplomb. He has acted in over 400 films in Hindi and Punjabi cinema.
Chopra was born in a Punjabi Hindu family in Lahore on September 23, 1935 to Ranbirlal and Rooprani Chopra. He graduated from Punjab University. Chopra is married to Raj Kapoor's wife's sister Uma.
Prem Chopra is best known for his rendition of the lines "Prem naam hai mera.. Prem Chopra". He had a mass following inspite of playing villain roles. later on he has played many memorable roles of a comedian.
He has won several awards like the "Lifetime Achievement Award"; "Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini Award"; "Lions Club Award"; "Ashoka Award", "Ashirwad Award" and the "Punjabi Kala Sangam Award."

A legend- from his roles in Nasir Hussain's Teesri Manzil (1966), Do Raaste (1969) & Shakti Samanta's Kati Patang (1970), Raj Kapoor's Bobby (1973), Yash Chopra's Daag (1973) even films later on like Raj Khosla's Dostana (1980) with Angry Young Man Amitabh Bachchan & Manmohan Desai's Naseeb (1981). Prem Chopra is indeed a very chilled out individual. In my younger days I found his phone number from an internet site. I called him just to say how much of a fan I was and cited his dialogue from Saamri “mama taqleefchand”. He was very happy to hear that characters’ name and said he heard about it after ages. He did not know me....he had nothing to gain out of me but just the greetings of a fan, is what I could give. But he was such a gentleman and a cordial individual that I was became an even bigger fan. Hats off to the legend!!!

प्रेंम नाम बहुत प्यारा हैं और बहुत से मां बाप अपने बच्चों के नाम प्रेंम या प्रेंमांशू रखते हैं। कहते हैं कि प्राण साहब की अदाकारी देखकर किसी मां बाप ने अपने बच्चों का नाम प्राण नहीं रखा। कहते हैं एक बार किसी होटल में हड़कंप मच गया और लड़कियां सैंड़ल लेकर तैंयार हो गई मारने को। राम और श्याम में दिलिप साहब कांपने लग जाते हंटर देखकर। विलेंन को देखकर खौंफ अलग बात हैं । लड़कियों को छेड़ना अलग बात हैं प्रेंम नाम हैं मेरा पर हाल में तालीयां भय के कारण नहीं लफंगा मवाली मजनूगिरी के कारण पड़ी। कोई लड़की की सुन्दरता पर उसे छेड़े यह लड़कीयां चाहती हैं परंतु हर कोई छेड़े यह नहीं चाहती। मोहे पनघट पर नंदलाल छेड़ गयों रे ...छेड़ेगें गली के सब लड़के में अंतर हैं। लड़के को लड़कीयां भी छेड़ती हैं परंतु ऐसा फिल्मों में कम देखने को मिलता हैं। कुछ फिल्मों में अनिल कपूर को लड़कियों ने छेड़ा हैं और वह शर्म से लाल हो गये। डर और प्रेंम का एक साथ होना हास्यापद हैं। पोथी पड़ीजगभया पड़ीत भया ना कोई ढ़ाई आखर प्रेम का पढ़े सो पढ़ीत होए। कुछ मुवींज में डर से पायजामा गिला होना या सूसू होना दिखाया जाता हैं। डर तो सभी को लगता हैं परंतु सर्वोंच्च ड़र मौत का होता हैं। फीयर ईज गुड़ इट शोंज़ सरवाईवल इंन्सटीक्ट एंड़ यू लव युअर लाइफ। सांप सड़क से गुज़र रहा हैं आप बगल से गुज़र रहे हैं आप उसे बिना टच किए गुज़र जाए यही अच्छा हैं। सांप भी अपनी मौंत के ड़र से काटता हैं । पंथनगर में मैं मूतने बाथरूम गया तो देखा वहां सांप बैठा है चिपका हुआ टायलट से मैं मूत कर आया तो गलती कर दी और धिरज़ को बता दिया। वह बोला क्या बात कर रहा हैं अरे तुझसे पहले मैं मूतने गया था मैंने तो नहीं देखा वहां ड़स लेता तो। बादमें हल्ला मचा दिया और बाटला ने सांप मार डाला। कभी कभी हमला करने की जगह शांत बैंठने में भलाई होती हैं।Anyone who has served in the military knows that military training and service does not eliminate fear. In war to remain cool under pressure, to think rather than react, and to know when to wait and when to strike is important. 1945 के मार्च महीने में हिंद चीन के समुद्री तट से दूर दो सौ छहत्तर फूट पानी के नीचे रांबर्ट मूर अमेरीकी न्युजर्सी मेपलवूड़ निवासी ने जीवन का महत्वपूर्ण अनुभव प्राप्त किया था।वह पनडुब्बी के 88 व्यक्तियों में से एक था। वह बताते हैं हमने रड़ार यंत्रद्वारा मालूम कर लिया था कि एक छोटा सा जापानी पोत-समूह हमारी ओर बढ़ता चला आ रहा है और दिन निकलते ही उस पर आक्रमण करने के लिए हम पानी के नीचे बैठ गये। पेरिस्कोप द्वारा मैंने देख लिया था कि एक जापानी विध्वंसक, एक टेन्कर और एक माइन-लेयर हमारी ओर बढ़ रहे हैं। हमने तीन तारपिड़ो विध्वंसक की ओर छोड़े किन्तु कुछ यांत्रिक गड़बड़ी के कारण निशाना चूक गया । विध्वंसक को हमारे आक्रमण का पता ही न चला और वह आगे बढ़ता ही गया। अब हम अन्तिम पोत माइन-लेयर पर आक्रमण करने की तैयारी करने लगे, किन्तु यकायक वह मुड़ा और हमारी तरफ सीधे बढ़ने लगा। एक जापानी विमान ने हमें साठ फीट की गहराई में देख लिया था और रेड़ियों द्वारा इस की सूचना माइन-लेयर को दे दी थी। उनकी दृष्टि से ओझल होने के लिए हम एक सौ पचास फीट की गहराई में चले गये और वहीं से आक्रमण करने की तैयारी करने लगे। हमने हेचेज पर अतिरिक्त बोल्ट लगाये तथा पनडुब्बी को ध्वनि रहित करने के लिए पंखे, ठंड़क के यंत्र तथा अन्य इलेक्ट्रिकगियर बन्द कर दिये। तीन मिनट के बाद तो विपत्ति का पहाड़ ही टूट पड़ा। छ: बार हमारे चारों ओर धड़ाके हुए और जापानियों ने हमें दो सौ छहत्तर फीट की गहराई में बैठ जाने के लिए बाध्य कर दिया। हम घबरा उठे। हजार फीट से कम की गहराई में किया गया आक्रमण खतरनाक होता हैं किन्तु पांच सौ फीट से कम की गहराई में तो वह सचमुच ही घातक होता है। फिर हम पर तो 276 फीट की गहराई में ही आक्रमण किया जा रहा था। सुरक्षा के लिहाज़ से यह गहराई घुटने तक की गहराई के समान थी। पंद्रह घंटों तक जापानी माइन-लेयर हम पर लगातार गोले बरसाता रहा। यदि किसी भी पनडुब्बी के सत्रह फीट के आसपास कोई विस्फोट हो जाए तो उसमें छेद हो जाता है। किन्तु वे जो विस्फोट थे हमारे पचास फीट की दूरी पर हुए थे।
