Mine had the Silflex gear. A 8F project showed on the local Craigslist awhile back but I passed. Too many projects. I was friends with a local FBO owner that had been a Luscombe dealer. They sprayed with two T8F converted to O-320s for many years. I loved my Luscombe. It made me into a real pilot. Thank you for posting.

Thank you for the video showing both the fuselage 'pocket' area and brackets, and separately, the gear on the floor.

I watched this a bunch of times while we were repairing my 8A from a thing someone did, but I forgot to like it and say thanks. Thanks. Very helpful video.

Thanks for the video. Well presented info on Luscombe's, and classic aircraft in general, is getting harder to find. Keep'em coming.

Thank you for breaking everything down! I now have a better understanding of how the gear works. I've added this video to my favorites!

Nice to know. I have had 2 Luscombes and never knew how to single oleo functioned.

I did lots of one wheel landings, and walked it down the runway.. from wheel to wheel at 75 mph and it handled those loads just fine... f you can stay coordinated. The gear legs are Heat Treated ! so if somebody stupidly decides to weld on one. without heat normalizing it first, and re-heat treating it afterwards. That is when and how the gear leg can be weakened. One of the attach point holes in my gear leg got elongated ( probably not properly adjusted) and I had to go through that process so the AP could weld up the hole and re-drill it . Then took it back for heat treating and rockwell hardness testing. I think this may be where the urban legend that the old style gear isn't tough enough for side loads comes from.. I strongly disagree. The silflex is more elegant and simpler..and has less drag.. but the old gear was plenty tough and not bouncy.

Juan, Novice Luscombe owner here. I think I noticed tubular replacements for the landing gear "wires" on your Mighty Luscome. Did you build them or procure a kit? Otherwise, is there a significant advantage to the Silflex gear?

So when you go to replace that cover plate, how will you rivet it back to the structure? Where will you fit the bucking bar on the back row of rivets? Asking for a friend… Thanks!

lewisj, did you ever find out the answer to your question?

I am guessing that the outside skin needs to be removed .....@@lewisj856

OK Lewis, it actually, there is bucking bar access for the back row of rivets via the 4 inch inspection plate holes underneath the seats (looking at a parts manual, it is difficult to know this), as I observed from the actual airplane.

nice.. unless you remove the bottom skin aft of the firewall, you will never see this stuff!I think your plane has the heavier float plane rods in place of the wires.

Yep, draggier too. Doug's 8A is faster on less HP!
