      I don't know, I liked them from the start as a kid. I do remember I heard all these negative things about it and the smell was strong, but it wasn't unpleasant for me. Its like a nice strong gasoline type smell. coincidentally, I love the smell of gasoline too, so I wonder if love of durian smell and love of gasoline smell go together.

    I want to try fresh durian so bad. 😭
    I've eaten several prepared foods that contained it, and they were delicious.
    Oddly, the foods didn't "smell bad" to me. Strong, yes. Bad, no. Especially the mochi filled with durian paste. They smelled musky like an overripe cantaloupe, and there was sort of an egg yolk smell, and kinda a smell like jackfruit rind. The wierd thing was when I opened the mochi package, both I and my friend smelled it right away, but her reaction was to gag immediately. She described the smell as "like rotting trash and puke".
    I have this theory that it's like the thing with cilantro where you think cilantro tastes like soap if you have certain gene sequences, because when we offered our kids a taste, my son liked it but her kids reacted the same way she did. 🤷‍♀️

      @sheenawarecki92 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You're probably right about genetics. Often our preferred tastes do get passed down!! Funny enough we have a weird mutation of the cilantro soap gene in my family, it doesn't taste like soap but like chewing and aluminum can :') I want to try durian tho! I'm so intrigued by their descriptions, and as far as smell I mean I like stinky cheese and natto so I'm hoping I'm on a good track for durian 😂

      I hope you have gotten to try it or will soon. I live in California and was lucky to find a beautifully ripe one in a local market. It was turning golden brown and actually splitting open. Getting a variety that isn't too oniony is a good way to try it. But if you can't get one, try durian ice cream first. Either buying it or making your own. durian works well with no churn ice cream recipes.

    • @nimay13
      @nimay13 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I would recommend D101 because of the low-ish smell. Actually the Kampung/common variant is recommended but I don't think you can get them there. D24 and King are a bit gassy, hence the intense smell.
      Mindset-wise, try to cope with the smell and focus on the sweet taste. Tiny bite at a time, dont just chomp them down in one go.
      Have them with water, carbonated drink or alcohol is a big no-no.

    • @ssummerdew
      @ssummerdew 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      between D24 and MSW (mao shan wang or musang king), i always thought that D24 would be easier on beginners as it mainly tastes sweet, while MSW is stronger in taste and is usually described as sweet+bitter and more savoury. I prefer MSW because it tastes stronger/sweeter and more complex. also the MSW you get in south-east asia is way more mustard yellow than in this video, while D24 is a pale yellow. (take that most-yellow part of the MSW in this video, and imagine it being the same colour through the whole durian)

    Usually buying a container of musang king durian they would usually sneak in a few D24s and my family would always notice because it is usually not as sweet and D24 is also a bit of a paler yellow in compared to the king

    ive never had fresh, only durian in pastry and durian chips and i wanted to like it but the sulphur or gasoline taste was too bad for me. its probably a good fruit but i have a hard time with sensory things. i would like to try a musang king sometime. i love mild and slightly sweet and i think durian could be something i can acquire a taste for as i cannot have to bitter citrus like grapefruit and its almost like the opposite

    I like the musang king (pronounced moo-sang) it's good. Musang is the big favorite in Singapore. I like the D24 it's a different texture & flavour profile compared to the musang king. I'm going to miss fresh, never frozen durian (I've been living in Singapore) but I'm moving back to Vancouver soon. Ah well.

    Musang King is way overrated in my opinion. Yes it tastes good but not at the prices they're being sold (at least here in Malaysia even near it's origin - the Musang Caves). Because of that my go-to high end durian is still the D24. You can get 3 or 4 D24 for the price of one Musang King

    • @elyens2360

      D24 and red prawn are better. There, I said it, musang king is overrated. It's like the least offensive of the "advanced" variants, it's nowhere near as strong as the red prawn or as bitter as the D24

    Try find durian jantung or the heart durian,rarely seen even in malaysia,very big around 10-15kg per fruits,the flesh very creamy like the whipped cream,no bitterness, a single wedges of flesh can esily stuffed you up,damn i miss that durian,my family happened had a single tree of that durian,but someone just jealous and poison that tree,the tree really hard to cloned because so big and tall,like 20-25meter tall,yes thats a very ancient vatiety of durian,a single tree only produce 7-10 fruits every year,but a single fruits enough to feed 10-12 people
