I have heard the arguments before that the opponent is either Esau or Esau's guardian angel from Jewish sources, but I can't remember which specific sources.

Jacob wrestled Esau and received his blessing. It’s veiled in darkness. The same way he got his blessing from his father. Jacob the Godly man wrestled Esau the hairy/beastly carnal man. Same thing happens in the story of the renaming of Jacob to Israel. He’s called by different names. Is it because he’s operating as a worldly or godly person at the time? Jacob wrestles Esau in the womb and in the field. Common theme in ancient literature. Gilgamesh the demi god wrestles enkidu the half wild and hairy counter part. Same kind of symbolism

He wrestled with a Malak (מלאך)..messenger sent by Hashem…he blesses him and Changes his name from Ya’acov (יעקוב)which comes from the root word of עקב to mean Heal..so basically He Grabbed his brother’s heel to take his place as the first born who receives double blessing(portion )as Hashem commands in Deut 21:17…but now He receives a New Name Yisrael..to mean he who struggled with G-D..so basically now no longer will he be struggling with his brother but now all his struggles will be btwn him and Hashem..that Hashem will fight for him in all his struggles .we see this throughout his children the 12 tribes who underwent lots of struggles with other nations as Hashem fought for them…Same will he fight for them in the future (Amaggedon)..So he who fights or struggles with Yisrael..is simply Fighting with G-D…(Zechariah 2:8)

Absurd. So it’s a “human” regardless of the fact the Word of God says it’s God/an Angel… So I guess Jacob and Hosea were both wrong 😂
No wonder David was not able to find anyone else making such a claim of it being a human opponent.
