Desi literally means local or native. It's a hindi word (derived from Sanskrit) mostly used by Indians. So if an Indian says "Desi", it means he is referring to an Indian thing, whereas "Videshi" means foreigner.
Our version of “Latino/Latina”
'Vilaayati' is also used colloquially for something foreign.
Desi is Sanskrit word , later got into not just hindi but many other SA languages.
Actually in uttarakhand we use desi for other Indians and pahadi for native people of mountains like nepali, uttarakhand ,hp, and Kashmiri

This is exactly why we listen to old songs and not the new ones! we dont even pay attention to what music is being released these days, because it is mostly shit... except for a few hidden gems here and there!!!

"Desi' is hindi word which is use for whole south asian community. For example Desi peoples ( peoples from south asian countries) , desi music ( music from south aisan countries) & desi-pop (pop music from south asian countries) etc.

desi means “ of the land” desi people are “people from 1 land”. this includes people from Pakistan, India and Bangladesh as they were all 1 land without major border before separation by the British. south asian would be the correct term to refer to anyone from all of south asian this includes : bhutan nepal india pakistan bangladesh maldives and sirlanka and a few smaller islands. while there are similar cultures throughout all of south asia, desi would refer only to those of 1 land before divide so pakistan india and bangladesh.
