Males get to be about 7 inches and females a little under 6 inches. We also have a different crab...aka sheep or spider crab. These get huge...2-3 feet across.

@@chriscarey8169 nice do you catch many of the 7-6 incher browns from the so-cal piers?

@@leecarterreppinjesuschrist7686 Yes! We go out just about every week. There are several types of rock crab...Yellow, red and brown, we often catch yellow too which tend to be a bit larger. They all taste great though. We usually only keep one or two good ones each and release the rest. Most times we'll cook, clean and freeze the catch the same day...then once every month or two we'll do a New Orleans style boil and use up the crab along with crawfish and shrimp that we buy.

@@chriscarey8169 thanks for the reply il prob never visit but I love most things so-cal .. I heard so cal wasn’t good for crabbin because no dungeness.. plus I thought yellow crabs were rare north of San Diego. Didn’t know you get regular 7inch rock crab from the piers

For crabbing at the pier is normal pier fishing rules but the crab needs to be 4” across the shell. You can get the measurement device called a crab gauge at any fishing store. For lobster fishing at the pier you need to use a hoop net and have a lobster license which you can buy at big 5. You also need a lobster gauge which looks similar to a crab gauge. The lobster have to be at least 3 and 1/4 inches and the season ends in march.

Thank you sour grapes! To add to that you don't need a fishing license to fish off of the piers.
