A steeper tail does not actually 'pop higher', instead it allows for more time (before) for you to jump up in order to allow the board to go up more. There's also more travel before the tail or nose hits the ground, which mostly influences timing and not so much pop height. In terms of rigidness and such, a whole bunch more comes down to the weight of the entire setup actually. It's fairly hard to distinguish the true difference in pop when it comes to fresh decks in most cases. (Especially because different decks will require you to get used to the different timings involved! Some people hate steep decks because of the change in timing and possibility for ghost pop etc.). It only becomes different when different materials were used, like for example the Powell Peralta Flight decks (pop on those is truly insane, and they're actually fairly mellow decks). Also, bigger wheels matter more for most setups for sure due to the range of steepness where nothing is too crazy.

Man Zach’s style is just so smooth and solid! Love watching him skate!
I personally can’t skate a mellow board though. I feel like there’s less board feel for me with a mellow board like I’m just standing on a 2x6 or something.

  • @CykPykMyk
    @CykPykMyk 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

physics between both really interests me. Its fascinating. The fact that steep board is "easier" to pop and flip is a fact, tho that doesnt scratch off the mellow board. Both of em good as hell. I suppose its all about taste, but I'd research these cases in some physical simulation...

In the late 90s, dwindle boards came In steep concaves, it was called monster mold concave and most of them were 7.75, that size mixed with a steep concave was incredible so my point is, I think steep concaves on small boards is a perfect combo, the wider they get the harder it is to control. I feel a wide board with a steep concave should be paired with super low trucks and 50mm wheels. Just my opinion

Currently riding a 8.25 Steep Deathwish and it was my first steep board. It didn’t skate too differently. It felt a little more comfortable than a mellow board with how it catches my foot when I ollie or when I am trying weird transition tricks. Between the steepness and the extra grip its just clinging too much. Trucks play a big role when having a steep or mellow board. In general, Indys work better with mellow boards, while thunders work usually better with steep boards, due to the height and wheelbase difference.

I tend to find steep decks have shorter tails so Indies work best to give me some tail back while thunders and ventures add wheelbase length which would make the steep short tail feel even shorter and steeper.
I like mellow decks with Thunder and ventures with some height for those brands. Steeper decks like FA Hockey get Indie trucks with forged baseplates to lower the tail and shorten wheel base.

  • @apocx4290

Mellow boards are the way to go for me, cannot stand steep kicks and concave. I’m that picky with my board I often constantly shop for a spare board whilst skating a fresh setup because they are hard to come by a solid flat deck I find. More times than I can count I’ve spent £70 on a deck and it’s either on a pile with the rest of them after an hours skate on it, or I’ve given it to someone else to skate. I’m one of the very particular people, I’m the same with trucks and wheels, have to be either low Indy hollow lights with 52mm wheels or tensor lows with the hollow kingpin. I actually had a pair of thunder lows that were really good but got ‘stolen’ when I left them in the boot of my mates car.
Great video though and solid skating all round!

Here’s a question… regarding kick/heel flips, or any other flip trick, someone who rides a steep concave and loose trucks…
The extra power they get in their flips due to that more dramatic flick-angle creating more leverage to spin the board faster/harder,…
Is such power lost/negated by the fact that when flicking a deck with loose trucks, that, similar to a flat/less Ridgid deck compared to a steeper/more Ridgid deck, some of that energy put into making the board flip is lost when being transferred from the foots’ “flick” to actual causation of spin, as the deck would need to compress/rock all the way it can until it’s level of resistance to said compression, ever increasing, is greater than gravities resistance to the board going against it. Tighter trucks would transfer energy through all that space/all those components to where it needs to go faster and more efficiently. Wouldn’t it?

Like Irving was saying, I like the comfortable feeling of my feet flat down on the board when I do like kickflips or heelflips, but not gonna lie, full concave kinda improve my tre flips, its just because when you scoop a super concaved board, the board leverage going towards you is like a faster react time, so my flip on a tre flip full concave board is a faster more fluent flip, but Im used to tre flipping mellow ones, so I get primod on full concaved boards a lot lol, and just the landing primo, mello, vs steep, like steep hurts your feet way more, mellow is not as bad, I swear everytime I have skated full concave I roll my ankle, only been 3 times for experiment purposes, but went straight back to mellow lol

Grew up with the PP Welinder Nordic Skull. Awesome board! 30 years later I’m getting on a board again and was gonna go for my original deck. Saw the Old School Ripper in deep concave and was kinda persuaded toward the deep concave. Went for a it and it is very comfortable for me personally. Gripping snd maneuvering is very good compared to a flatter deck. For me anyhow. Happy with my purchase.

Like big steep pro-decks aren't the reason for division of content of skateboarding. Regarding sponsorship limitations of preferences regarding true costs of manufacturing and business and brands. Especially things that are blank...

There are decks with super steep concave yet mellow kick-tail angles/pitch. Like my current set up for instance. In regards to the tail anyway. 8” width and in that axis/dimension, the amount of drop in the center from the edges, is one of the most dramatic I’ve seen in a while. Uncomfortably steep for most. Yet my tails’ pitch is a cool 17-18 degrees. The nose is steep however. 20-21 degrees. I feel like that’s pretty average for nose pitch though. Even in flatter decks. Concave and kick-pitch, while being directly correlated, are not always and don’t have to be mutually inclusive of one another.

I definitely like a flatter board like the Powell Flight 243 or the Real Ishod Twin Tail.

I used to love the steepest board I could find but now I like the medium everything only because it’s a madness to me to where I think it’s the most well rounded somehow lol 🤷🏽‍♂️😂 makes sense if you think about it but I doubt it actually happens Ben matters. I am the same when I go shopping for a skateboard deck if I see that it’s mellow I can’t ever commit to buying it because I had the worst experience 20 years ago on my friends world industries flat ass no concave board and I couldn’t skate it for shit and that’s never left me. I want to try one again to see if anything is different this time around but spending money that I don’t have on something I don’t know I will skate to death just scares me to death 💀 too broke too so something that crazy 😆

I like a mellow board with risers😊, and extra loose trucks with hard bushings. Shout out independent and the 8.5 too

blank decks are an insult to the people, who actually care about skateboarding, they may be cheap, but they hurt the skateboard industry players, who actually care about the community, the artists, and the skaters behind the brands.
no more blank decks! support your skate community and buy decks with graphics, instead of cheap crap!

Yeah we all understand that. These are samples from a board manufacturer. We were testing the quality so no need to waste ink on a graphic promoting nothing. I haven’t seen a blank board in the wild in at least 5 years.

Honestly the kicks aren’t the issue, its all about concave and wheelbase, preferably steeper and longer, respectively. Oh and no shovels lol

I can tell you. Deep concave board's or the best. I'm a heavy guy. And it works for me even when I do lose this weight deep concave for life

I am a mellow concave myself, but its just what I'm used to, I feel boards have gotten more concaved over the years, I actually used to skate a concave when I was younger, and it was like pretty much the equavlent of mellow these days, I just come from the late 90s early 2000s board were flatter lol, but now a days I ride a mellow concave either 8.25, or 8.38
