    This is my official review of the Nikon 300mm f/4 AF NIKKOR Lens. This lens was introduced in 1987 with an all metal construction and I will tell you why this might be the perfect option if you want a 300mm and your on a tight budget.
    Are you looking to shoot at a 300mm focal length but don't want to spend thousands of dollars doing it? This might be a great option for you.
    In this video I will go over the features of this lens. I will go over the tech specs. I will also take it out and take some sample images so you guys can see just what this lens from the 80's can do on your newer more modern Nikon Digital cameras DSLR.
    If your a beginner photographer and you just don't have the funds for the high end 300mm lenses like the amazing 300mm f/2.8 vrii lens that cost 5K or don't want to spend 2k on the new 300mm E lens then go back a few decades and check this baby out.
    I will also tell you how much I paid for my copy and show you just how good this lens can produce. Rock & Roll Photographers
    This lens auto focus with work on the Nikon D2x d2h d2xs d3 d3s d3x d4 d4s d5 d6 d800 d810 d850 d600 d610 d750 d780 . and more, Basically any DSLR that has auto focus motors built in is a go.
    This 300mm f/4 AF will not autofocus with the Nikon Mirrorless Z50 Z5 Z6 Z6ii Z7 Z7ii Z8 Z9 cameras with the FTZ adapter.
    If this is the first time on this channel I invite you to Subscribe to my channel for more photography related original content. This is the 4th or 5th time I watched this. This has to be the best lens review on all of TH-cam. It was exactly what I was looking for in a lens review regarding a lens I'm interested in. Not some person inside a house or office talking talking talking loving to hear themselves spout a whole diatribe of specs etc etc without ever going outside and presenting actual photo samples. On first watch of this video I had no idea who you were and didn't know that you are such an accomplished professional. Some but not all professionals kinda speak in a condescending tone and it's off-putting when one is an amateur and just loves photography because it's fun, fun to learn, and it's an artistic form of self expression. Sorry how long this comment is but I thought I'd share my feelings. The lens turned out to be in bad shape. Oh well. I did buy an old 70-210 f/4. It's from the 80's and what a gem. Love it.

      Ken, thank you so much. This comment made my day. Happy you enjoyed this review and helped you out. I love this lens so much. Size and quality of glass. I will never sell it. It has that old gem character. Thank you for such High praise. I am flattered and humbled. You can tell I dont do well with compliments, lol i just sometimes dont know what to say. but I am humbled by your comments. Makes me go out there and try harder on my next video. Guys like you Ken that I do this for. Yes it does take time from like a business but at the end of the day if I can make a difference in one person's photography journey than the goal is met. Rock n Roll and thank you

    The greatest review of this lens on YT. The color saturation, microcontrast, 3D pop, sharpness, bokeh and low price is all unbelievable! The only issues with this lens is some CA on bright contrasting edges and the extremely hard to find and expensive Nikon 39mm drop-in filter but otherwise this lens is near perfection.

    The AF-D 300mm f/4 ED is a wonderful lens and built rock-solid. The 300mm 2.8 ED is a fraction sharper wide open, but I prefer to carry this F4 version in the bag, along with the AF-D 20-35mm f/2.8 and the legendary AF-D 200mm f/4 ED Micro. All these lenses are built like tanks and have a superb 'feel' to them...together with outstanding performance matched to the old F5 or D5, D800, D850 etc. With more than five decades of serious photography and filming under my belt, I still love to use these lenses in 2020...and no doubt during 2021! :)

      Big Size difference between a 2.8 and this lens. Can you imagine lugging the 2.8 around in your bag. Heavy while on transport and while using it too. This 300 D is compact and built very solid. Feels good in the had. I wished it was AF-S with this body style. Imagine AF-s but older body style. haha one can wish

      You will be just fine. Sure AF-S more expensive offerings have advantages as far as focus speed, but for the price we paid and the reach with it not being f5.6 or below. cant complain. Ofcourse I would rather use a 300 f2.8 AFS VR but that lens cost a few thousand dollars and if your not getting paid good money on the regular then it doesnt make sense to invest in such a lens unless your financial situation permits you. Personally if money was no object I would be buying the 400mm 2.8 vr. haha that lens is massive for baseball. MLB shooters industry standard, but we talking about yankee stadium and rigley field, hehe you did good Brennan. congrats. Enjoy the lens and let me know what you think after you shoot a few games.

    • @brennanprobst1795
      @brennanprobst1795 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@primate2744 Overall I'd say it's good, not great. The AF is noticeably slower and less accurate than my 70-200mm f/2.8 AFS VR I. When you nail focus it's very sharp, but that might not happen so often as it does have trouble keeping up with moving subjects. For reference I use a Nikon D780. For what I do it's definitely good enough (photos for my baseball team newsletter and some paid high school sports gigs), but if you're shooting professionally I'd probably go for something a little newer.

    really good review and the images wow!!!, the contrast and 3D pop looks really good. Could you please make a short video about the focus limiter of this lens?.....it seems its a variable distance limiter and I spotted a mark as far as 30meters, whereas most lenses nowadays hace just one position (3 to 6 meters most cases). It would be fine to see how much the AF improves when set near to infinity in the limiter (10meters and beyond).

    Great review of a great lens. I notice some comments concerning chromatic aberration/fringing, but I have not seen that yet. I took a photo of the moon the other night just to see how it compared to another lens I have and was amazed there was absolutely no fringing on the bright edges of the moon in the raw image - no corrections applied. You comments were spot on about who should buy this lens - most folks will use 300mm sparingly, and you cannot beat this deal.

In my openion I would not use this lens with any TC. If you plan on using TC with these 300mm lenses, I would get an AF-S more modern lens for better AF performance. Using this AF lens without a TC, yes perfect, no problem.

    Great review. I picked up this lens and it had some road wear on it, but, optically it is amazing. Amazing how sharp it is. I use it on my D500 with a cropped effective focal length of 450mm due to the 1.5 crop factor. The lens is slow to focus compared to today's focusing motors, but optically, those newer lenses do not come near the sharpness and color rendition of this lens. Great glass from a time gone by. All metal construction and balances well on the D500. I would drive nails with the lens but one might be able to with how well it is constructed. Thanks for the great review.

    Thank you for your thoughtful review. I have had this lens for a few years, along with the f2.8 AI-s and I'm in about $1000 for both (together). I would rate the 2.8 as superior optically, but not by much. The f4 AF is softer wide open than the f2.8 and there is some slight green/purple fringing on the edges of the frame. at f8 and down, it goes away and their performance is so almost identical.

      @Vahagraphy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Glad you enjoyed the review Madness. Both great lenses and to be expected with the 2.8. This is why one pays for a 2.8. faster glass and more expensive. but per your observations and usage, the f4 is an amazing lens for what it is and for how much you can pay for it today, its a no brainer. and on top of all that it will AF with pro cameras that have those focus motors and it does a very good job at it aswell. As a bonus, its built like and tank and is not that big. Its a win win on all fronts.

    I purchased this lens 12 years used to mount on my d300. I did great safari pictures in India and Tanzania. Then I switched to Olympus for weight purpose and my d300 broke down. So my lens stayed at home for 6 years.
    Last week, a friend of mine got the d850 and we compared it with this lens on versus my Olympus with pro lenses Guess what ? I just purchased a used d800 just to use this lens again !
    And on full frame it is even better.
    Thanks again !

    Just ordered one from Adorama for $309 V Rated for Very Good Condition. I saw one on Ebay for $270 that looked good but cant go wrong with Adorama and their return policy(which I doubt I'll be using). They have given me some mint lenses in the past that were rated V so thank you for your review on this lens and will update when it arrives. I got it mostly for portraits and weddings when I need that reach. Excited and not too far off what you paid!

      Hi Shane, Good price. Congrats on your purchase. Hope it works out for you. You will enjoy the extra reach. The only draw back is the focus speed and focus noise but hey for $300 haha thats a non issue. The size and weight is another plus. It has this solid image quality I love. Yes it has no VR and hand holding it can get some getting used to, but with high shutter speed you will be fine. Have fun with it and let me know what you think.

    The rendering looks amazing, almost 3D like in quality where many other lenses look relatively flat in a 2-D printed or on-screen photo. The depth that lens adds is incredible and to my eye it is more due to the rendering than the depth of the subjects in the image. Beautiful!

I can't explain it, well I will try, You know when you increase the contrast on a raw file in post, it just takes away from other paets of the image, but when images are born with that deep contrast. ahhhh its solid. Hello Rschellie. Thank you for the sub. appreciate it and welcome to vahagraphy. I mostly use this lens when there is enough light to shoot. Haven't had any issues with CA and fringing. However, my guess would be it would perform abou tht esame as the 80-200mm 2.8. I haven't used that lens you mentioned in a long time so don't quote me on that. But from my usage, since I use it with allot of light It suites my needs well. If your looking for a low light performer. This would not be a lens I would get. Your better off buying a 70-200 2.8 vri and a tc 1.4x for better results. first you wil have faster focus and that lens is more modern and it is an afs. sure its going to cost you a little bit more money however that lens with the 1.4x TC would be a much better performer.

    I used to have the 300 2.8 ais. It was spectacular. I have this now - I'd say it's between 90 and 95% of the goodness of the 2.8.

      Von der Schärfe nehmen sich beide nichts, sind auf gleicher Höhe. Das 2.8 hat aber Vorteile im Fokus durch die offenere Blende.

      @@413TomaccoRoad In terms of sharpness, the two are on the same level. However, the 2.8 has advantages in focus due to the wider aperture.

      @@Farrinah I never used the 2.8 at 2.8 anyway.

    Am I able to mount this on my D3500?

    • @Vahagraphy
      @Vahagraphy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello there, thanks for the question, Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but sadly the D3500 will not Auto focus with this lens. Older non G lenses like this one need built in focus motors to AF. To answer your question, it will mount and work with your camera and you can use it to manual focus the lens but not AF.
