From what I remember, this is in reference to Columbine and other shootings that happened like it. A lot of the kids involved where into music like Marilyn Manson and the media made it seem like the music and other influences were the problem. I think Eminem was dragged into it as well. Columbine was the first large, organized school shooting and it seemed that others followed or at least they were more publicized and a lot of musicians that weren’t approved in main stream culture were blamed for the phenomenon. And it happened in “middle America,” where kids were suppose to be safe.

@Dylan Schneider I thought so too, but actually there’s a bit of time between Columbine and this song, but I remember Columbine kind of kicked off this period in history where school shootings became a thing. It wasn’t an isolated thing and an explanation had to be found and “bad” music was part of what people thought made these individuals do these things.

Obviously, I came to the conclusion that it didn’t make anyone do anything. We were just kids, though, we still half believed everything we saw on the news.

The two kids Eminem was referring to, who were said to have been inspired by songs written by Marilyn (Manson), was in reference to a mass school shooting that occurred in the late '90s. The school in question was Columbine High School in Columbine, CO. The two students, on the other hand, who committed the crime together were both seniors. Their names were that of Eric Harris of Wichita (KS), age 18, and Dylan Klebold of Lakewood (CO), age 17. Both seniors died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds after killing 13 people and wounding 24 others. Apparently, they were both in a cult and had been influenced by Marilyn Manson's music, which initially gave them the idea that eventually led them to committing the most heinous crime imaginable, for it's time.

It talked about how the two high school boys started filming themselves playing graphic late '90s FPS video games. Later on, it showed their collection of glock pistols among other weapons in their armory. The two, then, briefly began pointing their glock pistols right at the camera lense, while at the same time, began explicitly yelling words of profanity in a terrifying demeanor. Heck, if I went to their school, I would have avoided them at all costs. I mean, that stuff just isn't right, man!

One of my favorite Eminem songs.
Back in the 90's, the first mass media/mass shooting happened at a high school in Colorado called Columbine. When the media delved deeper into the shooters lives, to figure out why they did it, they discovered that they listened to Marilyn Manson music. (Marilyn, in this case, is a man, & band that plays goth rock music.) And because his music is so dark & creepy, he was blamed as being the fuel that fired them up to go all trigger happy. So then Marilyn Manson was interviewed, & it was a very intelligent interview on how Marilyn answered the questions. If you can dig it up, it's worth checking out. Marilyn Manson is a very controversial singer/musician/band. So Eminem is stating, just like himself, the media likes to put blame on musicians when something goes wrong, instead of putting blame where it actually belongs.

Good to know that my first experience in Germany with rap was Eminem and never German rap or mumble rap. The best ever and I felt it with 13 🔥 now I'm 25 and still loving him and can't get enough of his songs 🤤

We're disrespectful because we come from an ara where we don't gaf. We didn't care about hurting feelings because we didn't have any. So yes, we related to his f**k it attitude, and we loved that he said whatever was on his mind because 9-10 we did too. We all have rage inside us. We felt this song way more than most could imagine. A bunch of people who raised themselves. That's his fanbase.

Em ha gone through so many stuff, some very relatable to all of us, but also some from a position most wont understand, even tho we see it all the time with "famous" people
The diference is, that he put all the feelings he had in his music, like an open book and its amazing

I just started watching your channel and I noticed that the bands and artists you tend to react the strongest to are also the most intelligent musicians in the business (Rush, Tool, Rage, Queen etc) , and Eminem is most definitely a genius as well. This is my favorite song of his and at the time, he was really catching a lot of both positive and negative attention…positive for the song “My Name Is” which attracted a lot of pop-ish fans which was not the demographic he really intended to reach but was expected to continue to pump out catchy mainstream songs and be a “nice guy”, and he resented that. Negative because of some of his other songs that were listened to by conservative people (because of the mainstream success of My Name Is” ) and they found him offensive and crucified him in the media, which he also resented.
You mentioned he is seen as disrespectful but I see him more as irreverent. This song is his expression of so many frustrations at the time and his cadence and lyrical style are, in my opinion, a master class in writing on this song.
Anyway, cheers, really enjoying your channel! 🎉🎉

This album, and this track in particular, not so hard when it came out bc Em had been being attacked since his last cd for his language and content. Everyone from activists to parents to Congress were coming at his throat and this album was his response. It was so hype.
