Always interesting to see these mistakes. The tommy gun or thompson m1a1 submachine gun would start with the bolt open before being fired. It is not like an m1 garand where the bolt starts closed.

Ok yes I agree it’s dumb, but perhaps the disconnector was fucked and pulling the trigger only dropped the sear for a moment allowing the bolt to catch on the second sear notch. Still dumb but at least remotely possible

Watch the first test fire after the click. Went off on its own.
Just to clarify that's not how the Thompson works. Its a open bolt sub machine gun. Which means the trigger is pressed it allows the bolt to slide forward. That "click" only happens with closed bolt guns as the click indicates a hammer was released and it struck the firing pin. There is no hammer on open bolt guns.
That's a Tommy gun used by the Americans and us Brits in WW2 - Forget to turn off safety lock first I think so. lol!

The last guard was tinkering around with the gun to find the problem and accidentally shot the prisoner. Getting the job done accidentally still counts as getting a job done.

There's an issue here. If the bolt carrier doesn't move, there is no audible click. Sure the trigger gives away a marginal sound, but the click yields from the bolt carrier lunging forward. The charging handle is motionless, so the bolt carrier and lock must be too.

The bolt handle (that round thing in the back of the long slot) is supposed to go forward when the trigger is pulled. It did, when the gun finally fired. So, what was all the clicking before?
Fortunately for them, the intern found out how to operate a machine gun. ;)

I have heard similar stories in China, when nobody wants to be the killer so they will all lie about the gun malfunction. Until some one green came to fire the gun accidently because he was so sure the gun was really broken.
When we had the death penalty here in Britain . We used to use hanging . A trap door would open , so they fell through. Then the rope would tighten killing them . But if the trap door failed to open, after two tries they would be let go free.
It took two times to hang Captain Kidd.
That's an urban legend, but it's a myth. The reality is they'd just keep trying it until they got it right
The rope was never supposed to tighten and kill them, the noose was tied in such a way that the drop would break their neck, hence the hangmans knot. That is of course if we're talking about trapdoor executions. Many have been hanged by a rope over a bough back before things were 'standard'.
Didn't something like this happened during medieval period to a teen prisoner, the rope would snap each time he was dropped, after the third try authorities took it as a divine intervention and freed the prisoner.
