  • A fun arvo testing some new Okuma gear and filming a new mini fishing series 🎣
    The guys at Okuma were keen to give me a couple of new surfcasting combos to take out for the day, I had a spot in mind and even though it was a little later in the season due to Covid I was still keen to go give it a shot. Launchi9ng thew boat around 4pm we headed up the coast to a spot I'm still trying to learn it's secrets. One thing I love when doing this you are normally the only one there, arriving a little early I had to wait out the tide as it was a little deep for my spot. I got a few rigs ready in the little tin while I waited and I also had a couple of new Okuma rods and reels I wanted to trial. First glimpse of the new 3pce 14ft Soul surf combo'd up with the Okuma 8k surf reel looked the goods. I also had the new 13'6 3pce Wave power paired up with the new Rockaway. 20mins later I was out of the boat and on my little sand bar, I started with the Soul surf and 8K. It's a nice slimline blank and they run the metal ferrules to strengthen the joins which I quite liked.
    Flicking out my first bait I got a good 90-100mtrs on a 5oz breakaway, sitting it in the rod holder I set up the other combo. I like to fish a little lighter on the second set so I can't cast as far and also run a suicide hook, it's a lot easier and the rod holder normally catches the fish for me. I wasn't expecting anything to big as we had missed that magic early Spring time I was hoping to fish here but it didn't take long before I started getting a few bites. I hooked up on the Wave power first and it was a good tackle tester, it was just a little ray. Baiting up I flicked out and sat it back in the holder only to get nibbles straight away, although tempted to grab it I just let the rod holder and suicide hook to do it's thing. With it rattling away it buckled over and hooked up, these hooks work a treat alright.
    This one was just a little snap which I released quickly to get another bait out, the tide was still dropping which was going to line up for the late evening. I like to fish this spot on the turn and I knew there would be a few small fish around till then. Next was a little kahawai on the Soul surf, although nothing big was around it was still fun as there was plenty of action. I decided to keep the Kahawai for a bit of fresh bait, if the big boys turn up it's always good to have those harder baits. Looking over the other combo had done it's job - the rod holder was hooked up again. It was another species, this time a little dog fish. Coming into the evening I cubed up the Kahawai in hope to entice a better snapper, the great thing is even if the pickers have ago the bait stays on longer.
    The Soul surf started getting bites but having a good chunk of kahawai I knew just wait for that hit, a few seconds later the rod buckled over and I struck. It felt like a lot better fish, still nothing big but defiantly better. It was a nice snap close to that 50cm and it was good at last have a better fish on the new rod. I thought this was going to be the start as it was coming into dark but it wasn't to be, I got another tackle tester (bigger ray) and I finished the evening off with a nice little carrot to keep my snapper company in the bin.
    Although the fishing was a little hard it was still a fun arvo, I caught a few fish on the new gear and the guys got some footage to get the little series started.

      Karekare is quite a difficult beach to read and fish - one day it will give you fish the next nothing. I think the fish maybe out a little deeper this time of year, maybe spawning? I like that early Spring, late summer to early Autumn.

      Yep I'm a pretty harsh striker when it comes to my fishing but I run a lean drag to compensate for it as well as using braid.

      Hi RV
      It's a good little combo to start with - the reel is up there and should last you. The rod is pretty identical to the Soul surf I'm using in this vid. I get good distance with it, it's a little more parabolic than the Kotare but I flick up to a 5oz on it and get roughly 100mtr (not over loaded) flick.

    Epic video brother , always super informative, do you recommend not tightening your drag fully when fighting fish and using braid? Been busted off couple times lately with drag at full tension (okuma avenger 8000 30lb braid) ,

    • @Reel-Kiwi-Fishing
      @Reel-Kiwi-Fishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers CH
      Yep always set your drag so you can pull string, braid has no stretch so I even run a lose-ish drag when I strike. Not to lose but enough so if something big grabs it there's a little give. it's a lot easier to tighten your drag if needed but never lock it up the line will snap. 30lb is enough but you can jump up to 50lb only if you are getting busted off more like from sand rubbing etc.

    Just a question, I know it's an older model but is my Okuma Travertine TRB 80 spooled with 50lb braid any good for surfcasting and catching Kingfish?

    • @Reel-Kiwi-Fishing
      @Reel-Kiwi-Fishing  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi hb27
      I don't know of these reels but they seem similar to the new Tom Cat? I would think using it for surfcasting would be fine but may not hold up to catching kingfish - it may catch one here or there with no problems but wouldn't call it an ideal targeting kingfish reel.

    • @Reel-Kiwi-Fishing

      Only been fishing with it a short while but it's a nice combo at a great price - nice slimline blank, graphite, K-guides, metal ferrules and topped of with the 8k reel makes a pretty perfect surfcasting combo.

    hello is the 8k reel heavy and can i pare it with the kotare cannon?

    • @Reel-Kiwi-Fishing
      @Reel-Kiwi-Fishing  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi iw
      The 8K would be one of the bigger reels in the Okuma surf range but it's not overly heavy just a big reel - purposely built for surfcasting it has the long spool and slower osculation etc. The Kotare would hold the reel but because it's super light I would match it up with something a little lighter to balance it a little better. The best thing to do would be to get the 8k in your hand to see how it feels to you. Or you could match the 8k with the new MC Nano that has the sliding reel seat?
      Hope that helps and tight lines
