  • In a rare Vancouver appearance, Coleman Barks lead our audience on a journey through the life and works of Rumi. His recitations were accompanied, as Sufi poetry often was and is, with music. On the barbat is the foremost player of the instrument, Iranian musician Hossein Behroozinia. On sitar is maestro Mohamed Assani, on tombak is Hamin Honari, with vocals by Jamal Salavati. The musicians trace Rumi's own life journey, by playing music from Afghanistan, Iran and Turkey.
This evening of divine poetry and music took place in the stunning setting of St. Andrew's-Wesley United Church, doing justice to Rumi's words -- there are a hundred ways to kneel and kiss the ground.
This event was presented at Indian Summer Festival 2014 in Vancouver, BC and sponsored by Nature's Path Foods, with support from Banyen Books and Sound, Caravan World Rhythms, Hollyhock and Vancouver Asian Heritage Month Society.

    Here is a short statement:
The heart is entirely a gaze, a sight.
The language of the heart is spoken only in silence.
    💚

This is stunningly beautiful and shows the wonderful esoteric side of Islam that we rarely see in the news. Sufism through Rumi is deeply religious while at the same time transcending religious boundaries so it has a universal meaning for people everywhere. That's why Rumi's poems are famous in the USA. Thanks for posting this. Indeed, if we could just remember that there are a "Hundred Ways to Kneel and Kiss the Ground", the whole Middle East situation could be solved and conflict everywhere would be less.

Rumi's poems are popular in the US because Americans seek any spiritual source, having little themselves. This version of Rumi is denatured of the original meaning as Coleman has reversioned poor translations. It's nice to listen to (apart from the distorted recording) but it's "Rumi for Westerners". Someone is having a laugh somewhere

The end of this work was very very interesting, that music, dance was a reflection of Rumi's ecstatic poetry, really. Thanks you all

You are truly a person in my life I’ll never forget and will always be praised, so let’s dance as Rumi wanted a death to be cause it’s not shy to say, death is calling you to the next chapter but you did it man you really did it. Thank you so much

This place is a dream. Only a sleeper considers it real. Then death comes like dawn, and you wake up laughing at what you thought was your grief. 💚RUMI

    How Rumi Destroyed My life
He captures the imagination and directs them toward a self-destructive path of giving away material pleasures and physical comfort through periods of fasting to cause hallucinations and dread and preys on your conscience and uses the guilt to guide people towards depression and hopelessness
Rumi is a hiding behind dark love directed towards the divine
He claims to represent tolerance and universal love
He claims that the spirit of his love dwells in every human heart
His teachings lead to intense hallucinations especially during periods of hardship such as physical pain or dehydration
He hides behind faith and spirituality but his teachings are full of hubris. This is evident in his teachings through a lack of any sort of acknowledgement of mistakes
He captures the imagination and directs them toward a self-destructive path of giving away material pleasures and physical comfort through periods of fasting to cause hallucinations and dread and preys on your conscience and uses the guilt to guide people towards depression and hopelessness Some might remember a bearded Uber drive in the DC area who introduced people to Rumi in ignorance.
