Hey Alissa. I wouldn't recommend tape as a flow reducer, as it can contain chemicals you do not want in the water. I suggest you cut a plastic water bottle in half (without the label/glue) to size of the filter. You can do a TH-cam search on how to make one- I believe searching "DIY betta filter flow reducer" should recommend great videos. This method is much better, cheap, and lasts long! Where as tape will eventually lose its stick/grip, will not last as long, and contains chemicals.
@@Drupp12 right at the flow point in the back. I guess you can say the "lip" of the filter. I also have some rocks in there, also you can get one of those black or white sponges and shape it to fit

I have that exact tank. I put a suction cup soap holder under the filter so it goes slower when it starts to over flow. You can put some stones and beads in the soap holder so it looks pretty. I bought my soap holder off of amazon.
No hate but to anyone who is wanting a betta its best to fully cycle the tank before getting the fish. This can take from 4 weeks or longer and gives good bacteria time to grow in the filter/gravel etc which will create a much healthier environment for your fish. There is not much good bacteria in water from an established tank but as you already bought the fish its better than nothing! I would have suggested to get some bio balls or some kind of media and put it in Klauss tank for a month or so and then put it into the new tank as that would mean that the new tank is already cycled and ready to go as the bacteria is in the filter ☺️ gorgeous fish though!

katfishd I only cycled my tanks for 1 week :o I'm glad my fish are okay!. I used my old filter cartridge and used gravel though, that probably played a part in my luck.
Callie Desbiens old filter as in it was in another tank with water still or it was dried? If dried the bacteria would have died off cause it would have had no food source from the waste (which is what good bacteria feed on)
katfishd it was from a filled, previously cycled, healthy aquarium lol. If I let them dry up, or when they get really gross I just go buy new ones cause they're so cheap.
If you have an established aquarium, you can have a cycled tank within a day. I setup a 5 gallon for my betta and put her in the next day because I got a handful of filter floss media that hadn't been cleaned in about 2 months. I tested the water the next day and the parameters were on point- and have been to this day. It really all depends on how much media you can provide for the size tank to speed up the process, and how many fish you are adding to the aquarium. Too many fish (even with cycled media) and not enough cycled media for the amount of fish, can result in death of the fish, etc. as the bacteria are having difficulty removing the ammonia, nitrite, and nitrite in a sufficient matter of time.
Hi, Nerite snail eggs will not hatch in freshwater, it has to be brackish water. So in theory, you could have many snails in one freshwater tank and they will not multiply. However it's a great "excuse" to buy another tank and fish so I can't argue with that, lol.

I have this tank & it has been terrific. I've had it for almost a year now. The thermometer is very accurate within 2 degrees. It just took some time for it to actually read. My experience with their heaters however has not been good. I bought their smallest one made for tanks under 3 gallons & it heats the tank up to 90+ degrees even in a 5 gallon bucket test. I use it in the coldest part of winter to keep my daughter's 10 gallon tank warm (75-78) when the room temp is around 65.

I have the 2.5 gallon Top Fin aquarium right now for my betta. I've had him for 2 years! I love my 2.5 gallon tank, but I really want to upgrade to this one! Great video xo
I have the same fish tank! I ended up using a different filter that was quieter, but overall I really like mine. I’ve been using it for two years and no problems!
Hi! I love your tank setup! I’m looking into getting this exact tank and I was wondering if you’ve ever had any issues with leaking or cracking? I’ve never really had a glass tank before considering I’ve only owned acrylics. Thank you!!
my brand new betta got his fins stuck in the filter on this exact tank. just so i don’t kill another fish do you think putting a sponge over the filter will work
I'm not sure what type of snail she has, but pretty much any snail that is big enough that the betta won't attack or eat it is fine! Mystery snails (which are usually apple snails) are pretty common and work well, and have a lot of variety. I would stay away from assassin snails though, on account of them having a diet of only other snails. Hope I could help! :D
I have the 5.5 gallon for my Blonde Delta guppies, and it's a really good tank! It's so interesting to see someone else review the tank use! Because it doesn't have a nighttime light mode, I just have to turn it off at night. Good luck with your tank! :)
i literally have the same tank and the same plants that you have and i almost guy the little wood log with the heart. I did have a batta in the tank but but it died 😭. oh and your not the only one who had a problem with the glue on the side of the tank I was so hard to get off😩
Does your top fin filter put off a lot of bubbles? Also can you explain more how you slowed down the flow, I’m unsure where exactly you added the tape?
What do you mean by not experienced betta owners? Not being mean I'm truly curious. I am an experienced betta keeper and I have the top fin tanks and I love them. Yes I modified the but it's a good little tank. Not tying to start anything.
I just got the five gallon tank i didnt know what i was doing and ur video was the first i saw (even reading the directions) tht explained i have to physically pour water into the filter first and it works perfectly now n its great thank u SO MUCH me n my betta thank u
Love that you are keeping your Betta in the 5g tanks vs little bowl. They will do so much better. Glad that you clerified that you used some of the old filter media. So many think the old tank water has the beneficial bacteria. Instead, it lives on surfaces like filter media, gravel etc. Nice job on the review. Looking for a cheap solution for a quarantine tank.
@Alyssa Nicole- the fact that you knew off barrel to have at least a 5gal tank makes me so 😄 happy😄😄😄!! There are so many TH-camrs that known better and still buy .5- 1.5 gal tanks for betta "demonstration" purposes and it kills me. Bear minimum is 2.5 gals, 5 gal is perfect and anything bigger your betta is swimming in paradise. As a betta curious person I truly thank you for having appropriate sized tanks!!!
Reducing/blocking the flow will allow massive amounts of algae to grow and over run your tank. Also you have to let the tank cycle for more than a few days as the nitrites and ammonia levels can spike and kill your fish. I would recommend safe start when doing water changes along with some stress coat. I would also recommend getting the master water testing kit so you can test the ammonia, nitrates, nitrites, and ph levels in the water.
Alyssa Nicole I’ve had a snail that caught onto a plant I bought reproduced but we just enjoyed watching them grow. However, some of the bottom feeders found them and thought they would make a good snack. So the original snail had grown very quickly and wasn’t bothered by the pakistani loaches at all. In the end the snail died naturally. Btw, I have a tropical tank.
I put my betta in a 5.5 too and hes a happy boy. His name is copia and hes a black crown tail betta. Hes got tons of plants and ornaments and a heater and all. His favorite place is his leaf though. Hes just always so happy to see you, he flaps his little fins at you when he sees you like hes excited you're here. Lol. Love him.
Hi, don’t know if you have by now but it’s a good idea to put something like a piece of paper or a border between the two Betta’s so they don’t feel stressed or threatened by each other xx
I just recently purchased this exact tank for my Betta fish Data and it's Awesome !!! I'm thinking about getting the heater you used. I actually prefer the water to flow wide open because for me it seems to move the water around better for better filtration. Great video by the way.
Thank you ! You did a great job like your tanks your Betta’s are beautiful’ I bought the same tank wanting to add the sponge filter too will ask at the fish store how it’s done for sure I also bought a drift wood piece and some live plants too ‘ I’m just learning soaking my drift wood they say it will not always be a tea color don’t care for that but do like the look 🙋🏼♀️😅🌱🐠
My favorite tank so far is the acrylic Tetra Crescent. It looks bigger than regular 5 gallon tanks (rectangle). The Marineland 5 gallon Portrait is good too but the portrait top to bottom shape looks really small and I think it isn't really 5 gallon available space as the rear compartment has water in it as you fill it up. Might be under 5 gallons. It's a glass aquarium and has sturdy thick glass and hasn't sprung a leak. I really am beginning to like acrylic tanks although supposedly they scratch up....
My thermometer has been in the tank (same thermometer and tank) and it started at eighty and has only gone down a centimeter in 48 hours. Another thing I got the same gravel and I just cut the top pit water and use the net you got to get the water out and keep the rocks then I pour it in is that bad?
i have that same tank currently and the tank is great. I also got that same heater and it kept the tank at 75 degrees Fahrenheit. So i got the aqueon compact 50watt heater and works great.
i don’t believe that you really did put in cycled media, for the pure fact that you said in the video that the water holds the cycle and not the media. to add cycled media to that filter you would’ve had to remove some type of extra pad, bio balls etc you had in your other filter which i doubt you had considering you don’t even really know what a cycled is. i mean, cmon, you told one commenter to replace their filter pad which you should never do... that is throwing away the whole cycle. you just rinse the filter pad in removed tank water every once in a while. you even said you didn’t know if the thermometer went inside or outside the tank... if you do stuff like this, especially making videos which will misinform so many people, own up to your mistakes instead of lying about them. all of us who are really into the fish keep hobby can see the mistakes and lies right out your ass. you even said “inexperienced betta owners” typically buy those tanks... and that’s what we all see you as. you cannot call yourself a seasoned betta owner, please stop misinforming people. there’s already enough people who abuse bettas and keep them in horrible conditions.
jakklex d lmao you clearly don’t know anything abt fish keeping. just because she’s doing things slightly better than the people who keep bettas in bowls doesn’t mean she’s still doing it right. why not go the extra mile to make sure you’re doing it right and literally just do a couple minutes of research??? it doesn’t excuse letting fish get fin rot which she’s said she has, fin rot is caused by bad water quality. You know what causes bad water quality? Uncycled filters and tanks, not enough or correct water changes, and the plants she lets die in her aquariums because she won’t take a couple minutes to research how to have plants in an tank. If she doesn’t want to properly care for the plants, she’s also going to harm the fish with them dying and decaying causing them to lower the water quality. “so stfu”
I know quite a bit actually... but hun, beating someone up isn't going to help her or her fish. get off your high horse. why don't you try telling her what she needs to correct without jumping down her throat and being a snarky brat. grow up.
Actually you’re completely wrong. The good bacteria does not live in the water, it lives in the filter and on hard hard services not in the actual water so putting old tank water in a new tank does absolutely nothing, you’re putting a fish in an uncycled tank. You should have just taken some filter media from the old tank to the new. Do some better research.
Alyssa Nicole I very much doubt you did that until I said it. What reason could you have to not show it in the video or at least say it so your followers don’t make the same rookie mistake and think the good bacteria lives in the water body? Yeah.. makes no sense. Look I’m not hating on you, you seem pretty nice but my concern when I see people making the common mistake you made is for the fish. Adding tank water does nothing. So you saying “leave it an hour to cycle with this old tank water” is utter rubbish. 🤷🏻♀️
Little red you're wrong. I don't know what science class you took but beneficial bacteria actually is in the water. It floats around in the water till it finds a surface to attach itself to. Adding water from an already cycled tank has the bacteria to support a new set up tank. But it is also a good idea to keep cycled media on hand to add to the process BUT you don't have too. And go smoke a joint or something cuz you have a terrible attitude
MrSpeakerguy44 No it doesn’t my guy. I’m sorry but you’re talking absolute shit. If you simply use that clever tool we have called GOOGLE and type in “the nitrogen cycle” you’ll easily find that 90% if the good bacteria lives in the filter and the rest lives on substrate. It does not “float in the water.” Seriously.
I have the same tank the same plants and the same gravel!!!! And think I'm getting a snail too!! There was a sale when I got mine and there was $10 off
Doggoroo yes I do but on the lowest it's a little strong for the betta there is 2 things you can do 1 do the water bottle thing or 2 just fill it up a little more until your satisfied with the flow. There is a spot for a heater too as you probably saw in the video, it's really good tank you should get it. One last thing is on the top of the filter there is this switch thing that when it to read it means that you have to change the cartridge
I have this tank and I used a filter sponge from my fluval edge filter because it fits perfectly at the ‘mouth’ of this filter. I secured it with a rubber band and it slows the flow a lot. I hope this can help someone
first time fish owner. You fill water in the filter. And then you put the filter on the tank and let it hang over the side of the tank. And then I noticed when it’s plugged in, it starts to flow into the tank. Is that going to cause the tank to overfill? How full do I want to fill the tank? I have the same tank you demo’d.
Okay, one more....how do I introduce my Betta to the new tank? I don't have a little plastic dish thing anymore. I know I have to do it slowly and let her adjust just not sure how
I wouldn't use dish sponges they can come with soap in them sometimes . An aquarium sponge on the intake tube can reduce some of the flow along with turning the flow down . I personally think if there's not a good flow the tank won't have much movement to keep it clean .
Do you think it would be good to use the water conditioner and the filter together? Also is it good to use water conditioner and the safe start stuff from the same brand?
To answer your first question, yes! Every time you change the water in your tank, if you're using tap water make sure to always condition it! The filter will help the conditioner do its job and vice verse. You should be fine with your products! Hope I could help! :D
I always take tubing like air tubing cut it to length and slit it then slip it over the bottom of the place you put your tape, it basically killed the flow from my filter so my axolotl can be happy!!
As its months later how do you feel about this tank?! Im looking to start a betta tank (with one for now) and im looking around for a good start tank/kit?!
You are supposed to let the filter run for a while before putting the fish in so there will be enough bacteria. And you also need at least 2inches of substrate at the bottom of the tank
TFS. Just started fish keeping. I have a 20 gallon. I use prime and stability from Seachem and it’s worked really well for me. Maybe you got a bad batch/bottle. Anywho thanks again.
I ended up replacing the HOB filter with a sponge filter and my Betta seems to be much happier with the flow rate. I also got rid of the thermometer because of it’s inaccurate readings.
I got the one gallon tank by the same brand for my Betta, and he loves it. Also, the person I worked with at pet smart said that the heaters shorten the life of a Betta because it makes them reach maturity faster. just a tip. XX
Abby, this is absolutely not true. Bettas are tropical fish, so they should be kept between 78-82 degrees. If fish are kept outside of their temp recommendations, then it can shorten their life span. If they are kept in too low of a temp, it stresses them out, and makes their immune system weak. They will get illnesses more often, shortening their life span. If you keep them too warm, then it does speed up there metabolism, shortening the overall lifespan. Unless you live in a tropical climate, you will need a heater. Also bettas should be kept in a tank that is 2.5 gallons or more. 2.5g is the bare minimum that is considered acceptable. Most serious fish keepers keep them in 5 gallons or more. I personally wouldn’t follow the instructions of a PetCo employee. They rarely give good advice. Sometimes you will find one or two that do know what they are talking about, but this is few and far between.
You might want to check your betas digestion because they can get indigestion if they eat the algae wafers, because they do not process plant based food well.
I just bought this tank :) upgraded my betta from a 1 gallon to a 5.5! I feel like a good human now

I have the 2.5 gallon Top Fin aquarium right now for my betta. I've had him for 2 years! I love my 2.5 gallon tank, but I really want to upgrade to this one! Great video xo
the shirt.....
shook
I got this tank but the 55 gallon one. My soul is now satisfied
Omg u watch Paul Cuffaro too!!! Hes like 17,, lives in Florida,, has ponds and fish.
Bryan Corona no he's 21 !
Bryan Corona I LOVE PAUL
I like Paul caffero me to
Bryan Corona Oh shit, that idiot lives in the same state as me?
@@viviannabaez7601 Why do you say he's an idiot?
I have the same fish tank! I ended up using a different filter that was quieter, but overall I really like mine. I’ve been using it for two years and no problems!
Nice tanks alyssa and you can tell you like your fish a lot. Good job.
Oooo that fish in the octopus tank is rather beautiful. That tank is cute too
Hi! I love your tank setup! I’m looking into getting this exact tank and I was wondering if you’ve ever had any issues with leaking or cracking? I’ve never really had a glass tank before considering I’ve only owned acrylics. Thank you!!
my brand new betta got his fins stuck in the filter on this exact tank. just so i don’t kill another fish do you think putting a sponge over the filter will work
Rachel Timmyyy I didn’t get to see the intake filter on this filter but I’d recommend a sponge intake cover to ski over the intake tube
Darline Reynoso i put a sponge over and it’s working great!
You can always buy a sponge filter instead of a power filter. Safer so the find doesn't get stuck
wait what type of snail is that because i want a snail for my bettas now i didn’t know they could go in together!
I did have a batta in the tank but but it died 😭. oh and your not the only one who had a problem with the glue on the side of the tank I was so hard to get off😩
Trecia Petersen you probably didn’t cycle the tank and that’s why your betta died. please cycle your tanks before you put fish in them people
Does your top fin filter put off a lot of bubbles? Also can you explain more how you slowed down the flow, I’m unsure where exactly you added the tape?
What do you mean by not experienced betta owners? Not being mean I'm truly curious. I am an experienced betta keeper and I have the top fin tanks and I love them. Yes I modified the but it's a good little tank. Not tying to start anything.
I read that the top fin filter sold in that kit has a recall on it for electrifying the water
I just got the five gallon tank i didnt know what i was doing and ur video was the first i saw (even reading the directions) tht explained i have to physically pour water into the filter first and it works perfectly now n its great thank u SO MUCH me n my betta thank u
Omggg shanneeee merch I officially love u 😂
Love that you are keeping your Betta in the 5g tanks vs little bowl. They will do so much better. Glad that you clerified that you used some of the old filter media. So many think the old tank water has the beneficial bacteria. Instead, it lives on surfaces like filter media, gravel etc. Nice job on the review. Looking for a cheap solution for a quarantine tank.
I got betta fish in 15 gallon tank.. :)
Nice!
I love the flute music. It was very cheerful. Your tank looks great and your betta is beautiful.
It’s on sale for $19 at petsmart now lol
oh my god thank you for commenting this! I was looking around some tank kits on petco but it was like 100 dollars
Oh it’s 25 now ;)
@@antimilkpropaganda omg nice, I gotta get that.
@Alyssa Nicole.
1. You are a Shane Fan, Praise that!
2. Paul Cuffaro
3. I love this channel!
With the tape, make sure the glues and plastics are fish safe to avoid any unwanted outcomes
do you know what tape is safe for bettas? i would like to buy this tank but dont know how to slow the flow down.
I have the 10 gallon top fin with a similar filter, if you turn the lever on top of the intake tube, it will slow down your flow.
Ok good vid but why u lickin the box in the thumbnail?
Break Blake she’s not licking it
Loved the video, I am planning on getting a tank next week, how do you cycle your tank I have watched so many videos I am confused.
snails will lay eggs in freshwater, but the eggs won't hatch, they will only hatch in brackish or saltwater
Alyssa Nicole I have about 10 nerite snails in my 30 gallon freshwater that have laid hundreds of eggs and I promise not one of them hatched 😊
Celina Chow I had snails in fresh water and they laid eggs. They all hatched and ended up with FREAKING ONE THOUSAND
RaeAnna's Critters where they nerite though
RaeAnna's Critters omgg what did you do?
Lol. Love him.
Someone likes The vampire Diaries and The Originals. Lol
the black nob on the filter allows you to adjust the flow
Is a 5.5 gallon tank a good size for shrimp 🦐
Dan Rocks Vlogs yes it’s plenty for them
I agree
making sure jelly jar is wide and clean out good. plus not too long.
I would buy this on clearance, otherwise I wouldnt buy it because I already have too many tanks lol
It’s for like 20 bucks at pet smart for the 4th of July sale
elonmusk yeah I got it this year for super cheap!
Hi, don’t know if you have by now but it’s a good idea to put something like a piece of paper or a border between the two Betta’s so they don’t feel stressed or threatened by each other xx
One day you *will* own a zoo
I just recently purchased this exact tank for my Betta fish Data and it's Awesome !!! I'm thinking about getting the heater you used. I actually prefer the water to flow wide open because for me it seems to move the water around better for better filtration. Great video by the way.
Love the shane shirt
Love your makeup❤️
My favorite tank so far is the acrylic Tetra Crescent. It looks bigger than regular 5 gallon tanks (rectangle). The Marineland 5 gallon Portrait is good too but the portrait top to bottom shape looks really small and I think it isn't really 5 gallon available space as the rear compartment has water in it as you fill it up. Might be under 5 gallons. It's a glass aquarium and has sturdy thick glass and hasn't sprung a leak. I really am beginning to like acrylic tanks although supposedly they scratch up....
SHES WEARING A SHANE DAWSON SHIRT
My thermometer has been in the tank (same thermometer and tank) and it started at eighty and has only gone down a centimeter in 48 hours. Another thing I got the same gravel and I just cut the top pit water and use the net you got to get the water out and keep the rocks then I pour it in is that bad?
I love your videos so much! Id love to collab with you sometime!
I never knew Beta Fish needed that much care, I've always seen them in just a small circular "tank" or bowel but this is very interesting
And they're so much happier and active when they get proper care.
Usually people are misinformed and pet stores aren't really good for information. Tbh they need to stop selling fish bowls.
SHANE DAWSON YASSSS
i have that same tank currently and the tank is great. I also got that same heater and it kept the tank at 75 degrees Fahrenheit. So i got the aqueon compact 50watt heater and works great.
Shane Dawson Fans Unite!!! 🤣
They make "stick on the tank", thermometer strips that you just stick to the tank. They work well and can be put on a side to keep out of view.
When you were talking about Infinity War, when u said "I'm finna be shook" you should've mouth-poped (I see that Shane Dawson shirt ;))
i don’t believe that you really did put in cycled media, for the pure fact that you said in the video that the water holds the cycle and not the media. to add cycled media to that filter you would’ve had to remove some type of extra pad, bio balls etc you had in your other filter which i doubt you had considering you don’t even really know what a cycled is. i mean, cmon, you told one commenter to replace their filter pad which you should never do... that is throwing away the whole cycle. you just rinse the filter pad in removed tank water every once in a while. you even said you didn’t know if the thermometer went inside or outside the tank... if you do stuff like this, especially making videos which will misinform so many people, own up to your mistakes instead of lying about them. all of us who are really into the fish keep hobby can see the mistakes and lies right out your ass. you even said “inexperienced betta owners” typically buy those tanks... and that’s what we all see you as. you cannot call yourself a seasoned betta owner, please stop misinforming people. there’s already enough people who abuse bettas and keep them in horrible conditions.
Alyssa Nicole they’re right. You’re misinformed and sharing your wrong information.
it’s a hell of a lot better than 99% of people that own betta fish, that’s for sure lmao. she isn’t abusing her animals so stfu
jakklex d lmao you clearly don’t know anything abt fish keeping. just because she’s doing things slightly better than the people who keep bettas in bowls doesn’t mean she’s still doing it right. why not go the extra mile to make sure you’re doing it right and literally just do a couple minutes of research??? it doesn’t excuse letting fish get fin rot which she’s said she has, fin rot is caused by bad water quality. “so stfu”
I know quite a bit actually... but hun, beating someone up isn't going to help her or her fish. get off your high horse. why don't you try telling her what she needs to correct without jumping down her throat and being a snarky brat. grow up.
jakklex d the thing is, i have. people always jumping to conclusions lmao
Alyssa Nicole yeah ok, love. If you say so.
thank you!!
For whatever reason mine didn’t come with the LED adapter - and the water filter for sure makes it tough for him to swim around properly it seems
I have the same tank the same plants and the same gravel!!!! And think I'm getting a snail too!!
There was a sale when I got mine and there was $10 off
Eliza Harms do you recommend the tank? I'm thinking of getting a betta.
Doggoroo I would send a picture of my tank but I do not know how
Thank you for this awesome video, I was legit struggling with the filter set up cuz I lost my instructions thanks
I have the same tank and I wish the light was brighter. I also have the same gravel and I only used 1 bag.
I believe it’s 2lbs per gallon
Okay, one more....how do I introduce my Betta to the new tank? I don't have a little plastic dish thing anymore. I know I have to do it slowly and let her adjust just not sure how
I wouldn't use dish sponges they can come with soap in them sometimes . An aquarium sponge on the intake tube can reduce some of the flow along with turning the flow down . I personally think if there's not a good flow the tank won't have much movement to keep it clean .
OMG I LOVE THE ORIGINALS I KNEW U WERE GONNA NAME HIM ELIJAH YESSSSSSSS QUEEN
Hey!!! To stop the flow u could try and attache a piece of plastic in the filter... that would help
I had a betta fish before, but I didn’t have a moss ball. This may sound like a stupid question but what do moss balls do exactly?
I always take tubing like air tubing cut it to length and slit it then slip it over the bottom of the place you put your tape, it basically killed the flow from my filter so my axolotl can be happy!!
As its months later how do you feel about this tank?! Im looking to start a betta tank (with one for now) and im looking around for a good start tank/kit?!
You are supposed to let the filter run for a while before putting the fish in so there will be enough bacteria. And you also need at least 2inches of substrate at the bottom of the tank
Where’d you get the octopus for your betta tank?? I’d like to purchase one for my new betta tank
Thanks for this video. I have a question. I bought the same tank but how do I connect the lights? It didn't come with the power supply .
Thanks so much for showing to put water in the filter to get it started. We had no idea and instruction doesn't say it.
