Well Harvard and Yale has produced many world known great leaders and billionaires. Top Chinese universities no doubt are great institutions but I believe they still lose in credentials. China's universities may be more prestigious in the future but now? Anyone would be crazy to choose Peking University over Harvard if they can afford both easily. Chinese Indonesian here.
I support freedom, human right, ect all that, but I don't agree with one person one vote type of democracy. The presidential candidates are not the smartest or most experienced, but rather, the most popular, like a fucking movie star, which DOES NOT HELP to build a strong nation. And what even worse is, some, or should I say most, of the leaders in the democratic world, had no previous experience in leading experience, so they normally make a lot of rookie mistakes, like what GW Bush did with all those non sense policys and wars. In addition, voters are not always that smart either, and the clever ones, only vote the candidate best serve their interests, and that sometimes, conflicts with the best national interest. And when candiate make all those promises during campaigns, they have to keep on promising more and more to his/her voters to gain more vote, this my friend, will eventually put a nation into too much deficit, and lead to inevitable failure. But do I against democracy/freedom? Absolutely not, but I prefer a well rounded, controlled (or should I say monitored) meritocracy, where the leaders are not selected based on their vote, but rather, their past local work experience and achievement (local officials can be elected, because they can make rookie mistakes, it won't hurt the whole country). I still have hope in the Chinese political system, as long as they can have some checks and balances (maybe not all legislative, executive, and judicial, but definately judicial to start with).
It's crazy hearing students at Peking and Tsinghua University saying that they're trying to leave for Canada for graduate school. Sure we have some good schools but thats a terrible sign and shows what students in China think of their toughest, most prestigious schools.
It's because getting into these north american uni is less difficult and because it will give them more job opportunities once they graduate and they both have a tsinghua/pku degree + an american degree.
The only difference is India doesn't have single university which is good at all majors, IITs and IISc is good for science and engineering, simply not good for studying finance or arts, for business studies IIMs are good. for art studies DU , CU are. But I feel the education system is pretty much similar. The movie 3 idiots (三個傻瓜) worked well in China could be a proof of this statement.
Singaporean here. If you do not get into the top 3 universities (NUS ,NTU and SMU), you will be discriminated by employers. So I can really relate to this
Too much pressure there. The students worry about their future too much. It may be a good drive for them to achieve their educational goals and careers, but it becomes a behavior to compete with everyone and everywhere. They always say "Chinese population is big, you can't survive if you don't try hard". They cannot found peace in lives and it is difficult for them to accept "failure". I always tell them "物极必反:keep balance" to convince them to relax. One Chinese model of thinking that I hate most is when there is a problem, they often say "就这样吧,没办法: no way to resolve". Truly, academic potential of Tsinghua and Peking Universities is extremely high, they are not just "super brand". I agree that large portion of governors should be selected from these two university because brains are in need to sail country. I would like to tell China that "your GDP grows fast and how about GNH?"
Pichit Boonkrong Interesting.. I´ve read about the consideration of chinese engineering graduates of being not so innovative than applicants from other regions. I guess this correlates to what you said about pressure. You can´t force creativity and to have good ideas you need to have passion, not only for the money but for the actual job you do. Like they said in the vid there are students which can´t study the course they whish to, and in combination with the high expectaions of success put on their shoulders you get highly educated people, but with less passion. So like you said, they want to push the GDP but the GNH also matters if a country aims to prosper. Things like science and inventions only work with free and relaxed minds. So despite the quality of education i see this whole mindset as a significant brake block to Chinas growth.
Pichit Boonkrong About"物极必反",tense nerve students usually come from poorish background, which had beyond reality high hope for them to succeed. This isn't about right or wrong, this is about reality. About "就这样吧没办法", don't know if you tried to do any procedure with the government. I personally needed to move my Hukou(it's like tax record that can prove you as in state, while in China it's a card and not related to tax), there was no communication at all between 2 city governments and there was no process, no owner, extreme long lines for even letting officials look at the materials. It's not that people don't try, it's just reality.
+computername they have strong prefrontal cortex function. They can do work more efficiently with clearer heads and memorize/spout information back better but their amygdalas are heavily neglected and suppressed. This means their emotional/empathetic, imaginative and creative abilities are minimized. Americans are more relaxed and have better capabilities in the creativity department even though we might be slacking massively in the efficiency and productivity departments.
Yeah, that is true. And not every Chinese student is so ambitious, for example...me^^ .And they are the guys who pass the insanely difficult exams. They are the winners. And it makes sense why they are so competitive and eager to win.
A lot of Americans believe in sex after marriage as well, you simply cannot use cinema to reflect an entire population's attitude towards sex, I'm sure in China there are a considerable amount of people who also have sex before marriage as well, but among the more religious people in America believe they should wait after marriage and this attitude is not entirely among the religious either.
all chinese people love trading no matter they are degree holders or average people....as i can say all chinese want to be enterpreneur in chinese society, people respect u if u run the bussiness n employ many workers to raise people economy n prosperity
"...Zhao quotes Zheng Yefu, a professor at Peking University and the author of a popular book in 2013 titled The Pathology of Chinese Education, who wrote: No one, after 12 years of Chinese education, has any chance to receive a Nobel prize, even if he or she went to Harvard, Yale, Oxford or Cambridge for college…. Out of the one billion people who have been educated in Mainland China since 1949, there has been no Nobel prize winner…. This forcefully testifies [to] the power of education in destroying creativity on behalf of the [Chinese] society...." www.nybooks.com/articles/2014/11/20/myth-chinese-super-schools/
there is something wrong with our universities ....even a single in top 100 I feel very sad but I don't know reason ....perhaps our students don't know importance of education .😥😥😥 jobs r everything in India because of lacks of sports and art 😥😥😥 I m feeling so sad 😥😥😥 .
The double-sided of their perspectives on America is quite interesting. They seem rely heavily on American education. Above all, the majority of the outstanding Chinese students seem quite so serious about their future to me. Youth is never coming back. Enjoy studying! I wish they focused on not just themselves achieving career success but the others in need.
Damn some of these kids have literally no accent, what. the. fuck? LOL I'm french and I have been speaking English for 16 years and I still have a fucking accent...
+Vincent Deschenes One of them applied to Harvard and Yale and I would not be surprised if some of the others applied to elite overseas universities as well. They are most likely of the upper class with a lot of private tutoring during schoolwork.
Anggel Lopezz same here... I just did all my highschool finals which account for a third of my overall GPA without studying... so much wasted potential :D luckily for me I want to study Computer Science and for that major I can choose whichever university I want to so my grades don't matter ^^ go Germany xD
why do western video makers always prefer to take lots of Chinese old people in their pictures. I think it will produce much misleading effect. Actually, we all know it's not the truth. we want to see more Chinese young people, and they should be the main stream of Chinese society. Don't always use the biased video to deceive the audiences.
I dearly wish the optimism these students have resembled the reality of China, but it doesn't. China has been backsliding in recent years as far as human rights, rule of law, and free speech go. It's really sad.
I went To Shanghai n Beijing , very modern cities, people are very educated, some of them are shy to talk, the zoo wasnt that great, chinese opera very good, expensive western buffets but was very good food, the bullet train was very fast , i just noticed that when people cough didnt cover their mouth, not good manners. Facebook/youtube r blocked , u cant access them, but i know how to get around it.

the Nobel Prize thing has something to do with the individual creativity, but the lab traditions and scholarship environment are also important, which has everything to do with the history.
what is the Nobel Peace Prize exactly - it doesnt meant much to be honest. I would be proud of the traditions China has - the USA and other western countries could learn a lot from China to be honest.
"Gossip Girl" "Desperate Housewives" "America's Got Talent" "Big Bang Theory" "Friends" Oof. Those Chinese sure have poor taste in American television shows. Very commendable views on sexual relations, however.
i am exceptionally impressed by their english. clearly, even though opportunities aren't AS good, they can match up to the ivies in america.
Great video. Enjoyed hearing their perspective on life. Thanks for sharing this video with us.
They speak English pretty well.
Amazing video and they are speaking in what is to them a foreign language.
They idealised the United States way too much

@@nsebast at least now Tsinghua ranked above Yale, it has improved a lot since then... Ngomong2 kuliah di mana?
@Jack Lee why?
Yeah, like all American students can get their first choice and get into medical or law school.

You guys are the hope of China. Your thoughts and actions represent the nation. Compare you guys' taking and the students in Harvard. I feel HOPLESS.
Very similar to the Indian education system :D
