Dexter, thank you for sharing your experience with these beautiful people. I was in Luzon during the mid 1970’s serving in the US Navy. I also traveled to San Jose, Samar, Visayas. I was adopted by a kind elderly Philippine couple I met in Olongapo who treated me like their long lost son. We, Mamay, Papay, and their three children became best of friends. I came to love the Philippine people who are the kindest people I’ve ever met. I miss the beautiful Philippine Islands and the people. I’ve thought often of spending my remaining years of life there. I found them very dignified; they will labor for what they need. The boat I was taking stopped at Zamboanga city pier. As usual, Bajau boys (and girls) in lepa-lepa asked me to toss coins into the water for them to show their skills in retrieving them. I signaled that I prefer to hand my coins instead of tossing them into the water. They refused to accept it unless I tossed them into the water; that impressed me. I once saw a Bajau couple in Surigao City pier; the hardship of life is really etched on their faces which broke my heart. They appreciated whatever food items handed to them by some passengers. They need more than handouts; they need attention of everybody especially the government and help them in every way possible. Thanks for showing their flight.

Puro punta rito sa Manila para lang manlimos. Marami rin namang mga kapos sa buhay at namumuhay sa mga liblib na lugar ang nakakapag-aral, gaya ng lugar namin sa Gandara, Samar. Noon, pagsasaka lang at pagiging GRO dito sa Manila ang ikinabubuhay nila, ngayon halos lahat na ng mga bata ay mga estudyante.

Pagka alam ko sa mga tribu ng Muslim, ang mga Badjao ang isa sa peace loving tribe talaga. Hindi silla warlike na grupo. Kaya di rin sila makasundo ng mga Tausug dahil mas pinipili nila mamuhay ng tahimik. Saka maganda ang relationship nila sa nga Christians kahit saan. Marami na rin yata sa kanila ang naging Christian.

Thanks for this, Dexter. I've always been intrigued by these Badjao tribes. I only encountered them in places like Manila and Cebu doing "nag limos" on the streets.
It's good to get a good glimpse of their actual culture.
By the way, 1K pesos per day is decent living over there, to be honest.

While we need to respect their tradition, we should not tolerate their backward way of life. They should not force their kids to work or beg for money in the street. Govt has to intervene and improve their way of living. Badjao youth should be educated so once they grow up, they can uplift their unique and beautiful culture. No member of the IP community should be begging in the street.
I strongly agree. These group of people were left out as the government focused so much on tangible projects that's visible as accomplishments in preparation for the next election.

i think you need to read about their history for you to understand, read CCP Encyclopedia 2019 vol.3, excuse me but i want to correct you in that you also need to research about the the cycle of poverty so that, aside from judging them you lead to a conclusion on why and how they became.

Embcii Bee My mother is from Leyte and their life is close to these Badjao's. Actually, my mom shared that they always eat seafoods. Not just those normal seafoods but they have those exotic ones. Example is the black thick worms that have weird and creepy mouths. My mom said those worms make you horny if you eat them. So, maybe it is BC of what they eat.
