Not true. The Memphis rapper Al Kapone was on set showing him how to move and talk and 3-6 mafia visited as well. It’s an exaggerated take on some but not all people from the area. RIP to the legend, Mr. Issac Hayes. His being in the film was a nod to the first wave of popular black music out of Memphis thru Stax Records.
What I love about this movie that I am not sure if you caught is that he DID NOT know Skinny. He hustled everybody to get a chance to talk to him and give him his demo! He literally hustled his way to the top!
Yeah, D Jay explained that he didn’t know Skinny Black when he spoke to Key at the end from prison. He gave the whole analogy about lying to Sug’s daughter about if she can become president (which based on her background, probably not). He said he will lie because sometimes that’s what you have to do. Everyone involved in helping him, he couldn’t let down by actually telling them that he didn’t actually know Skinny Black. I didn’t catch that the first few times I saw this movie.

What I love about the ending .. is the look as he walks away from the two guards who recognized him. The look almost comes across like it was ALL A PART of his PLAN. That he even went back home knowing the cops would get him. He got his street cred creating a beef with a popular rapper. Very Machiavellian . So cool.

Dj represents so many underground Memphis rappers right now and from the past. Thanx for reintroducing this movie back to the people who has seen it and the ones who hasn’t. We memphis people have so much pride and we represent our city to the fullest. Thanx for taking the time to watch it.

"All you gotta do is say sorry." Actually, there's a key line when DJay is kicking Lexie out. She says "put this b**ch in her place." She wanted to get beat. The actress said this surprised her when she did research for the role. She said many of these girls wanted to be treated like that. I think this is subtly symbolic. Djay letting her go, especially as the money maker, is him leaving that life behind and going towards his dream. The other girls are like his family.
The director originally had a goal of doing 5 movies, each focusing on one of the 5 main types of music in Tennessee. This was his hip hop movie. Black Snake Moan was his blues movie. If you guys haven't seen that yet, I HIGHLY recommend it. It had some of the worst marketing in history, but it's a beautiful, powerful film.

Such a good movie. If I remember correctly, either the whole group or one of the members of Three Six Mafia were on set helping Howard develop a flow and wrote the lyrics. On the soundtrack, it is actually Howard performing the songs and the actress who sings the hook, "Hard out here for a pimp..." is really singing it.
