Lila Iké: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 30 ก.ย. 2024
- The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
Rising reggae star Lila Iké has an all-encompassing vibe, and you can feel it in this Tiny Desk (home) concert. Lila and her crew of musicians outfitted a home in Jamaica for this video, and the layout resembles the Tiny Desk's home in Washington, D.C. I was thrilled to see that Lila performed her hit single "I Spy" for this quarantine concert; it's full of the flair I've been missing the last several months. Lila's vocal agility can bend notes and transcend genres, the kind of voice that makes you want to turn to your friend at a show and say "Is she for real??" On "Solitude," she blends avant-garde R&B with contemporary reggae in a hauntingly elegant song complemented by violinist Sean "Ziah" Roberts. "Thy Will" (which borrows from the iconic reggae rhythm section Sly & Robbie) ends the set with an uptempo banger. I hope these vibes have a lasting effect and provide a tropical respite during the fall and winter months.
SET LIST
"Solitude"
"I Spy"
"Forget Me"
"Thy Will"

How do you love rap when rap doesn’t love you back? From Rico Nasty’s harassment from toxic Carti fans, to Saucy Santana's unapologetically femme aesthetics in a queerphobic industry, to the assault case that put Megan Thee Stallion’s entire image on trial, each episode of Louder Than A Riot - the second season of our investigative hip-hop podcast - unpacks the unspoken rules of rap that hold the entire culture back. Tap in to our first episode at n.pr/louder-season-2.

Well said. Another way: if someone made something - not for you - and called it yours, would you call it yours? Why?

Lila Ike has natural talent that is really on a different level. The band, the mood and vibe is unbeatable.
I really like the new school of Jamaican female artists. Their sound is so fresh and refreshing, especially this one, Lila Ike. Her style is not flashy, but it's the natural look and her great singing style voice which makes her so amazing. I expect huge things from her.

Got a chance to catch Michael Kiwanuke a few years back - even though I don't listen to mainstream radio, I SO appreciate Tiny Desk series for the chance to catch recent generations of PHENOmenal musicians of color I'd not likely ever hear. This young artist nails it!
Yes, yes. You are right. There is some seriously good talent stirring up jamaica right now....
jamaica big for music
Again thank you NPR for exposure to such a vast array of artists and music! Love this - thank you Lila!

It was the intro for ME 😬 oh Gosh 👌🏾
Pretty sure Bill Gates is already giving you plenty
Solitude is the ultimate quarantine jam when you're an introvert that hasn't been alone in almost a year ;(
You are strange introvert in such case. Introvert should like to be alone, right? So, I don't get Your sad emoji. Are You sad because You couldn't be alone for a year before? )
I'm an introvert and I haven't been able to be alone stuck in the house with my family. I love them, but there is no "me time" right now... it's feels like Im "always on" bcuz everybody is around. I miss the kids being at school and husband at work. I even appreciate the alone time I had during my work commute now... I totally understand. But we're well and safe so I don't complain. A ride to the grocery is now an experience for me lol 😅
The locs, fro, bantu knot, and a touch of Violin got me holding a whole VIBE.. AYEEE
Locs sister say locs, as the word dreads is derived from the word dreadful. I’m sure you agree with the fact that everything about this video is beautiful and heavenly. Stay bless sister, jah bless ✊🏾

Ms. Lila has the best voice I’ve heard in a while seriously, her slung forget me helped me thru a hard time. Her voice has so much souls, and range it’s epic to hear 👂🏾
If you’re watching this as a Jamaican and not be proud something wrong with you. Props to Lila for doing her thing and keeping it authentic

Moziah is also a great vocalist. Bout time the world get to know him.
Reliatening… getting goosebumps… Lila Ike is a trailblazer… what she went through is rough… but she was chosen to break down certain mental barriers of Jamaicans… welcome to the 21st century… love and mad respect to Lila… and all sentient beings ✨🙏✨♥️✨🏆✨
Best reggae performance on TD till now. Chronix, Koffee, Black Uhuru, seen some here. She's the first one to make reggae music Vocalist shine like it should at this level ✨ Respect

@Arnaud Gales Agreed!
Protoje brought her to the UK several years ago,I saw her in Bristol she was unknown at the time instantly you knew this girl was different.Tenderly brought through by genius Protoje, In the 37 yrs I’ve been avidly following Reggae,I’ve never seen a female artist emerge as good as Lila.Potentialy she’s Icon class .❤️🇯🇲🎤🇯🇲✊🏿🇬🇳
Absolutely Agree! Yeah!
I agree also! She has the potential to be a massive star.
I can’t wait to see her progression. I have high hopes. I think we haven’t seen anything yet!!! 💯 She might have to pivot out of that roots & culture niche I think, but we’ll see 😁
Nice development
Reminds me of some lovers rock sounds on Capital Radio years ago
Wow! Tiny desk has done an incredible job The finding these amazing artists. I am so tired of main stream and most of my playlist consists of artists that I’ve discovered watching tiny desk.
This Queen's a star in my book so many great tunes wow and pretty wow 😊
WHAT A Performance Ms. Lila!!! I'm back for the 10th time for the inspiration and the Entire Vibe. You take me Away! Brilliant Set!!!
The level of conscious and diverse talent coming out of Jamaica right now Far surpasses anything from U.S. & U.K.
Protoje, Sevana, Lila, Naomi, Chronixx, Mortimer and many talented musicians/producers are youths that are musically Miles Ahead
of the entire World music industry right now. Watch them Rule for the next 20 years!
She looks like Ari Lennox, loving this brown skin Queen vibe takeover!
Well tell me why I got goosebumps just when she said “peace of mind”?
The minimalist parts really support the vocals really well, and then when it builds up, it really enforces it.
what style of music would this be categorized as?
This is Reggae ❤️💚💛
This is my happy place music! I don’t think people realize the way music can take over the body and make it feel, groove, express in all ways.
This sounds delicious to my ears. Her voice never disappoints

This is an EXCELLENT concert and this singer has a purely beautiful voice.
I like to listen to music that is positive and inspirational.
Ive found her voice to be hauntingly beautiful from the moment she popped on the scene. By hook or crook, I will get her to Vegas for a stage show when the world opens up back...Yard. stan up!

Lila lke proves why she is one of the most exciting new female Reggae artist on the rise. I got Solitude on constant rotation. 'Thy will' on Sly & Robbie's classic Baltimore Riddim is on fire. Great live set. NPR does it again.
My brain melted on "Forget Me" Violin was on point.
The shorts and the fro.... for a second I thought it was Betty Davis. Really enjoyed this, lovely voice, love the backing singers.
Could just roll along with this all day long ... and her voice is incredible.
