The operatic styled vocalisation on the long tones at the ends of the phrases - KILLS IT !

do you have the clip where Bernstein criticises Carreras for his pronunciation of "playing" (plying) and "praying" (prying)? This seems to have been edited out of the official DVD version.

But it wasn’t Bernstein but his sound engineers “ John please don’t do this! Please don’t give elocution lessons over the 🎤 “

Not sure exactly, but I'm pretty sure he was recovering from a jaw infection so it might be to do with that

probably a throat lozenge, singers use them a lot. He walks away chewing or sucking on it, so it was probably a lozenge, candy or toffee I'd bet. He's sucking on it while he rests his throat in the next scene.

Bernstein was great, but a divo. Carreras was and is great. Respect.

Rushing, dragging, accented notes, he is very early in spots and is over compensating in others

I'm not a fan of the operatic style of singing for this musical. I find that it clashes with the whole idea of two kids from New York. The movie could have had some better singers. Something in between would have been nice.

i really like his voice, it is a shame his accent gets in the way with some or the pronunciation. i give him major props though for his patience and controlling his anger because Bernstein would have had me furious scolding and talking down to me like this. ive watched this whole thing before and this guy is the ONLY person on the whole thing that he does this to and he does it to this guy over and over on all the songs he sings. and the story i hear is they had to get rid of the guy that was going to originally sing it so he came in at the last minute and didnt have all the rehearsal the rest of the cast for this recording had. but seriously i get pissed off watching it, watching this stranger get publicly reprimanded over and over gets me irritated, i cant imagine how he must feel.

Was the first correction regarding looking at the music instead of the maestro? Next take, looks straight down a the paper..

That makes a lot of sense, and so there's a chance that this wasn't Bernsteins ideal choice vocally but he just had to put up with it and it probably frustrated him. But when you're conducing that big orchestra in a recording session ALL eyes are on you. It's alot of pressure, trust me. I don't blame him for being harsh, and arguably mean BUT it's big budget short timeframe and he needs to get it done and done RIGHT. At the end of the day, that's the way the job goes sometimes. And all the people in that room will have the thick skin and the patience to take the heat, its showbiz.

This was uncomfortable to watch. The singer has a very nice voice, but he is clearly out of his element and is not "locked in" because he has his head buried in the score (pitch is mostly there, but tempo/phrasing is all over the place). Bernstein's frustration with this is palpable..."look at ME!" (That orchestra is superb, btw)

  • @oldtimedrumcorps

His pitch appears to be all over the place hes forcing and rushing and his diction and accent doesnt help, just sayin '. He needs to lay off the espresso
