Since I never turned in the required paperwork to make this ride official, yeah it would’ve been cool to take my time. Hope you do it one day. Cheers 🍻
Always best to do this kind of ride starting super early, at, maybe 2 or 3 in the morning. That way, if you stop for breakfast at 10, you've already got 8 or 9 hours of riding behind you, you're probably halfway or beyond, and you've still got eight hours of sunshine, depending on season and latitude.
I just watched your prep video so I wanted to see your recording of the trip itself. It appears that you rode solo instead of going with a buddy. I was glad to hear that you went a day later than planned so you could get a good night of sleep. Good video and good music. Thanks for posting this. Safe travels!
Thanks for the comment Carl. Yeah he had something come up and that guy ended up riding all the way from Alaska to Florida a couple months later. Huge ride! I didn’t mind riding alone. I prefer that most of the time anyway. Wouldn’t have minded the company.
I really enjoyed this video. I just moved to Jax and got a Street Bob. I’m excited to do this route. But not in one day (without a windshield). Well done 👍sir.
Nice video. Did a good portion of that route for a Bun Burner Gold (1500 miles in 24 hours) from Philadelphia down to Alligator Alley across then up to Tampa. Family is in Tampa area. Chuckled at the stuff that went wrong. Same things happened to me. Last leg had to cross the Sunshine Skyway bridge in dense fog after midnight. Congrats on the ride.
congratulations. I am planning on trying it in 3 or 4 months. I spent a year not being able to ride, so i am trying to get ready for it now. I have to do it in between my dialysis days. I will be doing it on my 1600 Vulcan. I live in north central Florida, so your map will be a great help. Thanks for a fun video. hope the best for you.
Hell yeah! I used to ride an 883 all over the southwest. Didn’t bother me at all back then. Most I ever rode on that one in one day was 700 miles. Could’ve easily done 1000. Stay safe
Great video, I'm planning my first Iron Butt anytime in the near future when my shift work and the weather cooperate here in northern Minnesota. Congrats on completing the SS1000!
My wife and I are buying a house in Spring Hill within the next 6 months and this is one of the first rides I plan on doing once we move in and get settled.
Congratulations on completing the ride. Hopefully all your corner receipts are good. Now comes the really hard part, submitting the paperwork and waiting. I completed a ride around Lake Superior last August. Submitted the paperwork via e-mail. You get one confirmation e-mail of the forms received. Then the silent period begins. It can take 2-3 months for you to receive the request for payment. Once you submit your payment things move along pretty quickly. Remember you are now in a holding pattern.
I've ridden several times over 800 or 900 miles within a 24 hour period. In each case I could have planned my trip for 1000+ and gotten the receipts and witnesses, but I never know where I'm going or when I want to stop. I just came back from the Tail of the Dragon where my brother and I put on 2800 miles. I enjoy long rides.
Long rides are about all I enjoy these days. In town commutes are more of a pain in the ass than anything. I’ve never even turned in any of the shit for the official award. Not sure if I ever will
Awesome stuff buddy, and great you got to see some of the Daytona Bike Week too. Really nice edit, and I loved the music. Def inspiring me to do one. The trouble is the rules as they will use the shortest route and that means motorways which can be horrifically boring on a motorbike even if they are easy to burn miles quickly. I can do pretty much bang on the miles from Brighton up to a loch in Scotland and back on the motorway but it wouldn't really be much to see on the ride. (I used to do pretty much the same route every weekend when I was based there in the Royal Navy in my car) so am thinking it might be cooler to try and do the 1000miles avoiding motorways etc, it'll mean I'll not be able to get the certificate, but being an ex submariner am used to not getting the medals or glory! :D Thanks so much for sharing this and hopefully giving me the inspiration to give it a go in some form myself too! :-)
Man I hope you do get it going! I was excited for it, dreading it, and scared of it all at the same time. When I didn't feel safe on Thursday because of my lack of sleep, I was actually thankful for a little while. Once the miles started to burn, it really wasn't that difficult. I was on some pretty boring highways most of the time as well. Lots of really straight interstate and full of cars. I've had that bike since last June. Hadn't had one since 2014 when i sold my last one to help fund our move. I really got a good connection with her on this trip and i'm thankful for that. She glides like butter down the road. For routes, it's kind of good that I stopped as often as I did. For the certification, you need receipts to verify fuel, turning points, etc. I have many receipts with addresses. So even when they do put them in a mapping program, the shortest distance will still be well over 1k.
Congratulations on completing the SS 1000. I did the SS 1000 and the BB 1500 in the same year. The BB1500 was the harder of the two. I did the 1500 in 28 hours.
Hey there. Thanks for the view. In tis video, I used Premiere pro for the video editing, and after effects to draw the map line. I just downloaded davinci resolve and going to give that a go for free.
Mike, thanks for sharing. Your commentary is exactly what we “wanna-be” iron butters want to hear. Choice of editing software (overlapping video) was so cool. Many thanks. Btw, what software as we other amateur moto vloggers want to know.
i need to get back up to milage... been meaning to do the lap of florida... but going to structure it as a bbg 1500 that could do the whole... but its been 5+ years since my two 1000s....
I've done iron butt rides on both. Did the Goldwing back in April. Hard to say really. That road glide was surprisingly comfortable. Especially in the foot position. I never felt like I needed to move on that bike. But the wing is more comfortable just about everywhere else.
I was pleasantly surprised at how I maintained relative comfort the whole way. I was worried about the seat because the previous owner had some padding removed to lower it a bit. Didn't bother me at all.
Thanks for watching. It’s a 2011 road glide custom. The seat is the stock seat that the previous owner shaved down a bit to lower the profile. I wanted a back rest the whole time
@@UncleBogator Thanks, I have a backrest and it really helps, but I need a seat that won't make the tailbone sore after a couple hours. Can ease the strain a bit by pushing back on backrest to get pressure off.
Wow. I'm in the early stages of planning an SS1000, also from Tampa. I automatically aimed north on I75/95 to South Carolina. Maybe I should rethink...your route looks at least as good as mine, keeps the advantage of one time zone, and stays in Florida. I'm planning on doing this before the end of the year, when it's cool (although hopefully not in the 30s!)
I liked my route. I was looking at a to and back type run at first but then I figured I’d be looking at the same thing twice. This route at least gave me a different view the whole time.
Just want to say thanks for posting I also live in South Florida most the time really boring boring writing do a lot of long distance driving have no interest in thousand Miles 24 hours just to each his own you did good
Thanks a ton! I used adobe after effects. It wasn’t too difficult to do. Officially? Well I did all the paperwork, got receipts where required. But I never sent it in.
@@ronwilliams8222 oh. No I just routed it out on Google maps and used location history to verify. But I never submitted the paperwork after I did it. Just a personal win I guess. I did all the required receipts and signatures. Just didn’t send it in.
I don't think my setup is the way to go personally. I constantly have audio issues which is why I don't talk much at higher speeds. When I do, I have a lot of editing to do on it. I use GoPro hero 6 and a very cheap mic off Amazon currently. I've tried various mics in different price ranges and I have the same audio issues. Helmet is an AGV. Not sure the model number on it. I'm awful at this lol
Did you figure out how much "not riding" time you spent on the trip? I'm starting to plan the details (start time, stop time, avoid the worst of rush hours). The other detail is apparently some riders take time for a cat nap. Thoughts?
Since I knew I had 24 hours, I took my time. I stopped 15 times total. Some were required to show where I turned, some were just because my butt was tired. I spent about 15 minutes stopped each time. Took me just over 20 hours doing it that way. Could’ve done it faster but why?
You did not trace the state of Florida. You missed the 200 miles in the Central Time Zone. Panama City, Destin, Fort Walton Beach, Navarre and Pensacola. You could have ridden US98 across the north Gulf coast and FL4 across the Alabama border. US90 or FL20 across the middle of the panhandle and stayed off Interstate 10.
You have great outlook on life bro, I feel privileged that you share it with us👍
I was freezing my butt off that morning haha. Thanks for coming along
What a cool idea. I live in the Ocala National Forest. Would love to ride this one day but maybe take a few days to do it. Nicely done 🙂 - Amy
Since I never turned in the required paperwork to make this ride official, yeah it would’ve been cool to take my time. Hope you do it one day. Cheers 🍻
Plain and simple you did good congratulations
Appreciate it my man
That was pretty fun to watch - I liked the transparent map in the background, that was pretty a pretty cool effect.
Hey thanks man. It took me a couple hours to even figure out how to make that piece.
I like what you did with the map in the backround cool trick!!!
Great video! Very enjoyable!! It’s most fun when we can see your bike.

Post COVID Mike needs to ride the King this route again.
Wouldn’t mind it. Or another iron butt
I really enjoyed your video. I'm planning my first Iron butt this year. I like seeing how others do on the trip and the tips given. Congrats!!
Thanks for stopping by. I watched a bunch before mine too. I still haven’t sent in the paperwork. Not even sure I’m going to
Good job! Done several ironbutts and it's the hardest thing I ever loved.
Thanks! I had a really good time. It opened the door for me to do a few other long rides since then as well.
There is steam comming off your head first thing in the morming . Awesome ride !
Haha yeah I noticed that when I was editing. It was colder than I would have liked that day. It was a fun ride.
Great video thanks for sharing and congrats on the saddle sore 1000

I’m going to circumnavigate Florida in a couple weeks but on a Sportster! After riding from Nebraska and camping Key West!

1k miles/24 hours myself. Seattle, WA. to Bakersfield CA. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for stopping by. How did it go?
Nice job on the video and good ride! Thanks!
Thanks Rich!
