It was written about visitors experiences to Derby in England and was meant as a satire on how good Derby people thought Derby was. Derby is in the middle of England and can not be further from the sea. People seem to think it is a shanty due to the Computer game 'Assains creed: Black flag'. It just shows you cannot trust video games to be factual.
Nice version of this song but let's clear this up. This song is not a sea shanty. Shanties were work songs with basic load-pulling rhythms. There may well have been men and women from Derby who went to sea decades ago who took this traditional song with them and sang it during their scant leisure time. Derby however is possibly the most land-locked town in England, nowhere near the sea, and with minimal maritime heritage. Derby was famous for sheep farming, hence the boastful lyrics, and later silk making, metal working and railway works. In more recent times Derby has seen the manufacture of Rolls-Royce cars and aero engines. Brian Clough led Derby County to the top flight of football in the 1970's.
