About once a month, I clear two hours from my day and listen to The Wall, front to back. What a piece of art! I did this with my sons, who are 17 and 14 and are hooked on ITunes -- I tell them, "You buy this song and that song by an artist, and you COMPLETELY miss the artist's encompassed work on that song, and how it exists on THAT album/CD, at that stage in the artist's career. After they heard The Wall, front to back, they began to understand why we call certain 60s-70s rockers "artists."
I remember this performance. I watched it on tv on a saturday night. I'm guessing 73-74 I was about 14 and I was hooked to 70s rock. This kicks ass baby!
... and they still attract many UK and European fans. I went to Newcastle and Sheffield last time, the time before that, Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow. Three of the best musicians on the planet ... and they come with a free sense of humour!
I was maybe 14. It was a Saturday night and Don Kirshner's Rock Concert came on. Rush came on and I know not a soul in the USA knew who they were. There I sat mesmerized. I will always think of the first 2 as the best Rush. This is the recording I saw.
RUSH is the hall of fame. Non conformists. Unique artful sound. Longevity and the greatest fans who have had Rush all to them self's for so long. Thats legend.
"Finding My Way" and "In The Mood" are two of the best, and most underrated, Rush songs of their early career. "Working Man" and "Fly By Night" get all the glory ... but these two -- they ROCK. Simple as that.
Love this, I wish somebody could produce a complete package of some old school Rush like this, to bad Rush never recorded some good versions concerts like this, man do I love Rush!!!
Every single band needs to go on their knees and hail the best band ever. They also need to take tips because u have the best drummer, best bassist, and and one of rocks most underrated guitarists. Either than that RUSH RULES!!!!!!!
Its treasures like this that make me glad TH-cam exists. Wish Rush wouldnt keep all the old stuff under lock and key :) Thanks so much for posting this.
Amazing!!! Vocal, drums, bass, guitar, performance, everything! No dout: one of the best of the world bands!( Assombroso!!! Vocal, bateria, guitarra, apresentação, tudo! Sem dúvida: uma das melhores bandas mundiais!).Canadian music!
John Rutsy did play on this album, but Peart replaced him in the band shortly after. That is "The Professor" that you see playing. Great song and album. This video is a gem!
Considering the fcat that for years Geddy couldn't read music, didn't know what "keys" were and still played so intuitively and sang such absurbly great stuff it is a total marvel. Alex was an amputee for style inthe early days and became what he is through sheer hard work and perservance. Neil was always Neil - f*cking amazing at 17 in The Majority and JR Flood. After 40 years knowing these guys I never miss a chance to praise 'em. Talented, gutsy, friendly and loving. Respectable humans
What I love dearest about this song is that were obviously a bit Zeppy and they are singing about finding their way; which lets face it no one could argue they certainly did...
I'm not wild about prog rock, though Rush do it as well as it can be done. This song is not prog rock, but one of the few early Rush tracks which show that they might otherwise have been one of the greatest kick-ass Rock&Roll bands ever, and this great footage shows that they could seriously cut it live without the need of a load of studio knob twiddling. For me Rush ARE the fabulous 3-piece Rock and Roll band you see on this video....and that IS one of the greatest Rock and Roll bands ever!
It is definitely Neil playing on the drums. Bytor123 and TheEd78 both say it is 1974, so it must be in the later half of that year (after July) as John was drumming with them while they were supporting Kiss touring Canada in the mid 1974. Notice the camera in the shots, perhaps this was some TV appearance - hence the lovely suit Geddy wears :-) Raz
the was filmed before caress of steel. notice neil dosent have any toms to his left. this i no doubt sometime between the rush and fly by night albums. love this early footage. thanx for posting it.
O hell yeah. that first album Rush for sure has heavy zeppelin influence. then when Peart came they had their own definate sound that would become the one we all know and love. even tho i love the album Rush too
Don't forget Canadian bacon. Oh! That movie too about America and Canada in some kind of proxy war or some shit. What was it called? Oh yes! Here it is. Canadian Bacon.
that's super that you got in free dude, but the R30 tour was over 3 years ago, and it f'n rocked. The new tour is for Snakes and Arrows, their new album, and it just ended about 2 weeks ago. I saw them about 3 months ago and they were amazing, as usual. And be lucky they dont charge $150 a ticket , like a lot of bands of their status do.
Geddy and the 4001 Ric...I wonder how much you could get a brand new one for back in 1974. $1500 - $1600 for a 4003 these days. Still a great instrument, but those 4001's are highly coveted collectibles in large part to the talents of the time who were exclusively playing that particular model: Chris Squire. Paul McCartney, wielding the 4001c64s. My main man Geddy up there. He's played Fender, Ric, Wal,Steinberger - but his '72 Fender Jazz just crushes with that larger than life growl. w00t?
I'm a huge Rush fan and a early film lover. Mary Pickford is from Toronto. So is Alex Lifeson. They look like they could be related, but Alex's folks, like Geddy Lee's were immigrants after WW II. Had I not seen the Rush movie, 'Beyond The Lighted Stage' I would go on thinking these erroneous thoughts. Now there is yet one more good reason to have made a movie about Rush. See? Rock on!
@lbarto88 John was canned in July of '74 after the album was released. This Don Kirshner Rock Concert performance was taped in October of that year with Neil.
Thats for sure Neal playing. I have never seen any vids with John playing. John left shortly after recording the first album due to sickness. I have seen RUSH 12 times live and the drumming style in this vid is Neal.
Wow...first time seeing or hearing this song and been a fan for many years. Really sick stuff...closest I've heard Rush come to playing a funk song (baseline)..anyone feel the same?
I'm a geddy man, to be honest. I started this project of learning every song on bass by him starting with this one. I noticed he started incorporating a fast run in his -style- here. On the record, it's simple and melodic. Listen to how peart and ged sync up at 0:30 !!!
"Very zeppelinesque" Yes, thats bang on the money. The Rush "Chronicles" album mentions this when referring to this very song. Led Zeppelin must have been one of their influences at this stage of their careers. And thats perfectly natural and understandable.
yup that's neil peart although finding my way was 1st recorded w/ john rutsey. rutsey left due to diabetes, he died last year on may 11 due to a heart attack because of complications of diabetes.
It's Neil. Rutsey was the drummer on the album, but left for "health reasons." Neil toured for this album and has ever since 1974. Dunbar never played for Rush.
Once I was watching Rush and a guy was sitting on the edge of the 5ft stage. A huge roadie dashed on and flung him off. Turned out he'd come in a wheelchair and his mates had lifted him up there to see better. Credit to the band tho, I saw Geddy and Alex talking to him backstage during the drum solo to see if he was OK.
You are right--- everyone was influenced by someone, that is how it starts as a kid. RUSH was influenced by the blues legends as were Zeppelin, Stones, Jimy... etc. I love the Zep influence and the blues as well as other styles. Like music math: B+Z x talent (9) = RUSH.
From what I see of Neil in this early clip is so similar to Carl Palmer. I find it interesting Neil now says over and over he was more of a student of the drummers of Tull.

This video has everything that modern day music lacks.
Talent, and Canadians.
Little did they know back then -- they'd still be jammin' 35 years later... what a great gift of music Rush has been.
RUSH is the hall of fame. Non conformists. Unique artful sound. Longevity and the greatest fans who have had Rush all to them self's for so long. Thats legend.
Greatest rock band of all time!
"Finding My Way" and "In The Mood" are two of the best, and most underrated, Rush songs of their early career. "Working Man" and "Fly By Night" get all the glory ... but these two -- they ROCK. Simple as that.
Man I love this song. One of my fav Rush tunes.
That guitar work...so crunchy!!!
Love this, I wish somebody could produce a complete package of some old school Rush like this, to bad Rush never recorded some good versions concerts like this, man do I love Rush!!!
Wicked good. Loved them from the start when I saw them in 1974 opening for Aerosmith. Love the Marshalls!!!
Freakin' awesome! I wish I could listen to Rush early in my life. Love that crazy hard rockin' first years.
thats because they make songs for themselves, and not to please anyone else. thats what makes them so amazing. they dont abide by boundaries.
Every single band needs to go on their knees and hail the best band ever. They also need to take tips because u have the best drummer, best bassist, and and one of rocks most underrated guitarists. Either than that RUSH RULES!!!!!!!
This is one the first songs I learned on drums as a 12 year old kid! Awesome post of an awesome band!
one of the best rock'n roll albums in history for me
Great perf. Really impressive band. 1 of my favorites since 30 years. Rush rules !
Its treasures like this that make me glad TH-cam exists. Wish Rush wouldnt keep all the old stuff under lock and key :)
Thanks so much for posting this.

One of the most underrated Rush songs ever, along with Bastille Day and La Villa Strangiato.
this is one of my favorite rush songs
3 of the most talented to ever grace the rock music scene!
what a great song. the shot of alex at :53 with the marshalls behind him...pure adrenalin charged hard rock!
John Rutsy did play on this album, but Peart replaced him in the band shortly after. That is "The Professor" that you see playing. Great song and album. This video is a gem!
Awesome! I especially like Geddy's use of the pre Disco era leisure suit.
I think its safe to say that this is the best band ever hands down.
What a beautiful guitar alex is playing there. and what a sweet solo. underrated player right there.
Just the greatest rock band of all time.
Modern day rock bands, get on your knees and acknowledge the masters.
Gotta love the early RUSH!!! can't say anymore!!!
im 17 and me and my bro saw rush a few years back along with a lot of my other firends who love rush, Rush is still alive and well!
FANTASTIC energy here. WOW.
rush is the best. even in their early years. nice post
Considering the fcat that for years Geddy couldn't read music, didn't know what "keys" were and still played so intuitively and sang such absurbly great stuff it is a total marvel. Cliff had a black Rickenbacker also.
I like this track. It has a very nice Zepellin feel to it.

These boys are Iconic.
Lerxst is rockin' some platforms...ooo yeah!
talent, Canadians, and hair.
I concur. Also, John Rutsey never played as well as what you hear in this vid. I think I remember this on TV when I was 13.
Good bass and vocal job. Amazing!!!
Loving Geddy's white suit.
Thanks for posting, Bytor.
2112 is one of my favorite albums.
Freaking awesome. Man they were young!
this is my favorite video I have ever watched
DAMN. I'm sure you have been asked this 1000 times but, where in the hell did you find this?? This is classic! Thanks for posting!
I believe it is Don Kirshner's Rock Concert.
best thing thats come outta CANADA
Don't forget Canadian bacon. Oh! That movie too about America and Canada in some kind of proxy war or some shit. What was it called? Oh yes! Here it is. Canadian Bacon.
@gtijerino it's from a TV show , "Don Kirschner's Rock Concert" which used to be on in the 70's
it was filmed live in a studio in LA area
Rush needs to find its way to the Rock & Roll HOF!
Wasn't this from Don Kirshners Rock Concert show Back in the mid 70's? Saw a lot of good acts like this one. Rush is great!
Dude. Thank you for citing this video. Good job man. This needs to be in the description!
And thus the seeds of immortality were sewn. This video is a gem! I don't care what anyone says...that is a fucking great rock voice!

Canadian Rock n Roll 101...awesome

2011 Rush , Zeppelin , Kiss and others ...who is still rockin...RUSH
@lbarto88 John was canned in July of '74 after the album was released. This Don Kirshner Rock Concert performance was taped in October of that year with Neil.

My dad got me into Rush, amazing.
Wow...first time seeing or hearing this song and been a fan for many years. Really sick stuff...closest I've heard Rush come to playing a funk song (baseline)..anyone feel the same?
i love the fact that geddy lee was hammered at this concert.
Thanks for posting! RUSH is so underrated :)

I love it! I'm growing my hair out and getting one of those suits man!
It's Neil. Rutsey was the drummer on the album, but left for "health reasons." Neil toured for this album and has ever since 1974. Dunbar never played for Rush.
John left for work and family reasons, so the story goes. As far as i know it was ammicable.
its so interesting to see what an animated drummer neil was back then. lots of tricks and dramatic movements
saw them open for Uriah Heep about this time frame. Loudest GD show I've ever been to, but quite enjoyable
Fly by night was a damn good album, it would be in my top 3.
@nalcow: im pushing 19 yrs, and im a huge rush fan, even the younger generations are learning about rush through friends or guitar hero.
This is crazy amazing.
Once I was watching Rush and a guy was sitting on the edge of the 5ft stage. A huge roadie dashed on and flung him off. Turned out he'd come in a wheelchair and his mates had lifted him up there to see better. @34lespaul It is john rutsey on drums. their first album was without neil
this is just plain kick arse rock !
GREAT performance
I CAN NEVER GET ENOUGH RUSH
I think he meant the R30 DVD. I heard it has some secret footage from 30 years ago. Not sure, haven't got the DVD (yet).

Canadian talent right here BOIZZZ

Rutsey never played with that energy ;)
Beautiful
