    I love making gifts for the kitchen to give my family and friends. Things like cutting boards, and chopping blocks. Could you do a video on making a cutting board on the future? I've been woodworking for a few months now and cutting boards were my first projects that gave me a hard time when it came to finishing them.

      maybe some add-ons to it.

    • @paulwaldrop
      @paulwaldrop 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had one given to me, and it had alot of the same issues. I found the lower wheel to not be co-planer with the upper, and installed a washer to fix that. I also changed out the tires from the rubber ones to some silicon tires, put casters on the bottom (had to build the base to do this), swapped out the blade guide blocks with ceramic ones and replaced both belts with the link belts. Some other upgrades I did was to replace the tension knob with a tensioner that had a handle on it, making tensioning of blades alot easier, and to install a Kreg bandsaw fence on it. These upgrades made the saw run/cut alot better (for what it was, that is). I only got rid of it because I needed a larger re-saw height. I gave it to the guy who helped my bring my new bandsaw home, and he is still using it.

    Hey steve, can you make a vanity mirror with lights with a simple tools like circular saw

  • @toddcaywood2550
    @toddcaywood2550 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I got interested in basic construction (just shed size max) and woodworking in Q3 of 2020, and got my first set of saws and a belt sander for Christmas (likely will build a sanding table to mount it to, that would be an awesome video for you to put out :)). I have a circular saw, miter saw, power drill, impact driver (that I accidentally "inherited" from a satellite installer a few years ago... woops!), a growing assortment of bits, and other basic tools any home owner should have. The things I'm truly missing are a table saw, jigsaw, and a good assortment of clamps.
    With some creativity to get around these last few for now, are they truly "required" to get started in woodworking? Obviously safety would remain #1 importance. My wife wants me to ensure I'll actually pick up the hobby before I start buying everything ;)

    What thickness board do you use? 3/4 inch?

  • @SuperDavidBrothers
    @SuperDavidBrothers 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would actually use a Jigsaw for this project because man is it a lot easier to both use and control for resawing and it's a lot cheaper than a Bandsaw (especially a big Bandsaw which is pretty dang expensive).

  • @bullfrogpondshop3179
    @bullfrogpondshop3179 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Love your videos and projects, Steve! I( recently made a couple of your razor sharpening boxes...sure beats the ratty pair of old jeans I left lying on my dresser!)
    But I have to take exception to you recommending this as a good first project for somebody new to the bandsaw. Resawing a profile in a tall, thin board right out of the gate? As a 30 year veteran shop teacher, that's not something I'd recommend to a bandsaw newbie.

    Steve, I hate to be that safety jerk. ( I really have no place to preach due to the fact that I have one finger that is messed up from being fed to my table saw several years ago ) but since you seem to be presenting to many newcomers here, a quick mention that you had the upper guide raised higher than normal safety practices would recommend might have been a good note for these viewers.

      If you wait a minute or two before attaching what you have sprayed it will be easier to peel off. The longer you wait, the more it will turn into a post-it note type of adhesive. You can always peel them off with mineral spirits.

    Harbor freight is the IKEA of woodworking. If you need something and you don't wanna pay very much for it you can technically get it way cheaper at Harbor freight. But it won't be the same quality as if you would bought it at a regular store. They do also sell really good quality stuff there but at that point you're paying a comparable price to what you would've paid if you had gone to one of the more common big box stores...

  • @pogan1983
    @pogan1983 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Now tell us how often are you going to use the servers, I think you won't find them handy at all. They are too wide, too bulky, have a bad profile to handle them, so they are cumbersome in use, and only after a big mod can they be of any real use...

    • @SteveRamsey
      @SteveRamsey  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That would be tricky. You could use a handsaw, but that would definitely take some skill. Or just lots and lots of sanding to shape it!

    • @rafaelr5837
      @rafaelr5837 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sanding to thin it out then a jigsaw for the rest

    • @wesleysmith7675
      @wesleysmith7675 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You could also use files or rasps to shape the wood by hand.

    • @simonhopkins3867
      @simonhopkins3867 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'd be tempted to modify the design so you remove less material. Then try a carving gouge, rasps and lots of sanding. 60 grit flap wheel in a mains power drill removes lots of material.

    • @philthycox2515
      @philthycox2515 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You can also glue the face template at the beginning, cut the edge side and then keep the offcut sides, fold them back with the useful core element like a sandwich and then cut the face along the template (which is already glued) but with a flat surface riding on the table. You can also fold two servers that way, immobilize them as a one block and cut them simultaneously. Other than that - great idea!

      I ruined a beautiful piece of walnut trying this. My (wide) blade drifted so badly while cutting the thickness that the spoon was unusable. It could have been too wide a board for my crappy jigsaw, or too wide of a blade but more than likely it was pilot error.
