- The Mongols. Genghis Khan. The largest land empire the world has ever known.
This is a land home to people who really punched above their weight. But that was history, what's going on in modern Mongolia? Are the traditions still going strong?
After finishing my summer trip around China, I decided to pay a quick visit to China's greatest rival. I was not disappointed.

I've had a couple Mongolian students during my English teaching days. They were quiet and kind people. They gave me small gifts from Mongolia when they graduated my class.
Fascinating! Just like the nordic tribes who were conquerors in times gone past, they seem very peaceful and welcoming today
@@noahbrown4388 ☺️
@@noahbrown4388well we were not conquerors because we were not peaceful we were because of our hope and belief of uniting the whole world in fact there was a place called trading alley that that is so long that it is almost from the one side of asia to the other side of asia and people say a beautiful woman and bucket of gold was able to go safely in the alley with no harm like no one would do anything
@@shadowdante2971 Um ok. I'm not saying ALL people from one race or time in history. But it's hard to ignore all the raping, pillaging and plundering.
Don't worry about it. I'm sure all of our ancestors did at one point, just pointing out the juxtaposition of how people were in the past as opposed to today
@noahbrown4388 that's the problem though, before, long ago, not now. If people would come ànd live in the forefront of their minds, we wouldn't have so many problems, letting people let you relive, even if you where never there for 100s, thousands of years, does a disservice to all of us. Only day you can honestly live in is today.
I cant remember if I've told you this before but your videos are the only things that completely let me forget my problems even if only for a few minutes. Can't thank you enough.
Same. This is how I travel the world.
Straight up facts, can’t agree more my guy.
The drinks, you had in a first herder family, are fermented mare milk. It is called "Airag or Kumis in English". It is a Mongolian national beverage. It is perfect for human health and the Number one beverage of Mongolian men (even for women and children) and you have had vodka made of cow milk. It is called "Nermel arkhi" it is not strong, it is soft but capable to be a drunk.
dang; sounds ... .. sounds like... I am looking at how to make urum though
@@MarcDufresneosorusrex i dont rlly remember but i think u can make it by boiling milk for a long time? u can search up it tho cuz i forgot lol
You could get drunk drinking "kumis" too. You just have to drink a lot.. liters of it
I go to Mongolia every year, and photograph all the way to Bayan Ogli and the Altai mountains
bayan-olgii lived many muslim kazah peoples
OMG! "Welcome to Mongolia. Here's a beer!" Fucking legends!
Where's the beer?

Dude!! You are all over the WORLD!!! Love the content, and you always have great history lessons to go along with it.
Thanks for bringing back memories of my youth traveling in Mongolia. Back in the early 90's you can imagine how much more rustic it was.
"Genocide was cool back then" LMAO
This has to be one of your coolest videos to date. Mongolia seems like such an interesting, fascinating place. The people also seem very warm and welcoming. Hard to imagine that these people once ruled most of the known world back in the day. So glad you got to visit and I hope this isn't your first and only Mongolian vlog. Cheers!
As he said, When the whiskey is easier to drink that the milk, genocide is the consequence. LOL.
@@geo525252 You definitely need that whiskey when you're invading Russia in the middle of winter!
I wonder if in 800 years
people will think the same about hitler....
@@tonettalover Except Hitler just kind of targets one race
@@BatuSmoka808 Except they ain't a race, and they were communist and marxists.
Mongolians are very hospitable due to nomadic culture, low density sparsely populated, any person you come across or stop by your home Mongolians welcome them, feed them offer any help they can give as they know the visitors coming from long arduous journey, haven't met any people for long time.
Also, I think they know that one day they may be in the same situation. So they treat travelers as they'd want to be treated.
well, that used to be, but, thanks to tourism and capitalism, that's not the case anymore.
As a Mongolian, that hospitality works only if you’re a foreigner. Never in my 25 years of life, 10 years of taking a taxi, have I offered a beer in a free taxi lol but really glad you had a great time from our people!
i dont think you have ever been to true countryside , Nomads actually dont care if you are foreigner or Mongolian...
Тэд надад сайн ханддаг, би Оросоос ирсэн Монгол хүн,
that wasn’t even a taxi, just some random dude 🤣
so sad...in my whole life in Mongolia as a Mongolian I was offered free ride many times, offered a free wifi hotspot, free phone charger etc., and a warm blanket when I hopped in a taxi shivering from the rain. People are kind and caring and love to talk and get to know each other in this country. Maybe you should slightly change your view to the world and spread kindness. It will definitely return to you
@@tsomotsomik2754 In a country that really has some very harsh conditions sometimes like Mongolia, you can't afford not to offer some generosity to a stranger. Am a Kenyan, and some tribes live in the African savanna, and you can't afford not to offer something here and there be it water or a ride to some women when you are driving through the savanna, so I can relate.
Mongolia is also one of my favourite countries. I loved the people there, and the scenery was beyond words in how spectacular it is. I will definitely return in the future.
Acha que compensa morar?
My favourite part was when you got the free ride and the beer! What excellent hospitality! :D
4:12 was really funny, it got him a shiver. This is unbelieveble how propaganda can influence people so far.🤣😂
@@Fortapistone nahh bro no propaganda about Americans in Mongolia, the old man was just curious, and the shivering was just his way of making the awkward conversation more fun.

I am from Mongolia but live in Europe. I never been there so I am traveled with you in this video. Thank you so much
watching from Kenya, always been fascinated by the conquest prowess of this dude Geghis
One of the finest episodes in some time! What an interesting history lesson! Thanks Tommy!
Good to see you back and looking sharp Tommy. Great video. History of Mongolian people is fascinating and enchanting.
Mongolia is truly fascinating, what a great video
I was just thinking about this country and wondered why these vloggers never went there. And here you go. Youre a legend for this. Greetz from The Netherlands. Liked your Suriname tour also.
Thanks for the beautifull content once again. Keep showing us the world!
Always look forward to a new Sabbatical video!
Always interesting, thank you for taking us on your adventures and journeys.
My god, Tommy, not only do you provide fascinating information and insights to the many countries you’ve been to. You have an incredibly quick wit that leaves me in stitches. Thanks for this wonderful look into the places where “real life happens.” Gotta run, Gonna try myself a little horse milk🥴
Yes, you must ! The fermented horse milk is my favorite choice of drink. I grew up drinking that and miss it.
Another beautiful part of our planet to showcase! I got worried you were going on a break from vlogging after that last vid 👌
24:40 It worked! Ask anyone for a ride and if you say the promo code phrase "It's my first time in Mongolia" they automatically give you a free beer
HAHAHAHAH promo code activated
Thank you for all your awesome videos!
Outstanding lesson! They are very welcoming people. Horse milk sounds interesting. You take us places we can never, ever get to! Thank you.
When you drunk that milk, this is one of the times I said to myself, "I'm glad we are living through you." Lol
Just came back from Mongolia. Amazing country. ❤
Watching you try airag (mare’s milk) took me back to my first time trying it. You really do get used to the flavor. 😂
I lived in Mongolia for 3 years learning the language and immersing myself in the culture. Truly one of the wildest places on earth with some of the nicest people I’ve ever met!
I don't think so .. lol. Bushyboy Oz
I think airig is fermented horse milk or ‘beer’. And it looked like he also had the distilled airig or vodka. Now that was truly amazing when i tried it. So smooth!
Hey Tommy, great to see a new video after the China series. I didn't know how long you would be out after you mentioned there was a health scare. Love your content
looking forward for more Mongolia episodes !
I've watched all of your videos and this IMHO was one of your best. Hope you can give us more content, thanks buddy.
I love it when Tommy shows us how well he wakes up in the morning.. True on the road stuff. More please.

So glad your back and Mongolia is a awesome country
Mongolian people seem very welcoming. Would love to venture there one day.
Fantastic video Tommy. Only recently subscribed and I'm playing catch up with your travels. Really enjoying this buddy.
Wow this brings back memories. Mystical things happened around me on my trip there years ago. Other than more high rises it looks much the same. So many memories. Thanks.
You deserve all the kind people giving u beers Sab
Always a great video. Its funny how awkward it gets after he says he's an American. The first guy shrieked and lifted up his shoulders in shock.
It's a hilarious insight into what type of news is big in a place and/or within a generation

Magically wonderful Mongolia video.. strong contrast between U.Bator and heavenly green landscape but Mongolian people are unique blessed souls Greetings from Macedonia europe
Loved the music at the end 👍🏽🍻
If there's such a country like "one of the kind", it's definitely Mongolia. The local people are incredibly hospitable, I mean let's say you're in NYC, can you imagine a stranger picking you up and offering you a beer for free? Not gonna happen lol. Oye Tommy, me gusta mucho tu nuevo corte de pelo, te hace parecer más joven 😊 tu sí eres tan lindo 💜 siempre tienes una sonrisa en tu rostro, ¡me encanta! One more thing, I liked so much your videos you filmed in China , not least because you speak Chinese so well. Alrightey, take care of yourself and enjoy your time in Mongolia, or where ever you are right now...¡Que tengas un gran día! Espero verte pronto 💕 Hasta la próxima! Chao! 💜💕💜
Thanks Tommy I have always been fascinated by Mongolia and it's people. This is a nice insight into their everyday lives today. And a first for me seeing someone milk a horse. Brilliant stuff 👏 👏👏
Just so you know Age of Empires II (came out in 1998) is still widely popular today and and the Mongols is one of the top 5 best civilizations in the game.
Most mongol invasions were small band of bandits looting trip when the time on grassland was tough. Even today mongol region has the highest robberies. Before and after mongol empire, this place was actually victims of invasion by Chinese empire. Numerous Chinese victory stone tablets recording military conguests were discovered in mongol region.

I love how modern camera can handle the shot directed to the sun.
Nice video anyway. Thank you Tommy for the show on Mongolia.
Very "versatile" culture. They became one of the nicest people in the world in the most peaceful area on the planet. God bless!
The people giving you to go milk and food/sharing their national food as you left 😭. So sweet and proud of their country.
Cool to see you in Karakorum. Cool video, hope you will uploading more from Mongolia 🇲🇳

Nice looking country and city ! Can’t wait to see more vids you bring of Mongolia 💪🏿
Mangolia, dude, that was awesome. Keep it coming, keep doing what you're doing.
As a mongolian i approve you have very good grasp on our history and really good pronunciation of mongolian words as a westerner.
I've seen a lot of western people struggle to say a word in mongolian.
ty for showing up mongolia sabbatical. one of the first languages i want to learn is russian or chinese because of you. mongolia seems like they have really cool people.
Incredible video of a place so many will never be. Thank you for showing some of their true culture l.
Great vid! 👍 love original content.😊
Great video of my home country and people! Thank you! Just FYI, that yard in Kharkhorin is a Buddhist temple that was built way later on on the ruins of the capital Kharkhorin. Actual city of Kharkhorin was much much bigger just as displayed in a well established local museum there. Another thing to correct here is that the two humped camel or Bactrian Camel wasn't imported but rather it was domesticated here on the steppes of Mongolia. We still have the ancestors of the Bactrian camel, Khavtgai, the wild camel, that is roaming the remoteness of the Gobi today.
Thanks!
Amazing, thank you for sharing this adventure! I cant believe that man gave you a ride, a beer and wanted nothing in exchange. This might be the nicest country in the world
that was some real hospitality, a free ride, a free beer, and a new friend. long live Mongolia
Thanks Tommy ❤
you are becoming my favorite youtuber! keep it up
Glad to see you are really ok Tommy. Mongolia nice! What kind people...I hope you stay for a bit seems like there is a bit more to it than people realize. We always see those mountains and the flatlands but never see a city or what people are like in the city...interesting and thanks for sharing man. Stay safe.
Love the video!!!!
Thanks Sabbatical for another good evening :))
