Lily Rockhole, Hanns Track - Water & Rock Art in the Great Victoria Desert

Lily Rockhole is one of the many geographical features in the Great Victoria Desert (GVD) and is nestled in eastern end of the Wilkinson Range. European controversial "explorer" Frank Hann was travelling through these lands early 1900's and was in need of water. Hann's Aboriginal companion, Talbot, located a rockhole.

Talbot located the rockhole on 23 May 1903, however it's said Hann didn't name the rockhole until 2 months later when they returned to the same spot. He referred to it in his diary as "Lilly" rather than Lily. It would have been nice if Hann had named the rockhole Talbot Rockhole, after his companion Talbot, whose find may have saved their lives.
Today, it's a little easier to find Lily Rockhole. Head east from Laverton head out along White Cliffs Yamarna Road then continue along the Anne Beadell Highway; After Yeo Homestead continue till Hanns Track,then after a few more kilometers the turn to Lily Rockhole will be on your left.
Although Talbot was Hann's Aboriginal companion right up to Hann's death, Hann was known to be quite anti Aboriginal and there are newspaper reports of him killing Aboriginals and in some cases removing their heads as trophies, all without legitimate reason.
Research revealed there are those who speculate that Talbot was Hann's illegitimate son from an "encounter" with an Aboriginal woman.
Lily Rockhole is on the traditional lands of the Wangkatha People in the Great Victoria Desert, Goldfields region.
