I worked for a Yamaha dealer many years ago and I concur with your recommendation. I'm still playing a high end Yamaha Clavinova I've had for over 20 years. Never had the space and the cash at the same time to feel like I could go for an acoustic. Still feel like my Clavinova was a great investment though!
Good acoustic pianos are comparable in cost to good cars! $5K hardly gets you in the door! Expect to pay $8K and up for a good upright piano and $20K and up for a good grand!
If you are willing to wait - and I did for years - then the right piano will find you. I spent years looking in music shops. Then a year ago I saw a piano in an antique shop, tucked away in a dark corner. Lifting the lid revealed a C Bechstein. After playing a few notes I fell in love with the rich warm sound. She was in need of tuning. I knew she was the one, and her 109 year age has enriched her beauty. I have subsequently learned to tune the piano (and continue to learn!). Learning to maintain a piano is just as rewarding as learning to play, and for the inquisitive with a desire for a holistic appreciation of their instrument, I recommend one acquire these skills over time. Absolutely, I frequent a local thrift shop where people often donate pianos they no longer want. I see one maybe once a month. They are generally in decent shape, not dogs, just needing minor work and tuning. This past spring they had an Ivers and Pond upright which started out at $500 and didn't sell. I noodled around with it every time I went in the store. A beautiful instrument needing a tune and some wood polish. Although I wasn't interested in it, the owner came up to me and said $20 and its yours. It finally got bought for yes $20, by a young asian woman - I was in the store when she auditioned and bought it.
@@Hemond1 The buyer likely paid more than $100 (5 times of $20) to get it delivered or get a U-Haul and two labors to pick up. Anyway, to get a acoustic piano, especially the big ones, in house with regular tuning and maintenance is a commitment, kind of liking to have a pet.
I saved up a hundred grand to buy a house but now that the cost of housing doubled I might just buy a grand piano and live under a bridge. I think I would be happier this way.

Played for over 10 years in recording studios on Yamaha pianos, the C3 and the C5, both from the early 1990s. These pianos are simply fantastic. I also love the Yamaha U2, upright piano. It's quite high and sounds similar to a grand. The latter sells used for under USD 5000. Just my 2C.
I bought a brand new Kawai K-300 2 yrs ago. I love everything about it, except that I wish it was a Grand Piano, but that was quite a bit more expensive. I am not good enough to justify that anyway. But I like it all shiny and new inside and out.

I have a digital Kawai Kdp110 that is amazing... I also (or should I say my daughter) have an acoustic... I play the Kawai at night and early in the morning... sometimes with headphones... it works very well... I share use of the acoustic with my daughter esp for using the pedal....
Get a digital for a fraction of the price, with no tuning costs. Play that for five or more years while you save up for an acoustic. I have just upgraded from a £1,000 digital (c$1,250 USD) to a £6,000 acoustic (c$7,600 USD) but it has taken me over five years to save up for it. Good thing come to those who wait.
Thanks alot for the useful tips jazer, i still have another question though: in many forums people state, that learning good technique and playing advanced will make a grand piano a necessity. I am currently thinking about buying a nice, professional upright, since budget is not my main concern (i want to play this instrument ideally for the rest of my life, so i don't want to buy another one later, its a long-term-decision for me), but space is a main concern... so im kind of confused and unsure what to do. i liked the sound of the uprights, even more than the sound of the baby grands i tested. but being held back down the line when my skilllevel rises worries me a bit... if you could talk about this issue, i would much appretiate it, thank you.
Thanks Jazer for your tips. My recent shoping experience teaches me lessions, avoid Chinese pianos. I found a 15 year old Kawai piano online with pretty good price, when I went to the owner's home for an audition, I found hammers were not even, they did not reture to their home positions. With the serial number, I found the piano was actually made in China.
I used a hypodermic needle filled with vodka and fabric softener to the tip of the hammers with a little gentle sanding to transform the tone of a harsh piano to a warm sound.
Here is a very important limiting factor in your choice of piano - the weight of the hammers. The hammers on a lot of new pianos are way too light. It's like plucking a guitar string with a feather - you can't get an acceptable dynamic range. This should not be confused with stiff action. Play a chord on the piano as softly as you can, and then very loud. Note carefully the contrast. The dynamic range should be the same as you can get on a high quality piano, or an electric guitar. Use that as your assessment of the hammer weight.

Furthermore, there is actual weight added with heavier keys and other parts, and shifting the fulcrum (below the key) toward the performer can add to the resistance in the same way as weight does. Hi Mr.Lee, I want to buy a new upright acoustic piano for 5-10K. I'm in my early 40s and started less than years ago to play piano. I intend to buy that piano for my next 40 years so I want to make sure I have the right thing. How am I suppose to check with my limited skill? I'm an early intermediate and can't test a piano to it's maximum potential with a Chopin piece. So far, the only thing that I can test is the break (the change were copper wires comes in). I play the chromatic scale at the 3rd octave and pay attention between D and F. I also check for the escapement by playing very softly. I don't care about high level features. A pig with lipstick is still a pig. There are to many piano retailer that talks about what the piano have and not what it does because it simply can't deliver. You can have double felt and sound boxy. You can have agraffe and have an awful break. I need simple exercice, tips that I can do to test a piano capacity. Thanks

Why bright voice are avoided? Just Yamaha and Kawai are knowing for brigthness. I have b-series Yamaha, bought as new. Price was around 4000 € (4500 USD). . it was too bright and hard sounded but piano tuner changed voice smoother, now its different piano.

You haven't mentioned any of the German/ Czech pianos! Pianos which are considered the best value. high-quality and warm raound soung: Seiler, Hoffman, Petrof, Sauter and of course STEINWAY!
What’s de most natural digital piano for about €1500. I was thinking about a roland FP30x. The presentation was perfect. But i’ve seen a amateur youtube, And that sound was terrible. So now i’m lost :-). I’m a beginner, and the goal is classical music. Kind regards
I had a digital piano and my lessons were on a Yamaha grand piano. I loved the Yamaha. I now got a second hand European upright. Unfortunately my lessons are now on a cheap Yamaha upright and the sound is not that great.
This is very helpful. I had a Yamaha C7F for 16 years until I moved and downsized my home. The C7F would not fit and I had to sell it.....with tears in my eyes. Went with a digital Yamaha and while it was fine for practicing and goofing around I missed my acoustic piano. Went and looked at Yamaha again because that's what I've always had, and was shocked that the 7 /1/2' concert grand like I had is now $80,000! I had paid $16,000 and it was new at the time. Anyway, decided to go with the more mellow sounding Kawaii Gx2 or GX3.......waiting for them to reach my local dealer then I will decide between the two. I also liked the innovative design of the carbon fiber action in the Kawai. I hope mine arrives by Christmas as I can't wait to start playing again on an acoustic instrument.
Nice video!! 5 years ago I bought an acoustic piano after using a keyboard for many years, and I love it:)) it’s by the brand miki, which was a daughter company of yamaha (I don’t think they are still producing these) from 1975. btw it’s built the same way as the Yamaha u3 .I got it at a local piano store and it was completely overhauled. It has a very nice sound and is just like a new piano but we got it for „only“ 5000€. I would recommend buying a used piano for anyone who is just playing for fun and not looking for anything super professional since they are just as good as new pianos if you buy them in trustworthy shops :))
I bought a European second hand piano (made in Germany). The sound is sooo beautiful! I prefer it even over Japanese instruments. I tried several Yamaha uprights and I just don't like the sound as much as European made piano's
You speak from my heart! German brands are often ridiculously priced (true), but the way they sound... especially love Bösies (okay, that's Austrian but...). Japanese pianos are too bright for me (still, I like them more than some American ones...)
I was thinking about a kawai GL 10, my teacher said it's a good choice and I am willing to get rid of my sofa to make space for it 😅 we'll see.. I hope I manage to buy it soon 😍

I love playing 1950s rock and roll on my digital piano with songs such as great balls of fire, Johnny b. Goode, etc. However I’m not sure if a softer sounding piano would sound best for that genre. Depends how much you like piano and if its your job Even if its your job the majority of ppl wont need a grand piano If you have the money (which id alot of money) and you really like piano then go for it but if you're a beginner dont drop that much on a piano

I think for some people just starting out, yamaha p-45 series are decent in price range, feel, sound and quality. Acoustics are really nicer though. I think some people are just shocked by the 5k USD. But that's for the people who are serious about this.

Harsh/Bright versus Round/Soothing sounds are not the best explanation. You don’t want a harsh ,or too,soft a sound. On the opposite spectrums. Indicating mechanical ,or felt hammer. Quality ,or age issues. European brand pianos tend to be soothing, for classical tastes. As apposed to bright Japanese pianos, ie pop jazz etc. What ,you ,want is ,extreme control. Being able to play with the lightest touch. And, a long decay ,for hard touches, for what you are paying for. That is why ,you have the duplex scale, and large solid tapered soundboards. On the large grands…
remember to be realistic - you will need to put in a bit of work whatever method you decide on for learning to play piano I have spent months studying how to play piano and found a great website at TurboPianoSecret.com (google it if you're interested)

Hi Downover, have you tried the P125 in a store? If it feels good for your needs, I don't see why not. If you feel like it's a significant downgrade from your old piano, perhaps it's not a good idea to buy. Your answer depends on 2 things- the quality of your current old piano and what level/genre of playing you want to do on your instrument. Keyboards are more suitable for modern music.

Yes. It is 33 years old and problem starting to happen. I have been looking at them that have weighted keys. Still debating on upright or digital. Upright piano I notice different size. Does it matter what size piano you buy?
Tip 2: Avoid Yamaha & Go for Kawai or European made piano 😂 Tip 3: Go for Kawai if you can't afford EU Piano or Yamaha (if you want a harsh bright sound) but whatever you do Avoid Chinese Pianos (But what about Korean or Indonesian Samick)? 🤔

First off, take the time to test it out yourself, if you can get do that then check if you like the weight of the keys, sound, and ask if it has been restored or new. If you can't get do that disregard everything I just said and just search for reviews online from other people who bought and experienced the piano.

I fell in love with my Yamaha 1990 - $7500 grade AAA Japan after 4 years on my Roland 140R - 10 months later fingers nolonger painful

Those are usually out of the budget range of many, hence my recommendation for Yamaha and Kawaii.

I had a digital piano and my lessons were on a Yamaha grand piano. I loved the Yamaha. I now got a second hand European upright. Unfortunately my lessons are now on a cheap Yamaha upright and the sound is not that great.
How much can you knock off the initial asking price at a piano store on a say 20 to 40k USD Yamaha or Kawai? What is the dealers margin usually?
This is very helpful. I had a Yamaha C7F for 16 years until I moved and downsized my home. The C7F would not fit and I had to sell it.....with tears in my eyes. Went with a digital Yamaha and while it was fine for practicing and goofing around I missed my acoustic piano. Went and looked at Yamaha again because that's what I've always had, and was shocked that the 7 /1/2' concert grand like I had is now $80,000! I had paid $16,000 and it was new at the time. Anyway, decided to go with the more mellow sounding Kawaii Gx2 or GX3.......waiting for them to reach my local dealer then I will decide between the two. I also liked the innovative design of the carbon fiber action in the Kawai. I hope mine arrives by Christmas as I can't wait to start playing again on an acoustic instrument.

Nice video!! 5 years ago I bought an acoustic piano after using a keyboard for many years, and I love it:)) it’s by the brand miki, which was a daughter company of yamaha (I don’t think they are still producing these) from 1975. btw it’s built the same way as the Yamaha u3 .I got it at a local piano store and it was completely overhauled. It has a very nice sound and is just like a new piano but we got it for „only“ 5000€. I would recommend buying a used piano for anyone who is just playing for fun and not looking for anything super professional since they are just as good as new pianos if you buy them in trustworthy shops :))
I bought a European second hand piano (made in Germany). The sound is sooo beautiful! I prefer it even over Japanese instruments. I tried several Yamaha uprights and I just don't like the sound as much as European made piano's
You speak from my heart! German brands are often ridiculously priced (true), but the way they sound... especially love Bösies (okay, that's Austrian but...). Japanese pianos are too bright for me (still, I like them more than some American ones...)

Hi jazer, thank you for this helpful video. I noticed that you said stay away from pianos with a bright sound. But Does this depend on the type genre I want to play? I love playing 1950s rock and roll on my digital piano with songs such as great balls of fire, Johnny b. Goode, etc. However I’m not sure if a softer sounding piano would sound best for that genre. I’m planning on performing these songs in the future so I want to find a piano that sounds best. Please let me know your thoughts and thank you.

If you have the money (which id alot of money) and you really like piano then go for it but if you're a beginner dont drop that much on a piano

I think for some people just starting out, yamaha p-45 series are decent in price range, feel, sound and quality. Acoustics are really nicer though. I think some people are just shocked by the 5k USD. But that's for the people who are serious about this.

Idk why but all kawai pianos sound "bright" to me. The type of tone you'd like to play "the entertainer" piece.

1st Stick With one brand if beginner pick Yamaha a simple brand
2nd pick the one that actully looks good and fits in your house
3st sticks with a 3000 to 5 grand budget
4th buy a one that sounds good and go to a shop and feel one but make sure it looks good too

Acoustics I suggest for medium Yamaha U1 is they best acoustic piano that looks good and are good for a good budget and a ok player or buy a digital piano from yamaha

Harsh/Bright versus Round/Soothing sounds are not the best explanation.
You don’t want a harsh ,or too,soft a sound. On the opposite spectrums.
Indicating mechanical ,or felt hammer. Quality ,or age issues. European
brand pianos tend to be soothing, for classical tastes. As apposed to
bright Japanese pianos, ie pop jazz etc.
What ,you ,want is ,extreme control. Being able to play with the lightest
touch. And, a long decay ,for hard touches, for what you are paying for.
That is why ,you have the duplex scale, and large solid tapered soundboards.
On the large grands…

I'd hire a piano tuner to come with me to buy a piano. They can probably tell if it has problems within minutes.

Hi Downover, have you tried the P125 in a store? If it feels good for your needs, I don't see why not. If you feel like it's a significant downgrade from your old piano, perhaps it's not a good idea to buy. Your answer depends on 2 things- the quality of your current old piano and what level/genre of playing you want to do on your instrument. Keyboards are more suitable for modern music.

@@BubblexLp couldn't you just restored the piano? Unless you're playing a piano from the 60's then restoring a piano at that type of age would cost you a fortune. But if the piano's has a fair age like 5 or 6 and the tones the problem then, it would be less than $800.

First off, take the time to test it out yourself, if you can get do that then check if you like the weight of the keys, sound, and ask if it has been restored or new.
If you can't get do that disregard everything I just said and just search for reviews online from other people who bought and experienced the piano.
