    Thank you. I love osoto gari in self defense but it hardly ever worked during grappling. This will help to finish it during training.

    Thank you Sensei Shintaro for that in-depth explanation of osoto-gari. Body mechanics are important to understand, and you explained it very well.

    Thank you Mr. Higashi. More and more, I’m finding that I wanna start on the feet instead of the knees when it’s time to roll. Thanks to your videos.

    O Soto Gari works very well in self-defense and street fighting. 1. It’s one of the most simple techniques and easy.
    2. It’s what most people least expect.

    I learned this hopping trick from Jeff Chan, but he used it with Uchi Mata. Never knew i could do this to increase Osoto gari effectiveness, genius

    Sensei, what is the purpose of practicing 'traditional' osoto with the large step if it doesn't look like that in randori or competition? My dream is to have an osoto gari like Yasuhiro Yamashita and Ono. Could you maybe make a video of Ono's variation of Osoto?

    • @donovanhowell9831
      @donovanhowell9831 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would also like to see some variations that great modern judo players use

      The last one he shows is pretty much how shohei does osoto

    • @wikingagresor
      @wikingagresor 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The 'traditional' approach is better for self defense, and emphasis on stepping up to the uke is important when you are fighting with striking involved.

    • @dianecenteno5275
      @dianecenteno5275 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wikingagresor Agreed! The traditional approach in self defense, also allows you to apply your own strikes during the execution. 💮

    The step is proportional to how far your opponent is, judo is always harder when you are further fro your opponent. If a big step is needed you are probably to far away.

    If head control is the most important factor on the upper body side, would it be effective for me to plant my palm under my opponent's jaw and push from there? That would seem much harder to resist than any collar grip.

    Nice techniques, but Osoto Gari is hard to execute in randori since we can be countered

  • @MaxLohMusic
    @MaxLohMusic 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    99% of osoto gari tutorials or "how to fix osoto gari" on TH-cam are still teaching the traditional way. We're finally seeing a turnaround where more people are realizing there's literally 0 evidence traditional osoto gari works against a resisting opponent at all, but it's a very slow, change-resistant situation. It seems even the adaptive sport styles have some bias towards adhering to tradition.

    Is he going to stand there while you hold his knee and hop forward?

    • @holdenmuganda97
      @holdenmuganda97 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you have proper head control like Shintaro demonstrates the he won’t be able to move cause all of his weight will be on his leg.
